PARKERSBURG COUNTRY CLUB 1902 NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2018 FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Greetings and Salutations, This will be my last chance to wish everyone a joyous, safe and happy holiday. The Club will be packed with parties this month, including our Cheer party. If you missed last year's, don't miss again. I'm sure Megan and Chef will have some special surprises and I know Carl will have the place looking spectacular! Although the winter is slow for any club where golf is the primary focus, indoor activities can be a great time to meet new friends and spend cold days in the Club watching sports. Keep an eye out for both special offers and special events over the coming months. As you may remember, the Board formed a 501(c) (3) charitable organization to support youth sports, particularly golf. The entity is formally titled, Parkersburg Country Club Youth Sports Association, Incorporated. Contributions are fully tax deductible and will serve to support the next generation of golfers. This program really took off last year and we are even supplying youth clubs at Minibel for the students to practice. Many youth and schools were impacted and we expect to expand the program next year. If you want more details on this spectacular program, just ask Scott or Adam. We thank you for your contributions. Please consider this charity for your year-end gifting. Maintenance season has ended and renewal and upgrade season has begun. From the course to the clubhouse, we use the fall and winter seasons to refresh and upgrade all aspects of the Club. There is nothing fancy or sexy about what happens, but the efforts the staff will expend over the next few months will keep your club the best in the State. Pat will be advancing the steady improvements he and his crew are making to the course. The Greens Committee recently had a great session where they looked at both the short and long range development of the course. BJ and his crew will be addressing more major maintenance issues. Status quo is not in the vernacular; constant improvement is the goal. Your Board has completed the budgeting process for the upcoming year and everything is looking positive. Membership gains last year are helping to offset the effects of our aging membership. We are welcoming new young members, many with families, and that is paramount to the long term viability of our club. Not only is your club the best quality club in the State, it is also the best bargain. If you have a friend you believe would enjoy our environment, just give Kate their name. The next letter I write will be for 2019, I can't believe how quickly time passes. I wish all members and their families a wonderful Christmas, Hanukah, or other religious time of praise and thanksgiving, and a prosperous new year. Until next time, I'll see you at the Club Ed McDonough
FROM THE GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT As the year 2018 comes to a close the green department will be getting into our winter work. We will be addressing the last of the greenside bunkers and continue to prune and cut down trees. It becomes an issue to do any work, let alone work that involves heavy equipment, when it is wet like this. We are going to try to work in the best way possible, so we have the least amount of collateral damage. Many people ask me what we do when the weather really falls apart and we can not get on the golf course. There is a lot of indoor work we must do before the next season. I figured this would be a good time to inform people of some of the maintenance stuff that has to be done. Of course J.D. and Kenny spend all winter doing maintenance on our equipment and sharpening blades. The rest of the guys that stay the winter will paint and repair all trashcans. Take apart all ball washers clean them, put all new gaskets in them and paint them. Repaint all the tee markers that faded through the summer. All the benches come in and get boards replaced and the ones that need painted or stained are redone. All bunker rakes are checked and repaired That doesn t seem like it is that much work, but once you start to think about how many of these accessories are on the course it adds up quickly. We always have plenty of work to keep us busy all winter. Pat Maher Course Superintendent
FROM THE GOLF SHOP Our 2018 Golf Season has come and gone and now we are looking forward to what should be a very exciting 2019 Golf Season. We will continue to grow our clubs golf schedule with more and more offerings to engage our members while at the same time, creating more core golfers. On the State-Wide scene, we will be hosting the 86 th West Virginia Open Championship the week of June 17 th 21 st. There are many ways to become involved in this event, from volunteering tournament week to becoming a sponsor of the event (all sponsorship levels include a foursome in the Pro-Am) or even getting your game in shape to qualify and play in the tournament. More and more information will be coming out in the coming months as the club is really looking forward to making this the best WV Open ever. There are a couple of new events to look forward to next year that we are working on now. The first is a second Member Member Tournament that will take place in the fall and include multi-format matches to create a fun and competitive event. The second will be a huge undertaking that Adam and I are looking forward to. We will be organizing a PGA Junior League Team (basically like little league golf) that will be targeted towards beginner and recreational young golfers in the 13 and under age range. Our team will have scheduled practices and matches against other teams within our region. This new team concept league has proven to make golf fun for all participants as we expose our juniors to this great game. Every aspect of this program, from the match format to the team uniforms is geared to create a real excitement with the competitors. More information about the program is available at pgajuniorleague.com and we will begin our marketing campaign for Team PCC in February. Finally, 2019 is a year of change in the golf world as the USGA / R&A have issued a complete revision of the Rules of Golf. We will be hosting a Rules Seminar on Tuesday, March 5 th to try and bring everyone up to speed on the changes. I will also start sending out weekly articles to the membership with rule by rule updates to help with digesting all of the changes beginning in January. As always, please call me with any questions you may have regarding ANYTHING golf. I hope you all have an awesome Christmas Season and I can t wait for our 2019 golf season.
