State with a 55-52 opening night victory. The defeat spoiled the coaching debut of SCSU's Jamal Brown, who went to the NCAAs with them as a player and an assistant. Brandon Wallace had 14 points and nine rebounds for South Carolina while Day finished with 12 points, 10 of them in the second half. The Gamecocks trailed 44-38 with 9:15 to go after Marcus McCants third 3-pointer. But Kelley and Dwayne Day brought USC back. Day had four baskets, two of them off sharp passes from Kelley, during a 14-3 run that put the Gamecocks ahead, 52-47. SCSU came back one last time, tying the game at 52 on Thomas Bookman s 3 from the right corner with 1:26 to go. Kelley drove the lane on USC s next possession and got fouled, making the first of his two free throws. Travis Jones, SCSU s top scorer with 14 points, had two chances in the last minute. However, he was called for a jump ball turnover as he bobbled the ball while going up for a shot. Then after Gamecock freshman Brandis Raley-Ross added two foul shots, Jones long 3 in the final seconds bounced away. USC opened just 2 of 12 from the field over the first six minutes. Then after hitting five of seven shots to take a 15-8 lead, SCSU rallied back with some long outside shots. Marcus McCants had two 3-pointers and Travis Jones another long-range basket as the Bulldogs tied things at 28. But Wallace finished a three-on-one break with a rousing dunk in the final seconds to put USC up 30-28 at halftime. South Carolina's Brandis Raley-Ross led the Gamecocks with 14 points off the bench, and Bryce Sheldon scored 12 points. Tre' Kelley scored 10 points with 4 assists after playing just seven minutes in the first half after picking up three fouls early. Raley-Ross converted a layup to give South Carolina a 16-15 lead with 7:02 left in the first half, but Irvine went on a 15-3 run to lead 30-19 at halftime. The Anteaters got their largest lead of the night when Marcus McIntosh hit a three-pointer to put UCI up 41-21 with about 15 minutes left in the second half. South Carolina closed to within 10 points several times late in the game, but the Anteaters were 9 of 11 on free throws in the final 1:43 to maintain their double-digit lead. After playing in the Los Angeles Sports Arena since 1959, the Trojans move to the 10,258-seat Galen Center filled about 60 percent of the seats for the first men s game, although the student section was jammed with fans wearing white T-shirts reading Trojans 12 We Remember on the front and Ryan Francis number and nickname Franchise on the back. Southern California freshman Taj Gibson missed a jumper down low in the closing seconds of regulation. South Carolina got the rebound and Brandis Raley- Ross drove to the basket, tossing up a one-handed layup that missed as time expired. The Gamecocks (2-1) got 17 points from Raley- Ross, including a dunk that forced overtime. Gibson led four Southern California players in double figures with 16 before fouling out of his college debut. Nick Young added 15, freshman Daniel Hackett had 13 and Lodrick Stewart 11. Carolina dominated the five-minute overtime, taking a 72-65 lead on a 3-pointer and driving layin by Kelley. Stewart s 3-pointer cut Southern California s deficit to 74-70 with 1:20 left, but the Trojans were forced to foul and South Carolina hit its free throws down the stretch. The Trojans held themselves together after spending halftime on the court for the tribute to Francis, while the Gamecocks retreated to their locker room. Trailing 34-31, South Carolina scored four in a row to open the second half. Southern California went on an 11-5 run to regain a 45-40 lead. The game went back and forth the rest of the way, with neither team leading by more than five points. Southern California s only other meeting with South Carolina also went to overtime, with the Gamecocks winning that one in Columbia, S.C., on Dec. 22, 1977. 4 South Carolina 75 Lipscomb 68 Nov. 19, 2006 (12,626) Dominique Archie and Brandon Wallace each scored a career-high 20 points as USC rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit to beat Lipscomb 75-68. Archie, who had just seven points on 3-of-10 shooting in the first three games, also pulled down 10 rebounds, becoming the first Gamecock freshman to have a double-double since 2003. Archie, who hit eight of nine field goals, is the first South Carolina freshman to score 20 points since 2001. LU, which hit 31% of its 3-pointers coming into the game, nailed 13 of 27 treys to try to give coach Scott Sanderson his 200th victory against his alma mater. Tre' Kelley scored 16 points and became the 39th player in school history to score 1,000 points. True freshman Brandis Raley-Ross tied his career high with 17 points for the Gamecocks (3-1). Lipscomb was led by Trey Williams, who hit seven of 13 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points. Brian Fisk added 16 points. With the score tied at 55, the Gamecocks went on a 9-0 run behind Wallace, who hit his second 3-pointer and a pair of foul shots, to go up 64-55 with 2:12 left on Kelley s two free throws. Lipscomb never got closer than five after that as USC hit nine of 10 foul shots down the stretch. USC scored the final nine points of the first half to rally from 14 points down to pull to 33-29 at halftime. LU hit seven of 15 3-pointers, including three in the first four minutes to bolt to an 11-2 lead that the Bisons stretched to 28-14 on Eddie Ards two foul shots with 6:41 left. But USC rallied. Archie's follow with 1:42 - USC's first second-chance points of the game - started a late run that included four foul shots and a 3-pointer by Raley-Ross. The Gamecocks had trouble shaking the Bulldogs, who trailed 47-43 with just under 13 minutes to go. But South Carolina went on a 9-2 run over the next 3 1/2 minutes to take an 11-point lead. A couple of baskets by The Citadel cut the deficit to 56-49 with 6:32 left, but the Bulldogs