WEST PRESIDENT S AFRICA MESSAGE HUNTING WITH SAFARIS CHELET BY BOB KEAGY Hello SFBA Friends and Family, About 75 folks attended the recent Wild Game Feed and Awards Banquet. A good time was had by one and all! Chef A.J. again impressed us with his culinary skills. Larry Lundberg was the Hunter of the Year. Cam Greig was the Member of the Year and Fran Papapietro was awarded the Lioness of the Year. See page 10 for more information and photos of this great event! Your Board has decided to make the Sunday after Memorial Day to be the event date going forward for this great family event. Get your calendar out and circle May 31, 2015. Invite your friends! WEST HUNT AFRICA IN SPAIN HUNTING WITH LISA WITH & TOM SAFARIS MATTUSCH CHELET BY BY TOM BOB MATTUSCH KEAGY This story starts like a lot of my other hunting stories. I joined Safari Club International and the local San Francisco Bay Area Chapter. We all know about fundraisers the various nonprofits put on. I have been utilizing that medium to vary my hunting experiences and stretch my hunting dollars. That s a long way to say I bought a hunt to Spain at the Greater Bay Area Fundraiser last year with Salvador Chias, just got around to taking the hunt three weeks ago with my wife Lisa. We started out just below the border of France, tried a boar hunt with dogs, their method. We were put on a spot and told to stay there; the dogs would run the boars by us. No boars were harmed in the telling of this part of the story! We heard the dogs, but nothing approached us close enough for us to see, granted it was heavy brush and a different way of hunting. Then we ate and drank our way through the Cataluña area. Wow, the Catalonians like to use the letter X in a lot of their words! We travelled 3 hours south of Barcelona, stayed in a 700 year old village called Bel. At one point, Bel was a village of 400 people with only a spring. Now it has a population of 4. A father and daughter run the Taverna. There is a German who is restoring some of the crumbling units and the guide, who also tends the sheep and cows. Very authentic housing, rock walls were about a foot plus thick and huge Dutch type doors. When asked why the doors were like that, we learned that when the village was built 700+ years ago, the animals lived in the house downstairs, the people lived upstairs. We hunted on top of mountains bordering the Mediterranean Sea about 3,300 elevation. We saw a number of beceite ibex and feral goats. I was using a Mauser Model 66 in.243 with a set trigger. Salvador is fairly weak with his English, and I was quite weak with my Spanish, but the Spanish spoken in the area is Catalonian dialect. That made things even more interesting. Although my mind told me the set trigger would be no big deal, my body dictated otherwise. The first beceite ibex we decided to shoot was a hunters dream. Not a far shot and close to the road, the ibex had no idea we were in the area. I leveled the rifle, my brain said put your finger ever so gently on the trigger and BAM! Racked in another shell telling myself to really be careful this time. Swing into position, animal mostly in scope, I was getting ready to rest my finger ever so lightly on the trigger and BAM! Now the animal is starting to stand and there is not one but 4 animals! They looked up the hill at us all standing there, I racked in another shell, knowing I could barely touch the trigger or that cursed hair trigger was going to go off. BAM! Failure number three with 4 animals now moving healthily away from me. Jacked in the last shell, rested, waited for the animal to show, it turned sideways to me at double the distance, I was getting carefully into position and BAM! The four Ibex were now in high gear saying something is not right about that resting place. The guide with me spoke absolutely zero English, there was discussion between him and Salvador. I kept trying to tell them it was my fault and I knew what I was doing wrong, but this was one of those removable scopes, so we left to get out of the area to try a target shot. A liter water bottle was set out at 175 yards back at Bel, I kept my finger 19

Another evening in the tavern at Bel, wine from the porro, coffee, no English, however still incredible to be so far away in such a unique setting. It was always a sight to see the pork leg hanging on the wall with a little cup to catch fluid dripping. The wind started to blow, the temp was dropping. My Pro Trek watch indicated a 100 point drop in barometric pressure. We woke up to 30-50 kt winds buffeting the village and vehicle. Breakfast was not all that joyous after missing a gimme shot the day before under lovely conditions. The barometer was still dropping. Animals were scarce. The guide saw an animal I never did see, but it was great to put in a nice strenuous hike over tough ground and rocks. In a different area, the guide got excited and he and Salvador were having a heated discussion that involved the word mille which I did recognize. Salvador was hesitant, the guide started up a hillside, I struggled to keep up. As I put a stalk up a hillside, I couldn t believe the thorns and stickers I had to bust through. I finally saw the animal he had spotted across a valley. Cautiously, I relaxed, set up, aimed, controlled my errant finger and touched off the shot. I really couldn t tell from that distance if the animal ran away or not. I reloaded and scanned the thick brush for something running and stayed on the point while the guide crossed the valley to go look. He found it, perfect shot. Salvador must have had a different angle or heard more than we heard, as he said to Lisa, Kaput! An hour or two after the successful hunt, (I have mentioned The one that got away ) it started snowing! Remember the part about the old buildings we were staying in? Pretty drafty. Lisa & I used seven thick wool blankets to stay warm at night. Lisa and I think the discussion was because the animal was a very nice one and the mille was part of the 1,500 euro government surcharge 20

The VAT was mentioned in the donation and that did sting, based on the $9995 valuation at 21%, plus 21% of the value of the trophy fees, plus 21% of the upgrade fees. $10,622 in fees. After the hunt, we traveled down to Peniscola, on the Mediterranean Sea, a commercial fishing port and also the castle where El Cid was filmed with Sophia Loren and Charlton Heston in 1961. By the way, that town is pronounced similar to Chez Panisse in Berkeley - Pa-nees`-cu-la) From start to finish, Salvador took us to many small and unique spots to eat with locals and see the real side of Spain. Lisa and I wound up our Spain trip in Barcelona for a few days enjoying the food, wine, shopping for Lisa and seeing politics (riot police readying for demonstrations) in action. The tour included La Boqueria, the Olympic Stadium, the passenger and commercial freight harbor. All in all, a great trip, caveat the fees. MISSION STATEMENT FOR SAN FRANCISCO SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL To promote good fellowship among those who love the outdoors and the sport of hunting, shooting and fishing. To promote conservation of the wildlife of the world as a renewable resource in which hunting is one management tool among many. To help conservation efforts by supporting worthwhile projects, both verbally and financially, when possible. To educate our youth in the safe and proper use of firearms and to interest and teach them in conservation and preservation of the forests and animals, which are our national heritage.
