N/A Game No. 9 - Dec. 18, 2010 Liberty LADY FLAMES (3-5, 0-0 Big South) Durham, N.C. - McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium - 2 p.m. The Game Liberty (3-5, 0-0 Big South) will attempt to claim its fi rst road victory of the season Saturday at 2 p.m., when the Lady Flames make their fi rst-ever trip to North Carolina Central (1-8). Liberty s fi rst game in 13 days will mark just the second meeting between the Lady Flames and the Lady Eagles. Liberty defeated North Carolina Central by a 64-44 count Feb. 4, 2010 at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames have won 29 straight games against current members of the MEAC. Last Time Out Liberty trimmed an 11-point defi cit to two within the last four minutes of its game at James Madison on Dec. 5. However, the Dukes hung on for a 54-51 victory in the Commonwealth clash, despite playing without leading scorer Dawn Evans. Devon Brown made a successful 2010-11 season debut for the Lady Flames, tallying 14 points in just 17 minutes of action. A Look Ahead Liberty will play its fi nal game before Christmas Tuesday at VCU. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Verizon Wireless Arena. It will be the 32nd all-time meeting between the Lady Flames and the Rams, but this is Liberty s fi rst contest at VCU since Nov. 24, 2002. VCU owns a 22-9 lead in the head-to-head series. However, the Lady Flames have been victorious in four of the last six matchups. Lady Flames On The Air All Lady Flames basketball games may be heard LIVE on WWMC 90.9 FM The Light. His teams have averaged 24 victories per year, while becoming a regular fi xture in the NCAA Tournament. Green has accumulated a 267-88 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of.752. He ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches in winning percentage to begin the year, ahead of renowned coaching names like Rutgers Vivian Stringer, LSU s Van Chancellor and North Carolina s Sylvia Hatchell. More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament 10 times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories during nine of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the fi rst time in program history. Green has actually been to the postseason on 22 occasions as a women s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of the 22 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. In 2009-10, Liberty made another trip to the Big Dance, despite fi elding a young team which featured only one senior. The Lady Flames fi nished the year with a 27-6 record and hoisted the Big South Tournament championship trophy for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and the 2009-10 Lady Flames were certainly no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 13.9 caroms per game, leading the nation in the category. The Lady Flames have now been listed among the nation s top fi ve teams in rebounding margin for seven straight years. Liberty previously led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also ended the season ranked in the top 10 nationally for scoring defense (second, school-record 50.0 ppg), fi eld goal percentage (second,.482) and scoring margin (seventh, +17.2). A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty s career wins leader. The 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain, for many reasons. A seniorladen Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the fi rst two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, 21st (USA Today/ESPN). Green s track record shows he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest during Green s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty s fi rst win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a.914 (171-16) winning percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with one or fewer setbacks seven times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons.

The Lady Eagles have already played three Big South opponents this year, defeating Presbyterian College by a 43-38 score and dropping decisions to both Gardner-Webb (62-54) and Winthrop (62-60). Their most recent contest was a 67-61 Tuesday loss at Campbell, who will join the Big South Conference in 2011-12. Jori Nwachukwu, a 6-0 redshirt senior forward/center, has made a successful return to the court after redshirting the 2009-10 campaign. She paces the Lady Eagles in both points (14.8 ppg) and rebounds (8.8 rpg). Chasidy Williams, a 6-0 redshirt sophomore guard/forward, chips in 11.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg and a team-high 2.3 spg for North Carolina Central. Like Nwachukwu, she was redshirted last season. