Last season s two-game series between the Warhawks and Golden Eagles was split. Southern Miss downed ULM 8-5 Feb. 22, 2011 in Hattiesburg, while ULM got the best of No. 25 Southern Miss 7-2 at Warhawk Field March 22. The Warhawks rolled to a 9-3 win over Tulane in the 2012 home-opener at Warhawk Field on Tuesday. 2,447 fans were on hand to see Joey Rapp drill two home runs, driving in a career-best five RBIs, to power the ULM offense. Jeremy Sy, Caleb Clowers and Brandon Alexander each added a pair of base hits in the winning cause. The 2011 All-Sun Belt first team first baseman, Rapp is batting an astounding.615 with three home runs, nine RBIs and six runs scored. The 6-4 senior is reaching base in.722 percent of his plate appearances. Along with Rapp, Sy and Alexander are riding fourgame hit streaks to open 2012. Sy is batting.462 with two triples and three RBIs, and Alexander is hitting at a.455 clip with a home run and four RBIs. Shelby Aulds enjoyed one of the most dominant outings of his ULM career in Tuesday s win over Tulane. The right-hander hurled 5.2 innings of shutout baseball, walking just one Green Wave hitter and striking out three men in relief of Fraser Adams. The victory was the third of Aulds Warhawk career. The Warhawks have scored one or more runs in the first inning in each game of their current three-game winning streak. ULM scored one in the opening frame of a 7-3 triumph in game one and two runs in the nightcap of a 7-2 victory Sunday at UTSA. A four-run first set of ups put the Warhawks firmly in control early in the 9-3 win over Tulane on Tuesday. Head coach Jeff Schexnaider is 12 wins from passing Brad Holland for fourth place on the ULM career list. Schexnaider has 139 victories in his sixth year at the helm of the Warhawks. Can Anything Slow Joey Rapp? Senior Joey Rapp has torn the figurative cover off the ball during the first four games of his final collegiate season. Rapp is slugging a monstrous 1.462 percent, batting.615 and reaching base.722 percent of the time. Along with the high percentages, Rapp leads the Warhawks with three home runs, nine RBIs and is tied with Caleb Clowers in runs scored (6). Rapp is also second behind Clowers drawing four walks during his first 18 plate appearances of 2012, and has collected a team-best 34 putouts while manning first base. A Sun-Filled Day At Warhawk Field Last Friday s season-opener at UTSA was postponed in the afternoon due to inclement weather in the San Antonio area. The complete opposite occurred for the 2012 home-opener at Warhawk Field, as 2,447 fans came out to witness the win over Tulane. In fact, Tuesday s attendance figure surpassed every single home game from 2011, which saw record-setting crowds attend Warhawk Field all season. Alexander Adjusting To DI Quickly Junior outfielder Brandon Alexander has risen above the learning curve swiftly in his first four games at ULM after transferring from John A. Logan College. Already notching three starts through the season s first two series, Alexander has responded with five hits in 11 at-bats (.455 average) and four of ULM s 27 runs batted in. Alexander had the distinction of being the first Warhawk to hit a home run this season, going yard at UTSA in the first ballgame of 2012. Along with drawing two walks, the 6-1 native of St. Louis, Mo. is second on the team in on-base percentage (.538). The Baltimore Orioles selected Alexander with their 29th Round pick (the 866th overall) in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft, but he ultimately attended John A. Logan instead of signing with the O s. Bullpen Cruising Along Shelby Aulds 5.2-inning appearance against Tulane was the longest for any member of ULM s bullpen. From a purely statistical standpoint, it was the most impressive. Out of the 18 batters that Aulds faced on Tuesday, only two reached base, one by way of a single and the other by way of a walk. 10 Tulane hitters grounded out against the junior right-hander, while six flew out and three struck out. Aulds, Kendall Thamm, Wil Browning and Logan Dopson all have an ERA under 3.00 and have each pitched at least one relief inning this season. TEAM SPLITS ULM... Southern Miss claimed an 8-5 win Feb. 22, 2011 in Hattiesburg before ULM upended the No. 25 Golden Eagles 7-2 March. 22, 2011 at Warhawk Field. Shake Against Southern Miss Head coach Jeff Schexnaider is 3-6 all-time against Southern Miss, including the two-game series split last season. Coach Shake s squads have faced the Golden Eagles on three separate occasions when they have been ranked among the nation s top 30 teams, posting a 1-2 record. Jeremy Sy enjoyed a three RBI evening when the Warhawks defeated No. 25 Southern Miss 7-2 last March at Warhawk Field. The victory was the last time ULM faced and the last time ULM defeated a Top 25 team. Wil Browning allowed two runs in six innings in his first career start before an injury forced him to leave the game and miss the remainder of the season. The Warhawks are a combined 83-69 in games played in the friendly confines of their home stadium during the Schexnaider era. The team has won 10 or more games at Warhawk Field in each of the last five years, including 19-win outputs in the 2007 and 2009 seasons. The Pros Are Already Watching Three ULM players have previously been chosen in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. Newcomers Brandon Alexander (29th Round, 2009-Baltimore Orioles) and Alex Hermeling (43rd Round, 2011-Los Angeles Dodgers), and 2011 All-Sun Belt