Their achievement embodied everything that is great about Marden Russets: apart from the boys indisputable talent (the squad includes nine county players), they were able to draw upon the expertise of a coaching team of all ages from Young Leaders to senior players. It was a real club team effort, particularly on Finals Day when the Farmy Army supporters turned out in force to cheer on the boys, wearing Marden kit from every generation, their enthusiasm making us the envy of our opposition teams. This Marden spirit shines through across all age groups - our juniors are the key to the successful future of the club as a whole and warmly welcomed into the senior teams. The future certainly looks bright as we prepare for the exciting move to our new ground in 2017: with two astro pitches and a modern clubhouse it will take our facilities to a new level and open up multiple opportunities. We continually strive to improve the juniors hockey experience and last season we entered more competitions than ever before, pioneered weekly training sessions for U7s-U10s and introduced single year squads for the older age groups depending on numbers. These initiatives all proved highly successful but increased the work load: with 330 juniors and three astro pitches to juggle, running the club involves a huge amount of work from volunteers so please do offer any help you can. You don t have to be a hockey expert for many of the tasks involved! 2 3

Our Junior Committee was formed four years ago to enable everyone involved to share information and ideas on a regular basis, thereby maximising the children s enjoyment. The Committee oversees the Junior Section, ensuring a consistent approach across all age groups and a smooth transition between different squads as players move up through the club. We organise training schedules and the recruitment and training of coaches, attending courses to comply with England Hockey best practice. We also liaise on logistics such as kit suppliers and equipment ordering, pitch bookings and match fixtures/tournaments and act as a link with the Marden senior teams and Kent Hockey. We also deal with any complaints. Joy is the first port of call for enquiries and your Squad Manager for day-to-day issues but please contact any member of the Committee if you have any questions or ideas. TEAM SELECTION Team selection for matches and tournaments is often a controversial issue and we have adopted the following guidelines to help both parents and coaches: Selection All children who regularly attend training will have the chance to play in matches, although the strongest players are likely to be selected more frequently; A Team If more than one team is entered for a tournament, we will select players on ability to put out the strongest A team; Age Children should join the group according to their age on 1st September regardless of ability. Exceptions to this rule are rare, and at the discretion of the Junior Committee; Coaches Children Coaches children are likely to be selected for all matches their parent attends, providing they are regular attendees at training sessions; Coaches Decisions Please respect coaches decisions. CLUB INFORMATION CONTAINER CAFÉ AND MATCH TEAS Open every Sunday morning, the Container Café has proved a popular, high quality addition to the Club, serving hot drinks, snacks, delicious homemade cakes and biscuits, and a wide range of hot food including bacon and sausage baps, chips, soup and porridge. The café is run by Paige who did a great job last season and has some fantastic new ideas for the coming months: Many thanks to everyone for all their support please continue to visit the Café and the Clubhouse! of Marden Clubhouse We welcome the families junior members to use the bar, which is open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and Friday evenings, serving a full selection of draft and bottled drinks. KIT Our junior kit is due for an overhaul and the smart, sponsored new strip for our U14 at the Nationals has inspired us to review our suppliers. The elite, high tech sports fabrics have been researched, tried and tested to ensure maximum performance, durability and comfort, ensuring that players look their best while helping them to focus on their game. As we go to press final negotiations are still underway but the plan is for the club to place an initial order mid-september and distribute the clothing at Marden astro on Sunday mornings. Only shirts and socks will be compulsory wear (to be worn with black shorts/skorts) but there will also be a range of matching items available for those who would like the full range! Payment will be upfront via PayPal, managed by Joy Henson in the same way as for subscriptions. Huge thanks to John Sankey, bespoke furniture makers, who are very generously sponsoring the Junior playing kit, and whose smart logo will appear on shirts, shorts/skorts and hoodies. EQUIPMENT This season we are trialling the supply of Mercian playing equipment and a wide range of sticks, gum shields, shin pads, hand guards and other kit will be on sale on the first and second Sundays of the season at Marden and Cranbrook School. Subsequent orders are also possible. Prices will be highly competitive and also generate a small profit for the club. ENGLAND HOCKEY STRUCTURE England Hockey operates the Single System which provides junior coaching and competition to supplement