62 PBeM Champions Play-by-e-mail tournaments are the answer to many players most common complaints lack of time and inability to find skilled opposition. BPA does not run PBeM tournaments; rather, we provide support for hobbyists willing to host events. E-mail tournaments are counted the same as face-to-face action in BPA s prestigious Caesar competition, with Laurels based solely on size of the field and the average face-to-face playing time. Entry in these tournaments is free to current BPA members. If you are not already a member, an associate membership costs only $10 to cover the costs of this program. (Players have no obligation to keep their memberships current once the tournament begins.) For information about running a PBeM tournament, contact the BPA PBeM coordinator Hank Burkhalter at usschevalier@ abovethefields.com or check out his webpage at www.abovethefields.com/top_pbem. 64 EuroQuest V 25 Peter Putnam MD 19 Alex Bove PA 12 Peter Eirich MD 41 J. J. Jaskiewicz MD EuroQuest again grew in size, with nearly 250 attending over the four-day weekend on Nov. 9-12 at the Days Hotel in Timonium, Md. There were 12 tournaments vying for attention with Open Gaming opportunities. The latter was again enhanced by Tom McCorry s gracious demonstration of the newest releases from Essen and several vendors with new products. Imperial was Euro- Quest s Hot New Game for 2007. Euro Quest provides a competitive forum for the play of popular European style boardgames in a focused, in-depth format not available elsewhere. Rob Kircher, RI Harold L. Siegelman Award Winner All tournaments are run to provide multiple opportunities to compete in the same game, with a minimum of three preliminary heats preceding the elimination rounds. The Wild Card is a unique, free-form event that includes up to 15 titles. BPA plaques are awarded for each event and best overall individual performance, providing plenty of chances to gain Laurels and improve standings for BPA s annual Caesar competition. Congratulations to Rob Kircher of Rhode Island who defeated a pair of Pennsylvanians, Alex Bove and Mike Kaltman, by a single point to win the Harold L Siegelman Award at Quest V. Everyone who has registered for EuroQuest is automatically eligible to compete for this award. Points are earned in two ways: winning different games and finishing well in particular events. Arthur Field of South Carolina won the award from 2003-2006. 24 44 Lyman Moquin DC Sam Atabaki CA
EuroQuest V 65 The Harold L Siegelman Award Trophy is awarded to the top overall individual performer based on results in all events spanning the entire convention. The trophy is named in honor of Harold Siegelman, who was one of the most active and competitive gamers in the Games Club of Maryland until his untimely passing in March 2003. Much of the format and prize structure for EuroQuest is based on early input from Harold. In addition, to the tournaments, EuroQuest provides a game library and space set aside for Open Gaming. Open Gaming space is available for about 82 hours (maybe a little less if you require sleep). It is in the same main gaming hall as the tournaments, so everyone is part of the same convention experience. It s possible to do some Open Gaming in between tournaments or play some tournament games in between Open Gaming. Game demonstrations are also scheduled in the Open Gaming area. This includes teaching sessions for tournament games and new games. If you would like to learn a tournament game (or a game offered in the Wild Card tournament) and there is no demo scheduled, let the Euro- Quest organizers know (sbuckwalter@comcast.net) and they ll try to find someone to teach it. EuroQuest VI will be Nov. 6-9 at the Days Hotel in Timonium, Md. The Wild Card event will return, as well as up to 11 different main event tournaments, including Caylus, Power Grid, Princes of Florence, Puerto Rico, Ra, St. Petersburg, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride Combo, Thurn und Taxis, and one other as yet-to-be identified game, plus a Hot New Game to be announced at the 2008 World Boardgaming Championships in Lancaster, Pa.