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 12th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to 10 Big South titles. A fi ve-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 267-88 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.752) ranked 10th all-time among NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches at the season s outset. Green is 1-0 all-time versus North Carolina Central. Joli D. Robinson owns a 209-198 record in her 15th season as North Carolina Central s head coach. Robinson was a three-time CIAA Coach of the Year and led the Lady Eagles to four NCAA Tournament appearances when her team played at the NCAA Division II level. The winningest coach in program history, Robinson is 0-1 against Liberty. Liberty-North Carolina Central Series Notes Liberty is 1-0 all-time against North Carolina Central. Saturday s contest will mark the fi rst time the two teams have squared off in Durham. Last season, the Lady Flames defeated the Lady Eagles, 64-44. The fi rst-ever matchup between the two programs was played on Feb. 4, 2010 at the Vines Center. Avery Warley led all players in both points (16) and rebounds (11), while Danika Dale chipped in a career-high 15 points for Liberty. Joanna Miller was North Carolina Central s top scorer, fi nishing with 14 points. Liberty Versus the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Liberty is 31-19 all-time versus the current MEAC membership, and the Lady Flames have won 29 consecutive games against the teams currently comprising the conference. North Carolina A&T was the last MEAC squad to beat the Lady Flames, edging Liberty, 44-43, on Feb. 15, 1996. Liberty is 3-1 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, 5-11 against Hampton, 3-3 against Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1-0 against Morgan State, 7-0 against Norfolk State, 7-3 against North Carolina A&T, 1-0 against North Carolina Central and 4-1 against South Carolina State. Last season, Liberty went 2-3 during the calendar year s fi nal month. This will be the second straight season that the Lady Flames will play only fi ve December contests, and all fi ve games will take place away from Lynchburg. Liberty is 0-1 to start out the month. Taking on the Tar Heel State Saturday s game will be Liberty s fi rst of seven scheduled contests against North Carolina-based opponents this season. The Lady Flames will also meet Big South foes Gardner-Webb (Jan. 31 and Feb. 12), High Point (Jan. 3 and Feb. 5) and UNC Asheville (Jan. 10 and March 4) twice each. After Saturday, Liberty will have played just as many games (three) within the Raleigh/ Durham metropolitan area as the Lady Flames have played at the Vines Center thus far in 2010-11. Liberty opened the season with a pair of contests at the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. Pack Your Bags Liberty s next home game is not until Jan. 17, when the Lady Flames return to the Vines Center for a Big South Conference matchup against Radford. Before then, the Lady Flames will play nine consecutive games away from home, marking the squad s longest road swing since a 10-game trip during the 1991-92 season. The lengthy road trip will include games in four different states (Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia). During the string of road contests, the Lady Flames will travel over 2,000 miles by bus. Additionally, the Liberty men s basketball team is playing nearly half of its home schedule during the Lady Flames time away from the Vines Center. The Flames have seven home games between Dec. 2 and Jan. 8. Seeking to Recapture Road Success Liberty is in search of its fi rst win away from the Vines Center this season, as the Lady Flames are 0-3 in road games and 0-2 in neutral-site contests. The Lady Flames have been a strong road team in recent years. In the last three seasons, Liberty went 43-15 in games played away from the Vines Center. Home Sweet Home Perhaps no current Liberty player enjoys home games at the Vines Center more than sophomore guard/forward Jelena Antic. She is averaging 11.1 ppg during 14 career home games, as opposed to 7.0 ppg in 17 contests away from Lynchburg. Slow Starts, Fast Finishes This is the third time in Carey Green s 12 seasons as head coach that the Lady Flames have started 3-5 or worse in their fi rst eight games of the season. The fi rst two times it happened, Liberty went on to win the Big South Conference title. In 2000-01, the Lady Flames were 2-6 at this juncture, part of a 2-9 start to the season. Liberty fi nished the year 18-12. The 2008-09 campaign also saw Liberty start 2-6 through eight games. The Lady Flames were 3-7, before winning 21 of their next 22 games and wrapping up the year at 24-9. Tough Time in Tight Contests Three of the Lady Flames fi ve defeats this season have come by a combined 11 points, and Liberty is 0-3 in games decided by fi ve points or fewer. Last season, Liberty was 2-2 in such games, with one of those wins coming against Gardner-Webb in the Big South Championship title contest, 68-66. Speed Limit 55 Liberty is 3-0 this season when scoring 55 points or more in a game.

