OU holds an 11-2 all-time advantage, with IPFW s last win coming on Jan. 19, 2008, at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. IPFW s two wins in the series have both come in Fort Wayne, with the previous win for the Mastodons coming in the 1990-91 season. RIIKKA ON THE BOARDS Senior point guard Riikka Terava has long been known as one of the most efficient players doling out assists. However, she set a new career standard in rebounds with her 10-rebound performance at Columbia. BIG B With the injury to Brittany Carnago, freshman Bethany Watterworth has been thrust into a starting role. In her first game, she took to the starting lineup about as easily as a fish takes to water - scoring 23 points with 11 rebounds in her first collegiate game. She later topped that with a 24-point effort at home against Toledo. COMING UP BIG After struggling offensively in the first few games, junior guard Stacey Farrell turned in a career-best performance against Marquette, scoring 14 points. While she was held scoreless in OU s loss to Bowling Green, Farrell ran the point nearly flawlessly. The junior notched a five-assist effort with no turnovers, grabbing three rebounds with one steal. FINDING HER STROKE Senior forward Hanna Reising struggled at times from the floor last season while hindered by a nagging injury from her sophomore year, but appears to be back on track this season. The senior scored 13 points off the bench against Bowling Green on 6-of-10 shooting. She followed that up with a 15-point effort against Marygrove, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor. CLUB NOTHING This paragraph has absolutely nothing to do with today s game. ROSTER STABILITY While the Golden Grizzlies lose two starters from last year s team in Jessica Pike and April Kidd, along with reserves Aubrey Freshour, Kira Carter, and Courtney Walters, OU returns a lineup to the floor that will bring a tremendous amount of experience. The injury to senior Riikka Terava forced her to redshirt, so OU will enter the 2009-10 season with four returning starters, with Melissa Jeltema, Sharise Calhoun, and Brittany Carnago returning; while Hanna Reising has also seen significant time as a starter over the course of her career. HONORS AND ACCOLADES Several OU players earned postseason honors last year. Senior Jessica Pike was tabbed first team all-summit League, while also being named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, and the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Melissa Jeltema earned second team all-summit League honors for the second consecutive year, while Brittany Carnago was an honorable mention pick. Sharise Calhoun was named to the all-newcomer team. THE NON-LEAGUE SCHEDULE Oakland will once again play a brutal non-league schedule. In addition to home games against Purdue, Bowling Green, Toledo, Saint Louis, Rochester College and Detroit; OU will hit the road to play Big Ten foes Illinois and Penn State, as well as BIG EAST opponent Marquette and Ivy League member Columbia. NOW JOINING THE 1,000-POINT CLUB Melissa Jeltema crossed the 1,000-point threshold with her 18-point performance late last season against UMKC and now has 1,155 career points entering her senior campaign. She pased Teresa Vondrasek for 17th all-time at OU with her 17-point performance against Marygrove. THE 200 CLUB Head coach Beckie Francis picked up her 200th win as a head coach during OU s semifinal win over North Dakota State. However, it was not the first milestone reached by the head coach - Francis picked up her 150th win at Oakland with her win over Saint Louis earlier this season. She trails Bob Taylor (1986-97), who with 251 wins on the OU bench is the all-time winningest women s basketball coach at Oakland. DOUBLE-DOUBLES Melissa Jeltema turned in 10 of OU s 15 double-doubles of the 2008-09 season, with April Kidd also picking up four. Brittany Carnago turned in a triple-double against Centenary, also counting to the double-double totals; and when players double up, predictable results occur - the Golden Grizzlies only lost once when a player hits a double-double. JUST SAY NOJA With the addition of Anne Noja (formerly Hafeli) to the OU coaching staff, the Golden Grizzlies are in the unique position of having two assistant coaches on staff who previously played for head coach Beckie Francis, as fellow assistant Katie Wolfe also played for the Golden Grizzlies under Francis. THE RETURN OF RIIKKA Last season the Golden Grizzlies were hit early with the loss of point guard Riikka Terava to injury. The Helsinki, Finland native provided a steady hand at the point for the Golden Grizzlies while also serving as a defensive stopper. OU will look to Terava to help set the tone for the offense this year, now that she has recovered and returned to the lineup. HOME SWEET HOME The friendly confines of the Athletics Center O Rena were just that for the Golden Grizzlies - friendly - during the 2008-09 season. Oakland posted a 13-3 record on its home court, while going 9-0 in league play at home. POSTSEASON-BOUND? This year will be no different than any other year for the Golden Grizzlies - the team enters the campaign with high hopes for a postseason berth. OU has made four postseason appearances since moving to Division I, and is hoping to make that five this year with either a Summit League regular-season title (which would earn an automatic berth to the WNIT) or a Summit League tournament title (which earns the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament). PRESEASON HONORS Senior Melissa Jeltema was the only OU player to be named to the preseason all-summit League team, earning a first-team selection. GRIZZLIES ON THE DOLE One of the hallmarks of the Oakland motion offense is the team s emphasis on making the extra pass. This was on full display during the Marygrove game, as Oakland registered assists on 32 of 36 baskets, and assists on the first 14 baskets of the game. JUST OAKLAND Many media outlets have incorrectly referred to Oakland University as Oakland (Mich.) - please be advised that this is incorrect, as there is only one Oakland University and the University is affiliated with neither the Michigan or Michigan State systems. The correct first reference is Oakland University and acceptable subsequent references are Oakland or OU. THIS WEEK IN OU HISTORY December 4, 1984 - Brenda McLean blocks a school record 12 shots as Oakland falls 63-60 to Eastern Michigan. November 30, 1985 - The Golden Grizzlies beat Milwaukee 81-55 to win the Grand Rapids Press Tournament. Sarah Knuth scores 20 and Margaret Boyle adds 17 for the then Pioneers. December 5, 1987- OU beats Indiana Tech 73-61 to push its winning streak to 13 straight games. Debbie Delie leads the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds. December 2, 2007 - Oakland upsets #21 Florida State 85-75. Hanna Reising scored 23 points while Jessica Pike added 20. The Golden Grizzlies become just the second team in Summit League history to beat two top 25 ranked teams.