wouldn t get any closer. The Gamecocks shot 56 percent (28-of-50) for the field and made nine of their 20 3-pointers, compared to 37.7 percent (23-of-61) shooting from the field for The Citadel. The Bulldogs had 17 offensive rebounds compared to eight for South Carolina. Tre' Kelley scored 15 points and had seven assists, while Brandon Wallace added 10 points and five blocks for the Gamecocks. South Carolina struggled from the outside, making only one of 13 attempts from behind the arc. Tre Kelley, the Gamecocks top scorer coming in, led the way with 15 points. But Kelley was off target as well, missing 11 of his 18 shots. The Tigers pulled away at the end of the first half after K.C. Rivers hit a jumper and two 3-pointers for a 31-22 lead. It was Clemson s third-straight victory in the series. Mays finished a three-point play with 8:57 left that extended the lead to 53-38. Three minutes or so later, Mays completed another three-point play as the Tigers went up 62-46. Mays also had seven rebounds, helping Clemson to a dominating 45-30 edge on the boards. The South Carolina senior surpassed his career performance of 20 points, set against Lipscomb earlier this season. He also matched his previous high of seven blocks in the first half, several times swatting back the inside attempts of Cougars forward Jermaine Johnson. Wallace, at 6-foot-9, even knocked down a 3-pointer in a first-half run by the Gamecocks (5-2) that turned a tight game into a blowout. Coming in, this one was about Cremins, the whitehaired wonder lured down South from the Bronx by the late Frank McGuire nearly four decades ago to help build a Southern basketball power. He got a pleasant reception from the - just about all fans heeding Odom s call not to boo their former hero for jilting the Gamecocks 13 years ago. 13 No. 9 Kansas 70 South Carolina 54 Jan. 7, 2007 (14,713) USC (10-3) had hoped to continue a six-game winning streak of its own and got a boost when leading scorer Tre Kelley returned from a left knee sprain that caused him to miss a victory over Western Carolina on Jan. 3. But Mario Chalmers scored 19 points and Darrell Arthur added 17 to help No. 9 Kansas win its seventh straight with a 70-54 victory over USC. Chalmers had 13 of his points in the first half when the Jayhawks opened a 14-point lead. The Jayhawks disrupted Kelley throughout, holding him to 10 points, nearly 7 fewer than his average, on 3 of 16 shooting. The effort helped Kansas escape with the win, something No. 1 UCLA, No. 5 Duke, No. 7 Arizona and No. 8 Alabama all couldn t do on Saturday. USC got it to 41-37 on Dominique Archie s foul shot with 13:42 remaining. But KU put things away with a 13-5 run. Arthur had a short jumper and a threepoint play to end the surge and put KU ahead 54-42. Dwayne Day led the Gamecocks with 13 points. UGA took a 41-28 advantage in rebounds and held the Gamecocks to 35.1 percent shooting. Georgia s Mike Mercer scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. Carolina has lost three straight, including two to top-10 teams. Last Sunday, the Gamecocks were beaten 70-54 by No. 6 Kansas. Kelley had 24 points and was the only Gamecock in double figures. With the win, the Gators put away their biggest nemesis from their 2006 national championship season. USC swept both regular-season meetings a season ago, then took Florida to the buzzer before losing the SEC tournament final, 49-47. But this one was the most lopsided loss in coach Dave Odom s six seasons at South Carolina. When the Gamecocks chose to pack the middle to contain Noah and Al Horford, Humphrey made them pay from the outside - almost all the shots without a defender in his face. Crawford had 17 points in the first half to help the Wildcats (15-3, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) open a double-digit lead. Randolph Morris added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky, which has not lost since falling at North Carolina on Dec. 2. It was the worst home loss for South Carolina (10-6, 0-3) since a 64-11 defeat by Wake Forest in 1915. Crawford was 3-for-3 from 3-point range over the first 6 minutes. When SC tightened up its defense, Crawford easily found his points closer to the basket. He had three field goals and Morris converted a layup during a 3-minute sequence to put UK ahead 30-19. When South Carolina cut the lead to 30-25 - the closest it would come the rest of the way - the Wildcats finished the half on a 7-2 run, including two free throws by Crawford. South Carolina held off the taller, stronger Razorbacks thanks to Kelley and the timely inside bucket by Baniulis. With the game tied at 56, Bryce Sheldon missed a 3- pointer and teammate Brandon Wallace tipped the ball off the backboard. There was Baniulis, all by himself, for the simple shot that gave South Carolina the lead for good with 2:11 to play. After Gary Ervin missed a 3-pointer for the Razorbacks, Kelley hit a 14-foot jumper to put the Gamecocks up 60-56. Arkansas could get no closer. The six SEC Western Division teams winless in 16 games away from home this season. Darian Townes led the UA with 17 points. For a while, it looked like Townes would bring UA its first road victory. His inside basket with 7:14 to go gave the Razorbacks a 53-51 lead. He followed with a threepoint play two minutes later that tied the game at 56. This game looked very much like the others South Carolina s played during its two weeks of struggles with Arkansas gliding out to a 26-21 lead. But Kelley got some help from his teammates to pull USC back with a 14-4 run to close the opening half. Kelley started the charge with a basket and a 3- pointer. Then Archie followed with a tip in and a 3 of his own. Finally Dwayne Day broke out for two running layups after Gamecock steals to send USC into the break ahead 37-30. It was the Gamecocks first halftime advantage since leading Western Carolina 29-28 on Jan. 3.
