What is County Events? County Events is the time and place for members to showcase what they know! Every year at County Events 4-H members participate and compete with one another. County Events fosters belonging, mastery, and independence in 4-H members. It is an essential part of the 4-H experience. Youth have the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and feel confident about their expertise in different subject areas. The Purpose of County and District Events County and district level presentations provide a valuable teaching and learning situation. They give Junior, Intermediate, and Senior participants an opportunity to: Practice making oral and visual presentations. Learn presentation techniques from observing others. Receive constructive suggestions for improvement. Receive recognition for efforts. All 4-H events should foster a strong educational 4-H program by providing physical, mental, social, and emotional growth experiences for individual 4-H members. Events should give 4-H members positive, meaningful experiences in leadership and citizenship development. Competitive events are a planned part of the 4-H curriculum, designed to allow youth to: Gain experience and develop skills in gathering, preparing, and presenting educational information. Enhance decision making capabilities. Make public presentations. Learn standards by which comparisons are drawn. Develop good sportsmanship. Competitive events are just one of the many teaching methods used by 4-H leaders and Extension Agents. County Events are a very important part of participation in 4-H beyond the club level. At county events you can compete in the following activities: Demonstrations Illustrated talks judging/other event (i.e. Fashion Revue), as long as schedule permits. Only the top senior district winner who won a blue ribbon will be eligible to compete at the state level. Please contact the State Events Coordinator to confirm the schedule for these events. Youth at county and district levels can be encouraged to participate in both demonstrations and judging or other events. 4-H ers may compete in contests and be a council delegate. Categories: Instrumental: Musical instruments of all descriptions. Vocal: Singing numbers. Dance: All dance, baton, and acrobatic routines. Dramatic and Novelty: Skits, stunts, pantomimes, monologues, puppetry, ventriloquism, impersonations, etc. General: Acts which include two or more of the above classifications. Act Size and Length: Acts may be presented by an individual or a group. Group acts should be limited to a maximum of five participants. Entertainment groups with more than five members are discouraged because of the difficulty in facilitating a group that size. However, this does not rule out participation by such a group if their talent is of exceptional quality and they meet all other requirements. Such an act must be cleared through the State 4-H Office prior to District Events (contact Associate Dean for 4-H Programs). Acts with more than five participants who are not cleared through the State 4-H Office in advance will not be allowed to perform at Florida 4-H University. The time for each act can range from 3-5 minutes. Participants will have a one minute warning and then the act will be called at 5 minutes. This is a competitive event and will be judged at Florida 4-H University. Participants will be required to attend a rehearsal. The University of Florida bans live animals (i.e. mammals, amphibians, reptiles, etc.) from UF facilities where the State 4-H Share the Fun Competition is held, with the exception of seeing-eye dogs. Therefore, it is essential that the State 4-H Office be contacted prior to Florida 4- H University regarding whether an act involving an animal or reptile will

State Requirements: Entries must have completed at the county and district levels. Awards Blue, Red, and White awards will be awarded based on quality of performance. First, second, and third place will be awarded to the highest scoring individuals. The top three senior age winners at state competition may have the opportunity to participate in the Western National 4-H Roundup Public Speaking contest in Denver, Colorado at their own expense. Horse Public Speaking The rubrics are the same, however, the State Competition is held at a different time, because the regional horse public speaking competition is held during the same week as 4-H University. Registration (due at the beginning of June) for the Horse Public Speaking is available through the University of Florida s Animal Sciences Department. Share the Fun The 4-H Share the Fun Program is designed to help 4-H ers discover their talents, develop them, and have opportunities to share those gifts with others. It is part of the 4-H Recreation Program and is conducted at County, District, and State levels. The objective of the Share-the-Fun Program is to enhance the following areas: appreciation of talent, leadership, confidence, interest in special training, and the ability to discover opportunities for wholesome recreation. County: Each county determines eligibility based on current enrollment and participation standards. It is suggested that separate junior, intermediate and senior programs be conducted. District: Each county may submit two acts for senior competition, two acts for intermediate competition and two acts for junior competition. Junior and intermediate winners may be selected using the Share-the-Fun score card, however, there are no provisions for junior or intermediate participation beyond the district level. Participants may refine their routine from district to state as long as it does not change the act dramatically. State: During Florida 4-H University, individual 4-H ers can participate in one demonstration OR public speaking event AND either Share-the-Fun or one Fashion Revue (fashion show/sewing) Photography Public Speaking/Horse Public Speaking Graphic Design Share-The-Fun (talent show) Demonstrations & Illustrated Talks We all know how to do something. From tying your shoes to making a cake, we all can tell someone step by step how to do a task. That s exactly what a 4-H demonstration is; demonstrating to an audience how to do something. When making your own 4-H demonstration you want to think of something that you know well enough that you can teach to other people. Having the subject be related to your 4-H project is nice, but it isn t required. An illustrated talk is very similar to a demonstration, but you are speaking about a specific subject, not teaching a task. To make your 4-H demonstration/ illustrated talk you want to: Have an introduction/hook to your presentation Introduce yourself, age, years in 4-H and you can add how many demonstrations you have done Tell them what you are going to tell them Tell them Tell them what you told them Conclude your presentation Ask if there are any questions You want to speak loud and proud! You know your information, and if you forget something small, no one will notice but you! The categories for demonstrations and illustrated talks are: Animals Citizenship and Leadership Family and Consumer Sciences Healthy Living Nature and the Outdoors Plants and Gardening Science and Technology

Communication and Expressive Arts Timing for Speeches: Juniors & Intermediates: 3-12 minutes and Seniors: 5-12 minutes. If you are under or over these times, points will be deducted. Rules for Competition No living vertebrates may be brought to district or state level events. A team can be no more than 2 people. State entries must have competed at the county/district levels. Each presentation will be the same from district level to state level. A 4-H er should definitely improve, but the presentation must remain basically the same. Participants must provide all equipment and supplies for their presentations The Demonstration/Illustrated Talk and Public Speaking competitions combine two forms of achievement and recognition for youth. These are: *Standards of Excellence established by experts (as defined by the scorecards). By measuring personal progress against standards of excellence, youth can gain Insight into their own efforts and abilities. *Peer Competition, a panel of judges subjectively identifies, in a concrete time and place, the best teams or individuals through rankings. It is a motivator for some youth, but is inappropriate for youth under the age of eight. Fashion Revue Fashion Revue is for garments youth have constructed (sewn) or re-purpose an outfit for competitive event. Contestants who break this rule will be subject to penalization by the judges. Speech must have been specifically prepared for, as part of, the 4-H Public Speaking Contest. All requirements set forth in general regulations for participation in the Florida 4-H University must be satisfied for senior participants at the state level. Speeches by senior 4-H ers should be no less than 5 and no more than 7 minutes in length.
