1. Pressure These two body movements in varying degrees of combinations cause an effect on our board in 4 different ways Board Performance Concept Tip ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------> Tail Toe - Heel. Your weight shifts over your heels or toes in varying degrees to create a gap under your heelside edge or toeside edge. This image shows the pressure shifting to the toeside edge. Up/Down which can be accomplished by moving our body mass up and down, using terrain features, or popping off our equipment. 2. Tilt Boards can be tilted to any degree, or untilted as it relates to the snow surface. We can accomplish this by use of terrain (being on an incline), inclining into a hill, or creating angles with our body. Here the board is tilted on the left through creating angles in the ankles, knees and hips and on the right through leaning into the turn 3. Pivot Our Board can be pivoted over any spot on the board tip, center, tail, or anywhere between all by moving our weight and creating this pivot with a rotary movement around a vertical axis. 3. Twist Here the lower leg is rotated to create a rotation of the ski. Moving one foot up (flex foot so toes point up), and one foot down (extend foot so toes point down), we can twist the board along the length from tip to tail. When we perform a task (using the 4 skills from the Board Performance Concept), we make movements (or a sequence of movements) with 4 considerations DIRT Model: Duration How long does the movement last? Intensity How much (say on a scale from 1-10 where 1 is the least I can perform it, and 10 is the most) of the movement do I make? Rate How frequently do I perform the movement (10 times per minute 71 times per minute ) Timing Where does this fit in with the sequence (before this I do X, after this I do Z so this must be step Y)? Using DIRT with our 4 board performances, we can either be In Balance or Out of Balance. If our skills are out of balance, and one is largely more predominant than the rest, our body is quite likely out of balance in which case we typically fall! If the skills are not matched to the steepness of the terrain and the speed we are traveling, we will also be out of balance! TEACHING We can take in information (as it pertains to riding) in 3 different ways most people have one strong input preference, but do intake information through all 3 mediums in varying degrees. So when presenting information, Show it to them, Say it to them, and get them to do/feel it! VAK Model: Show It to Them! Visual Say It to Them! Auditory Get Them to Do/Feel It! Each category below has examples that are common for varying age groups, but our students could be anywhere on the spectrum, and change any day. Teaching Progression Snowboarding Skills Handout Progression to get our students to making connected turns on green terrain: Things I have noted over the years that when we rush our students through the foundational skills stages (i.e. beginner stages), their growth and ability to progress through the intermediate and advanced phases is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced as compared to others. When we spend more time on the fundamental movements and build a good foundation (i.e. getting to connecting turns on green terrain), they accelerate though the Intermediate and Advanced zones SIGNIFICANTLY quicker as compared to others. Find ways to make being on lower terrain and repeating the same skill sets (i.e. balance, rotary, edging, pressure) FUN and DIFFERENT. The more ways we can work on this, the better the student is. Remember, success is not defined by where we make it on the mountain, but rather what we accomplished as it pertains to the CAP model! 1. Boots a. Learn about boots b. Learn how to put on boots c. Play in boots (run in straight lines, turn around posts, etc.) d. Develop snowboard stance e. Introduce the movements in boots that we need to achieve Tilt, Twist, Pressure, and Pivot 2. Boards a. Learn about snowboards, the bindings, leashes b. Learn how to put lead foot in c. Re-perform all movements that we did in just our boots (1c, 1d, 1e) 3. Skating a. Push on both Heel and Toe side b. Turn in both directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise) 4. Gliding a. Learn how to place your back foot b. Skate Skate Glide 5. Board Performance Concepts a. Perform all movements to achieve Tilt, Twist, Pressure, Pivot on the flats with both feet in. b. Play with different movements c. Teach how to get up the hill: Side Step with 1 foot out, Frog Hop with both feet in 6. Straight Runs a. 7. Deviations out of the fall line a. On the same terrain as straight runs, have them twist their boards towards heel or toe side b. Have them go the other way too! c. Have them make these deviations sooner and sooner, until they can come to a stop in each direction without using the flat runout 8. Lifts a. If they can i. Turn in both directions to a stop, and ii. Follow directions, and iii. Shuffle enough to navigate a maze b. Teach them how to get on a lift and ride a lift safely c. Head up either a surface lift or a beginner terrain lift i. CAUTION REASSESS THEIR AFFECTIVE BEHAVIOR AS MOVING TO HIGHER TERRAIN IS TERRIFYING FOR A LOT OF FOLKS 9. Heelside Sideslip to Floating Leaf a. On steeper terrain where less likelihood of catching an edge, begin with a sideslip straight down the fall line on the heelside b. Once moving straight down the hill, shift weight to one foot or twist the board until they start moving in that direction c. Once moving in a lateral direction, shift weight back to the other foot or twist the board opposite from before and look in the other direction until you start moving that way d. Repeat steps 10b and 10c 10. Toeside Sideslip to Traverses to a stop a. On steeper terrain where less likelihood of catching an edge, begin with a sideslip straight down the fall line on the toeside b. Once moving straight down the hill, Traverse across the hill riding toe side, with a slight turn uphill at end to a stop c. Perform in both directions 11. Heelside Sideslip to Traverses to a stop a. Conduct the same movements in #10 but on heelside 12. Garlands a. 14. Bring garlands into the fall line more than across, and make the last one into a C-turn to a stop, in each direction! a.