school and club hockey, and offers a route for higher performing players to progress through county to national level. The entry level is via Junior Development Centres (JDCs) which are run by counties and take place during the Christmas term, typically 1 1 2 hours on a weekday evening. Many Marden Russets juniors pass the selection trials for JDCs and benefit from these high level coaching sessions. TEAM PERFORMANCES & SPONSORSHIPS Last season was a time of great performances by Marden Juniors and it is incredibly rewarding to see our teams punching well above their weight against much bigger clubs. Season highlights include: U12 3rd, Kent Championships; U12 Runners-Up, Kent Championships; U13 undefeated in their league; U13 joint 2nd in their league; U14 Agrii Trophy Winners, Mercian League Winners, Kent Champions, Regional Champions, National Finalists; U16 2nd in the Kent League; U18 Mercian League Winners. If you know of any local sponsorship opportunities please contact Charlie Ridge: cridge@impaxam.com NATIONAL FINALS Marden Russets U14 Win Bronze Medal What a fantastic day for Marden Russets! The U14 travelled to the Lee Valley Hockey Centre at the Olympic Park to compete against the other top seven teams in the country. The squad had already proved how strong they were, but this was always expected to be a different level of competition: no Marden team had ever reached this stage before and it was very much unchartered territory. 19 boys (including an unlucky team member with a broken arm) all played their part in a professionally run tournament that none of them will ever forget. The support from the Club was amazing, and the boys were cheered on by a huge crowd of family, friends and adult Club members, many sporting their golden Russets shirts from various generations. All were richly entertained in a spectacular setting. The competition was divided into two pools of four teams and the Marden boys were unbeaten in the group stages, winning two and drawing one. How heartbreaking for the team to lose out on the final by one goal on goal difference. They were devastated this competition offered no second chances or semi-finals: first placed in each league played for the top prize and second battled it out for the bronze medal. After consoling hugs from their supporters and an uplifting team talk from the coaches, the squad showed immense courage and determination to pick themselves up for the bronze medal play-off. The boys dug deep and channelled their frustrations into their hockey, showing tremendous fitness, agility and skill as they ran out 3-0 winners against Bath Buccaneers. They ended on a real high, showcasing some of their best play and receiving their medals to resounding applause in a formal ceremony on the Olympic pitch. 16
SUPPORTER S GUIDE Ball in the air The ball can be raised through the air by using a scooping or flicking action (aerial), providing it is not dangerous to another player. Circle or D The semi-circle in front of the goal. 15m hit Awarded if the ball crosses over one of the Back Lines and was last touched by an attacker, or if an offence is committed by an attacker in the last 15m of the pitch. Taken 15m from the Back Line, in line with where the offence was committed. Free hit Awarded for offences. The free hit can be either a Self Pass or a hit to a teammate and all players in the opposing team must be at least 5m away from the ball, unless they are in the Circle. If the free hit is in the attacking quarter, it must travel 5m before being played into the Circle, and all other attackers must also be 5m away. Goal Scored in open play or by a Penalty Corner or Penalty Stroke. The ball must be touched inside the Circle by a player from either side before being scored. Long corner Awarded if the ball crosses over one of the Back Lines and was last touched by a defender. Taken on the 23m Line parallel to the point where it crossed the back-line. Offences A penalty is awarded only when a team has been disadvantaged by an opponent breaking the rules. Most common offences include: Using the stick or hitting the ball, in a dangerous way; Playing the ball with the back of the stick; Players making contact using their body or stick with other players or their sticks; Goalkeepers touching the ball with their body outside the Circle; Players using their bodies, in particular their feet, to control or move the ball; Playing the ball above shoulder height; Obstruction - a player using their stick or body to block another player s access to the ball. Offence cards Umpires can show cards for bad or repeated offences: Green 2 minutes suspension; Yellow MINIMUM 5 minutes suspension; Red player suspended for the remainder of the match. Penalty Corner A set play awarded to the attacking team following an offence by the defending team in their Circle, or a deliberate offence in their defending quarter (see below). 