After School Soccer Sporty Squirts Curriculum Version 1 Notes: 1. In preparation for session 5 coaches need to have read the session plan prior to delivering there session in week 4. 2. Coach to use standard soccer equipment for 1st session, Please after this session review the equipment the school has available and then call the TSS management team to let them know should you need extra equipment to be able to deliver sessions in weeks 2, 3 & 4.
Week 1 Key Stage: One Program Type: After School Equipment: 14 Footballs, 24 cones, 6 tall cones, 8 bibs. Theme: Dribbling Deliver the fundamentals of dribbling. Head up & Keeping the ball close to feet Time Activity: Body Parts Coaching area required: 25 x 25 square Players dribble the ball within a square and must place a different body part on the ball on coach s command. Coaching Points: Close Control, Keeping Head Up Progression: Introduce silly forfeits to last player ready (funky chicken, etc). Get players to use a number of different body parts quickly Crab Attack Coaching area required: 25 x 20 rectangle Surfer dudes have to dribble their ball (surf board) to the other side of the beach without the crabs snapping their balls. Crabs on hands and bottoms and can only move sideways. Sharks may be used either side of the beach to attack players who have strayed in to the sea. Players having their football snapped have to put their ball in the sea and join the crabs. Last surfer left wins! Coaching Points: Keep head up, Keeping Ball Close (to avoid crabs)
Stuck in the Mud Coaching area required: 25 x 25 square Players have to stay inside Mud Monster world whilst dribbling and keep away from the mud monster who has to try and tag everyone on the back with a football (mud ball) which is in their hands. Caught players must stand with the ball on their head with feet apart shouting Help I m Stuck In The Mud. Another player releases them by kicking a football through their legs. Coaching Points: Close Control, Keeping head up Game Activity Game play. Emphasis direction players are kicking and basic rules. Keep game flowing by having a couple of footballs ready and kicking them in when another goes out of play! Coaching points: Getting players to stay in spaces.
Week 2 Key Stage: One Program Type: After School Equipment: 14 Footballs, 24 cones, 6 tall cones, 8 bibs. Theme: Passing Key points: Inside of foot, non kicking foot at side, pass through centre of the ball Five steps to heaven Coaching area required: 25 x 25 square. Players dribble the ball whilst completing different activities on coaches demand: 1. On the run (players shout on the run and start running!) 2. On the Shoe (players place sole of shoe on football and irish dance!) 3. On the Knee (players chicken dance by putting their knees alternately on the ball) 4. Head to the Floor (players put their head on the ball in a push up position!) 5. Staying alive (players perform toe taps, raise hands in the air and sing staying alive!) Army Coaching area required: 25 x 20 rectangle Players are soldiers on the BATTLEFIELD who have to get to the other side of the rectangle without being hit by enemy bombs. Coach checks players are ready by asking if they are ready and receiving an army style.yes SIR. A couple of enemy players stand at the side of battlefield firing bombs (footballs) at the soldiers as they try and make their way across on coaches command. Soldiers who are hit have to firstly start limping across in future, then crawling and if hit 3 times have to perform a dramatic death (and then join the enemy) Coaching Points: As above enemy players fire their bombs across the BATTLEFIELD using a passing technique
Coconut Shy Coaching area required: 15 x 15 square Players are in two teams facing each other, all with a football (on a line of cones). In the centre of them is a line of tall cones, which are coconuts. Players are told about coconut shy.s and how after a count of three they can try and knock a coconut over with one kick of the football. When players all kick they must stand still. Coach then awards any knocked over coconuts to that team. They then repeat until all coconuts are knocked over. Coaching Points: Inside of the foot, (knocked over coconuts by illegal passes are given back) Game Activity Game play. Emphasise strong passing technique throughout, give bonus goals
Week 3 Key Stage: One Program Type: After School Equipment: 14 Footballs, 24 cones, 4 tall cones, 8 bibs. Theme: Shooting Key points: Striking with the Laces, Knee over the ball Terminator Coaching area required: A goal area All players stay within a squared area (no ball). Inside this square all players are trying to escape from the terminator who has a laser ball and is trying to laser the other players by kicking at them below the knee. If caught players must stand frozen with their feet apart shouting I ll be back When another free player runs through their legs they are free to go again Coaching Points: Keeping head up. Awareness of other players Progression: Two or Three players as Terminators, players are out when hit. Last one in wins! Goalies and Strikers Coaching area required: A goal area One team of players placed in a line where a corner would be taken from. These players one at a time pass the ball to the coach who is on the penalty spot, coach then lays the ball forward towards the goal, player (strikers) then run around penalty spot and strike the ball in to goal ASAP. There are also a team of goalkeepers who are in line with coach at a team base on the other side of the pitch. As the strikers pass the ball, one goalie at a time may set off to run around the back of the goal and then round in front to try and save the ball. Players then join the back of their team lines. Teams have 3 minutes each and then switch over. Coaching Points: Striking with the laces, Knee over the Ball Progression: Coach tees up volleys or headers or players must strike with weaker foot.
Pokemon Stadium Two teams of players, one team sat outside half way point on one side (facing a corner), the other team at the other side of the field facing the corner at the other end of the field. Each team has a player with a number between 1-7. When coach shouts a number that player runs to the corner flag in front of them and then to the middle of their goal, they should be facing each other and run into field to battle for a football and score in opponents goal. Coaching Points: General Dribbling, Striking technique Progression: Two or three players can go at once, passes before a shot and similar restrictions Game Activity Game play. Players encouraged to shoot on sight at every opportunity. Bonus goals given for excellent technique.
Week 4 Key Stage: One Program Type: After School Equipment: 14 Footballs, 24 cones, 4 tall cones, 8 bibs. Theme: Dribbling & Shielding Coaching Points: Keeping the ball close whilst protecting the ball Foxes & Farmers Coaching area required: 25 x 25 square Players start off without a football, players are paired up. One player has a bib tucked in to the back of their shorts. Players with bib are Foxes and those without are Farmers. The Farmers have to run around and snatch foxes tails (bibs). Game ends when all foxes are caught. Players then swap roles if they leave the square they are eliminated. Coaching Points: Keeping head up, protecting bib by keeping it away from farmers Progression: One Farmer to start. Last Fox in wins, eliminated Foxes become Farmers. King of the Ring Coaching area required: 25 x 25 square Players must strive to keep their ball within the Wrestling Ring whilst trying to kick those of other players out. Players eliminated are encouraged to cheer on other players and may be rewarded by being made10 second Destroyers who can run in and kick footballs out for ten seconds. Winner is the last player within the ring, coach gradually moves inwards to make the ring smaller. Coaching Points: Protecting their ball as they practiced whilst foxes. Body in between the ball and the defender Progression: Players become destroyers immediately after being eliminated.
Game Related Activity Coach to choose one of the previously used games, either Goalies & Strikers or Pokemon Stadium Game Activity Game play. Players encouraged to attempt scoring goals with their head. Bonus goals given for headers.
Week 5 Key Stage: One Program Type: After School Equipment: 14 Footballs, 24 cones, 4 tall cones, 8 bibs. Theme: World Cup Competition Players can choose whether to play some of their favourite practices or take part in a World Cup competition. A couple of favourite games is preferred option as one hours football may be too long for some Soccer Squirts. If a World Cup, ensure players convene at a central base after each game and award points for results, sportsmanship, good pieces of skill, etc. Finish with all players taking part in one game!
