After playing in the Los Angeles Sports Arena since 1959, the Trojans move to the 10,258-seat Galen Center filled about 60 percent of the seats for the first men s game, although the student section was jammed with fans wearing white T-shirts reading Trojans 12 We Remember on the front and Ryan Francis number and nickname Franchise on the back. Southern California freshman Taj Gibson missed a jumper down low in the closing seconds of regulation. South Carolina got the rebound and Brandis Raley- Ross drove to the basket, tossing up a one-handed layup that missed as time expired. The Gamecocks (2-1) got 17 points from Raley- Ross, including a dunk that forced overtime. Archie, who had just seven points on 3-of-10 shooting in the first three games, also pulled down 10 rebounds, becoming the first Gamecock freshman to have a double-double since 2003. Archie, who hit eight of nine field goals, is the first South Carolina freshman to score 20 points since 2001. LU, which hit 31% of its 3-pointers coming into the game, nailed 13 of 27 treys to try to give coach Scott Sanderson his 200th victory against his alma mater. Tre' Kelley scored 16 points and became the 39th player in school history to score 1,000 points. True freshman Brandis Raley-Ross tied his career high with 17 points for the Gamecocks (3-1). Lipscomb was led by Trey Williams, who hit seven of 13 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points. Brian Fisk added 16 points. With the score tied at 55, the Gamecocks went on a 9-0 run behind Wallace, who hit his second 3-pointer and a pair of foul shots, to go up 64-55 with 2:12 left on Kelley s two free throws. USC scored the final nine points of the first half to rally from 14 points down to pull to 33-29 at halftime. A couple of baskets by The Citadel cut the deficit to 56-49 with 6:32 left, but the Bulldogs wouldn t get any closer. The Gamecocks shot 56 percent (28-of-50) for the field and made nine of their 20 3-pointers, compared to 37.7 percent (23-of-61) shooting from the field for The Citadel. South Carolina struggled from the outside, making only one of 13 attempts from behind the arc. Tre Kelley, the Gamecocks top scorer coming in, led the way with 15 points. But Kelley was off target as well, missing 11 of his 18 shots. The Tigers pulled away at the end of the first half after K.C. Rivers hit a jumper and two 3-pointers for a 31-22 lead. It was Clemson s third-straight victory in the series. Mays finished a three-point play with 8:57 left that extended the lead to 53-38. Three minutes or so later, Mays completed another three-point play as the Tigers went up 62-46. Mays also had seven rebounds, helping Clemson to a dominating 45-30 edge on the boards. The South Carolina senior surpassed his career performance of 20 points, set against Lipscomb earlier this season. He also matched his previous high of seven blocks in the first half, several times swatting back the inside attempts of Cougars forward Jermaine Johnson. Wallace, at 6-foot-9, even knocked down a 3-pointer in a first-half run by the Gamecocks (5-2) that turned a tight game into a blowout. Coming in, this one was about Cremins, the whitehaired wonder lured down South from the Bronx by the late Frank McGuire nearly four decades ago to help build a Southern basketball power. He got a pleasant reception from the - just about all fans heeding Odom s call not to boo their former hero for jilting the Gamecocks 13 years ago. But Mario Chalmers scored 19 points and Darrell Arthur added 17 to help No. 9 Kansas win its seventh straight with a 70-54 victory over USC. Chalmers had 13 of his points in the first half when the Jayhawks opened a 14-point lead. The Jayhawks disrupted Kelley throughout, holding him to 10 points, nearly 7 fewer than his average, on 3 of 16 shooting. The effort helped Kansas escape with the win, something No. 1 UCLA, No. 5 Duke, No. 7 Arizona and No. 8 Alabama all couldn t do on Saturday. Georgia, which fell to three Top 25 teams in its fourgame losing streak, bounced back in its first SEC home game. UGA took a 41-28 advantage in rebounds and held the Gamecocks to 35.1 percent shooting. Georgia s Mike Mercer scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. The Bulldogs also had 15 points from Takais Brown and 12 points with eight rebounds from point guard Sundiata Gaines. Carolina was led by Dwayne Day s 14 points on 5- for-15 shooting. Dominique Archie added 10 points. Georgia, which leads the SEC with its 41.7 percent 3-point shooting, was 6-for-9 outside the 3-point circle in the first half and 10-for-25 for the game. Carolina has lost three straight, including two to top-10 teams. Last Sunday, the Gamecocks were beaten 70-54 by No. 6 Kansas. Kelley had 24 points and was the only Gamecock in double figures. With the win, the Gators put away their biggest nemesis from their 2006 national championship season. USC swept both regular-season meetings a season ago, then took Florida to the buzzer before losing the SEC tournament final, 49-47. But this one was the most lopsided loss in coach Dave Odom s six seasons at South Carolina. When the Gamecocks chose to pack the middle to contain Noah and Al Horford, Humphrey made them pay from the outside - almost all the shots without a defender in his face. Crawford had 17 points in the first half to help the Wildcats (15-3, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) open a double-digit lead. Randolph Morris added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky, which has not lost since falling at North Carolina on Dec. 2. It was the worst home loss for South Carolina (10-6, 0-3) since a 64-11 defeat by Wake Forest in 1915. Crawford was 3-for-3 from 3-point range over the first 6 minutes. When SC tightened up its defense, Crawford easily found his points closer to the basket. He had three field goals and Morris converted a layup during a 3-minute sequence to put UK ahead 30-19. When South Carolina cut the lead to 30-25 - the closest it would come the rest of the way - the Wildcats finished the half on a 7-2 run, including two free throws by Crawford. Tre' Kelley led South Carolina with 18 points while Dominique Archie added 12 and Evaldas Baniulis had 10. Brandon Wallace had a career-high 15 rebounds. Tennessee led most of the game, but the Gamecocks (10-7, 0-4) made several runs in hopes of ending their losing streak which they extended to five games. South Carolina held off the taller, stronger Razorbacks thanks to Kelley and the timely inside bucket by Baniulis. With the game tied at 56, Bryce Sheldon missed a 3- pointer and teammate Brandon Wallace tipped the ball off the backboard. There was Baniulis, all by himself, for the simple shot that gave South Carolina the lead for good with 2:11 to play. After Gary Ervin missed a 3-pointer for the Razorbacks, Kelley hit a 14-foot jumper to put the Gamecocks up 60-56. Arkansas could get no closer. The six SEC Western Division teams winless in 16 games away from home this season. Darian Townes led the UA with 17 points. For a while, it looked like Townes would bring UA its first road victory.
