The Feilding Festival of Cycling A bit of history Joe Allen, the great name behind our classic race, was a life member of the Feilding Cycling Club and gave the club a life time of service. He was also a life member of the West Coast North Island Centre and served on the Centre for a long period. He started cycling in 1931 at the tender age of 11 and accomplished many feats along the way until he decided to call it quits in 2005 at the age of 85. He was involved with the administration side of the sport and represented the Feilding Club as either a committee member, President, Secretary, or Club Captain. He had great enthusiasm for cycling and the Feilding Cycling Club and was a true clubman. The contribution he made to the club was enormous. The Feilding Festival of Cycling was first held back in 2008. However the Joe Allen Classic race which is the backbone of the Festival has a much longer history. The race itself started as a Feilding Apiti and return race in 1948. The winner of this race, the first person over the line receives the Thomas Collins Shield and the fastest rider receives the Joe Allen Memorial Trophy. Past winners of the various trophies have included famous riders like Ron Cheatley of Wanganui, Bryan Bate, Adam Curry, Luke McCarthy, Brett Tivers and Mike McRedmond from Palmerston North The Feilding Festival of Cycling FFOC first came about as a collaboration between the three major cycling clubs in the Manawatu: Feilding Cycling Club, Palmerston North Marist Cycling Club and Manawatu Masters Cycling club. Over the years the event has grown and changed in format with different events being added to what it is today. The aim remains the same - to promote cycling in the Manawatu region

Feilding Festival of Cycling As cycling becomes a more popular sport throughout New Zealand, it s fantastic that these events make it possible for all types of people to get out there and have a go. The cycling community in the Manawatu is stronger than ever. We would like to wish all the best to the competing riders! Good luck! Manawatu offers wonderful options for cyclists both new and experienced and the ride to Apiti via Kimbolton is certainly one of the better roads that our wonderful country roads in Manawatu provide. Cycling is an excellent way to enjoy our countryside while achieving a good level of fitness. We would like to think that through our sponsorship, new budding cyclists will take this wonderful sport and achieve goals that perhaps were once a dream. Enjoy the ride.