5 metres required Penalty Stroke A free push, flick or scoop taken from the penalty spot, awarded for a deliberate offence in the Circle or an offence that prevents the scoring of a goal. Substitution Play isn t stopped for substitutions and there is no limit on the number of changes. Self pass A player taking a free hit or hit from the Side Line is allowed to play the ball themselves and run with the ball. Umpires A match is controlled by two umpires who work as a team, each staying close to their own Side Line. 23m Line Lines across the pitch 23 metres in from the Back Lines, signifying the end quarters. Penalty Corners Play is stopped to allow teams to take their positions. The goalkeeper and four defenders position themselves behind the Back Line while the other defenders must stay behind the Halfway Line. One attacker stands with the ball on the Back Line and passes the ball to other attackers waiting at the top of the Circle. The ball must travel out of the Circle before a shot is taken. Teams practise a variety of pre- planned Penalty Corner routines. If the first shot is a hit the ball must enter the goal no higher than the height of the goal backboard. If the first shot is a scoop or a flick then the ball can cross the Goal Line at any height. If the half time or end of match whistle is blown, the game continues until the Penalty Corner is completed. Free hit directional signal Penalty corner goal vv Penalty stroke 18 19
COMMUNITY ORCHARD Marden Russets Community Orchard is proving to be a great success and running a year ahead of schedule, with all 280 trees well established and only 5 original tree spaces left. Most members will know that our hockey club has many historic links with apple farming. As the site for our new ground replaces orchard land, a Community Orchard offers a fantastic opportunity to put something back into the countryside and also to experience a unique collection of the many unusual Russet apples. The project is being managed by Marden Cricket & Hockey Club with the help of experienced fruit grower, Clive Baxter, who is delighted with the progress so far: It is a true community project: we have given away a number of trees to a variety of local societies and organisations and a Walnut avenue has been created thanks to donations from Vice Presidents. The trees are flourishing due to the plentiful rainfall in early summer and some are even carrying a few apples. A communal Happy Hour was held on 21st August when tree holders were given a free glass of apple juice or cider as a reward for staking and tying their trees. TEAM MANAGER APPEAL Team Managers are a vital part of the junior hockey team, co-ordinating availability and fixtures to enable coaches to concentrate on planning training sessions and match tactics. Please do come forward and offer your help if you can: it really isn t an onerous role. Lou Gedney, last year s U14 Team Manager, found it a really rewarding experience: You don't need any hockey knowledge, just good organisational skills to co-ordinate parents and children and liaise with the coaches. One of the major benefits was getting to know the team and parents better - what an amazing bunch of boys! YOUNG LEADERS Marden s talented Young Leaders are key members of the coaching team, not just as a welcome pair of hands at training and matches but also as inspirational role models for the younger children. The scheme is a win-win solution for Club and teenagers alike. Dominic Barber It has been such a rewarding experience. I have learned new skills and overcome challenges such as umpiring my first game. James Golding I have really enjoyed being a Young Leader and I am keen to pursue sports coaching in the future. I enjoy giving back to the club by passing on the skills they have taught me to the younger generation. Lucy Jenkins Teaching the youngest age group was such a pleasure, as they progressed from complete beginners to a really good standard, in just one year! It made me feel proud of them all. Euan Neale It has been a fantastic opportunity, and it was particularly amazing to see how well the U14 have done - it makes me so proud to see them use the skills we have taught them in a match. Sophia Rhodes It has been a privilege training with the U11 with Clive as a supportive coach and Amanda too. It is so lovely to see all of the girls progress and I can't wait for September. Phoebe Sharp Being a Young Leader has helped me with my own game as well as having fun with the U9/10. It's been great to see their improvement over the weeks and I love doing it! NEW GROUND 2017 is set to be a momentous year for Marden Russets, with work well underway to create a new club site with fantastic facilities. As we go from strength to strength we urgently need a location that matches our hockey ambitions, and the new ground will give us the platform we need to become one of the most successful clubs in Kent. The plans encompass two brand new astros (one floodlit), a cricket pitch, four tennis courts and a stylish clubhouse. There will also be large practice areas and dug-outs between the two astros, fenced-off spectator areas and a great viewing gallery from the clubhouse balcony. As with any project of this scale there have been delays along the way and it is now unlikely that the hockey club will be based there until the beginning of next season: power lines have been diverted which were crossing the astro pitches and negotiations are still ongoing to agree a price for the existing ground. It is important that we ensure that we get everything right to ensure that we achieve our dream of building some of the best sports facilities in the south east for the local Marden community. Commuters travelling to and from Marden station will have seen that exciting progress has been already made this year - the ground has been levelled and the cricket pitch and square prepared and seeded.