first teamer Joey Rapp (41st Round, 2009-Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; 28th Round, 2010-Washington Nationals) were drafted by Major League Baseball clubs but elected not to sign. Broadcast Information Warhawk games this season will regularly be broadcast live on 540 AM in Northeast Louisiana and worldwide on ulmwarhawks.com. Bruce Hanks returns for his eighth season as the Voice of the Warhawks, with ESPN 97.7 FM s Nick White calling select games. Warhawks All*Access returns for its fourth year and fans will be able to watch all 30 of ULM s home games and select road games live on ulmwarhawks.com. Keeping The Local Flavor Head coach Jeff Schexnaider hasn t ventured far to find a lot of the talent on the Warhawk roster. Nine players on the 33-man roster are from the Monroe- West Monroe area. Warhawks to Watch >>>> Shake Climbing The Ladder ULM head coach Jeff Schexnaider passed George Luffey (1955-65) for fifth place on the all-time ULM wins list at Middle Tennessee last season. The sixthyear skipper of the Warhawks and 2008 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year currently has 139 career victories. Lou St. Amant has the most career coaching victories with 414, while Smoke Laval has the highest winning percentage at.603 (241-159). Shake needs 12 more victories to pass Brad Holland for fourth on the all-time Warhawk wins list. ULM All-Time Coaching Wins 1. Lou St. Amant (1976-93) 414 2. Smoke Laval (1994-00) 241 3. The Warhawks hold a 488-275-1 (.639) all-time record at their current home. ULM has posted at least 15 home victories at Warhawk Field on 22 different occasions, winning over 20 games in nine separate seasons. The Warhawks have 16 players on the 33-man roster that spent time playing at a junior college. Pitcher Andrew Richardson transferred from four-year New Orleans. New Bats Impacting Offense With the introduction of a new metal bat design just prior to the 2011 baseball season, many predicted that offensive totals in college baseball would be affected. Last season, the wood-like bats made their impact on the ULM offense. Schexnaider, the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, guided the Warhawks to a Sun Belt regular season conference championship in just his second season. He followed that success by leading the Warhawks to the 2009 Sun Belt Tournament Championship Game. ULM s march to the title game featured an elimination game against third-seed and host Troy and two elimination games against regular season cochampion Western Kentucky. Those two accomplishments are elevated by the fact that the Sun Belt consistently ranks among the top seven conferences in the NCAA based on RPI. Schexnaider has amassed a 139-148 record in his five plus seasons on the Bayou. During his five seasons as ULM s skipper, the Warhawks have posted the three highest home run totals in school history. In fact, ULM combined for more home runs in 2008 and 2009 (178) than it did in the four seasons (2003-06 - 153 home runs) before Schexnaider took over the club. The Warhawks put together their most successful backto-back seasons since the 2000 and 2001 campaigns with a combined 66 victories in 2008 and 2009. Over the past three seasons the Warhawks have knocked off four ranked teams - all on the road - including a victory over No. 5 Arkansas in 2009. ULM became the first team to defeat Ole Miss on opening day since 1981 when it defeated the No. 17 Rebels 6-5 to open the 2010 season. ULM defeated a pair of teams that advanced to the 2009 College World Series - Arkansas and Southern Miss - and came within two extra-inning losses of sweeping their series against both schools. The offensive and defensive transformation under Schexnaider has been remarkable to say the least. ULM has posted the top two team batting averages, the top two hits totals, two of the top three runs scored totals, two of the top three doubles totals, the top two RBI totals, two of the top four fielding percentage totals and the top two double plays turned totals in school history. Under his guidance Ben Soignier became one of the best players in ULM history and one of the best players in the NCAA. Soignier, who is ULM s only three-time All-American, holds the ULM career records for at-bats, hits, doubles and total bases, while ranking second in runs scored, third in home runs, third in RBIs, fourth in stolen bases and 10th in saves. ULM has had a player earn All-America honors in each of the last three seasons under Schexnaider s guidance. Judd Edwards joined the list of elite players in Warhawk history in 2010 when Ping!Baseball tabbed him to their Freshman All- America squad. Two Warhawks have been selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player s Draft in three of Schexnaider s four seasons as head coach. The 2009 Warhawks featured a trio of All-Sun Belt selections and Boomer Blanchard was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year. Blanchard tallied the second most hits in a single-season in ULM history in addition to scoring the third most runs and accumulating the seventh most total bases. ULM finished 18th in the country in double plays turned (64), 27th in runs scored (485), 29th in home runs (85), 33rd in slugging percentage (.519), 34th in hits (685) and 38th in batting average (.325). In 2008, the Schexnaider led Warhawks set school records in hits (697), doubles (139), home runs (93), RBIs (465), total bases (1,141) and double plays turned (76). Shake Year-by-Year Overall Pct.