Liberty also had a 13-day gap between its games against Auburn and Cornell last season. The Lady Flames came back from the extended break to post a 70-40 win over the Big Red. Warley Wins Her Third Avery Warley was honored as Big South Player of the Week on Dec. 7. It was her fi rst award this season and the third of her career. The redshirt junior center captured a pair of Big South Player of the Week distinctions last season. Frazier s First Award Point guard Emily Frazier was tabbed the Big South Freshman of the Week on Nov. 30, becoming the fi rst Lady Flame to earn a conference weekly honor this season. Welcome Back Only one player, senior point guard Amber Mays, graduated from the 2009-10 Liberty team. As a result, the Lady Flames return 87.5 percent of their scoring and 95.7 percent of their rebounding from a year ago. Welcome Back, Part 2 Both redshirt sophomore guard/forward Brittany Campbell and redshirt junior forward/ center Kittery Maine missed the entire 2009-10 campaign due to knee injuries. Campbell had not appeared in a game since Dec. 2, 2008 at James Madison, before checking in during the second half of the Nov. 12 game against Creighton. Meanwhile, Maine s most recent contest was March 22, 2009, Liberty s NCAA Tournament game versus Louisville, before she played against Virginia Union on Nov. 16. Welcome Back, Part 3 Redshirt sophomore guard/forward Devon Brown, the Big South Preseason Player of the Year, returned from a knee injury to make her 2010-11 season debut Dec. 5 at James Madison. She had missed the year s fi rst seven games, but made an immediate impact versus the Dukes. Brown scored 14 points in just 17 minutes of action, tying her career highs for both free throws made (8) and attempted (9). Liberty Versus Non-Conference Opposition After its 3-5 start to the 2010-11 campaign, Liberty s all-time non-conference record is now 279-302. Liberty s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty s lone non-conference setback that season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament. Lady Flames to Face Wide Variety of Non-Conference Foes Liberty is scheduled to match up with opponents from eight different conferences this season, including Big 12 (Baylor & Texas A&M), BIG EAST (St. John s), CAA (James Madison & VCU), CIAA (Virginia Union), MEAC (North Carolina Central), MVC (Creighton), Patriot (Lafayette), Southern Conference (College of Charleston) and WVIAC (Glenville State) foes. Depending on how the Terrapin Classic plays out, the Lady Flames could also face teams from the ACC (Maryland) or the Atlantic-10 (La Salle). Piling Up the Postseason Qualifiers Liberty could play as many as 12 games against teams which qualifi ed for postseason tournaments in 2009-10. The Lady Flames potential opponents this year include four NCAA Tournament qualifi ers (Baylor, James Madison, St. John s and Texas A&M), four WNIT qualifi ers (Creighton, Gardner-Webb, Maryland and VCU) and two WBI qualifi ers (Charleston Southern and College of Charleston). The Lady Flames will host Charleston Southern on Jan. 24 and Gardner-Webb on Feb. 12. Other than those two contests, the rest of Liberty s matchups with 2009-10 postseason teams will be played away from the Vines Center.

She is the longest-tenured assistant coach in program history, and has helped Liberty achieve considerable success. The Lady Flames have gone 177-56 during Stephens tenure, winning six Big South titles and making the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. International Flavor Sophomore Jelena Antic hails from Skopje, Macedonia and redshirt sophomore Tolu Omotola was born in London, England, giving Liberty international players on its roster for the 17th consecutive season. The last time the Lady Flames roster consisted solely of American-born players was the 1993-94 campaign. Every Carey Green-coached team at Liberty has featured at least one international player. Local Flavor Even though Jelena Antic was born in Macedonia, she played high school basketball at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Va. She is one of four current Lady Flames who attended high school within 70 miles of the Liberty campus, joining Kylee Beecher (Hidden Valley), Devon Brown (Waynesboro) and Brittany Campbell (Brookville). Lack of Overtime Since a 64-62 overtime setback at High Point on Jan. 20, 2007, the Lady Flames have played 119 consecutive games without needing extra time. No current Lady Flame has played an overtime contest in college. By way of comparison, the Liberty men s basketball team has played seven overtime games since the Lady Flames last overtime action. The Lady Flames most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. Liberty s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their fi rstever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty s fi rst win over a ranked opponent, as Virginia entered the game with a No. 23 national ranking. Nearing a Milestone With four more rebounds, redshirt junior center Avery Warley will become only the seventh Lady Flame ever to post more than 700 points and 600 rebounds in her career. The exclusive club includes Katie Feenstra, Megan Frazee, Moriah Frazee, Elena Kisseleva, Sharon Snodgrass and Sharon Wilkerson.

After shooting just 51.9 percent as a freshman, she boosted her percentage to 56.4 last season. So far in 2010-11, Warley is connecting on 73.9 percent of her tries from the charity stripe. Clutch Shooters During the last fi ve minutes of Liberty s four closest games this season, Emily Frazier is 5-of-6 from the foul line, while Avery Warley is 4-of-4 and Devon Brown is 2-of-2. Benefitting Both Players After the season s fi rst three games, Emily Frazier replaced Dymond Morgan as the Lady Flames starting point guard. The move has paid off statistically for both players. Frazier is scoring 7.0 ppg as a starter, as compared with 2.6 ppg as a reserve. She is shooting 50.0 percent from the fl oor and 62.5 percent from three-pointe range as a starter. Meanwhile, Morgan is averaging 7.6 ppg coming off the bench, after posting 2.7 ppg in a starting role. Her steals have also gone up in her new role, from 1.0 spg to 1.8 spg. Wanted for Theft Last season, Liberty ranked No. 14 nationally in steals per game (11.4 spg) and tied the program record with 377 steals. The Lady Flames have also been active on the defensive end during the fi rst eight games of the 2010-11 campaign, averaging 10.6 steals per contest. Rulers of the Rebounds Liberty led the nation in rebound margin last season, pulling down an average of 13.9 more boards than its opponent in each contest. The Lady Flames outrebounded 32 of their 33 foes in 2009-10, while topping the nation in the category for the third time in program history. National champion UConn ranked second at 12.7 and national runner-up Stanford fi nished third at 11.8. Liberty previously ranked as the nation s top rebounding team in both 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames have been listed among the NCAA s top fi ve squads for rebounding margin for eight consecutive seasons. A Big Uniform to Fill This will be the fi rst season since Carey Green s fi rst year at the helm, 1999-2000, that a Lady Flame has donned No. 24 on her uniform. Elena Kisseleva wore No. 24 during all four years of her career, before graduating in 2000. She is Liberty s all-time leading scorer with 2,154 points and was part of the inaugural class inducted into Liberty s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Jasmine Gardner, a 6-2 freshman forward from Memphis, Tenn., will sport No. 24 this season, as she begins her career with the Lady Flames. A Big Pair of Shoes to Fill Even though only one player is missing from last year s team, the Lady Flames lost a key component when point guard Amber Mays graduated. Mays started 64 times at point guard during her two seasons with the Lady Flames, pacing the squad in both assists and steals both years. She wrapped up her career in fi ne fashion, earning a spot on the 2010 Big South Championship all-tournament team. The two players seeing the most playing time at the point guard slot in 2010-11 are senior Dymond Morgan and freshman Emily Frazier. Morgan served as Mays backup a year ago, appearing in all 33 contests. She ranked third on the team with 49 steals and tied for third with 46 assists. Meanwhile, Frazier enrolled at Liberty for the spring 2010 semester, but is seeing her fi rst collegiate game action this season. Other options at point guard include senior Rachel McLeod and sophomore Jelena Antic. McLeod opened her Liberty career as a point guard, before shifting to the 2 position during the 2008-09 season. At 6-2, Antic is very tall for a point guard, but did play the position in high school at Liberty Christian Academy and displayed a deft passing ability during her freshman year with the Lady Flames.

During the trip, Liberty competed in the international Friendship Games tournament and won the championship in dominating fashion. The Lady Flames went 5-0, winning their games by an average of 40.2 points per contest. Liberty defeated the Israel Under-20 National Team by an 82-58 count in the title game.
