Gosh, I miss the warm weather and seeing everyone on the beach!!! I know some of us have been fishing this month, and some of you, not me, have been catching BIG bass. Please send me pictures of those last fish no matter the size. Email me at: lisa@lisabelcastro.com We had our first club meeting of the fall on Monday, November 5. We talked about a lot of upcoming issues, plans, and ideas. President Don also announced the monthly awards and awarded Striper Maniac plugs. News Flash: The 14th Island Cup Fishing Contest against the Nantucket Anglers' Club will be on Martha s Vineayrd on June 21, 22, & 23, the weekend after Father's Day! That s right, the weekend after Father s Day. Thank you so much, Victor!!! Don t forget our Christmas Party on Sunday, December 9 th. Email me at: mom1runner@aol.com Please RSVP on or before December 4. Our next monthly meeting is Monday, December 3. Karen Kukolich will be teaching on knot tying. Be there! Did you RSVP to our Christmas Party? Lisa

Club Meeting News and Notes 1. Phil Horton gave the Treasurer s report. We have $9,000 in our account. We gave away about $4,000 for our two MVRHS scholarships, $1,000 to the Rod and Gun Club for the Trout Tournament, and we also donated $200 to the Science Fair, $200 to MV Shellfish, $200 to the Bass and Bluefish Derby, $500 to Fluke for Luke, and $250 for an Ed Jerome memorial donation. 2. We voted to donate $250 to Coop s, Larry s, and Dick s Tackle Shops to create funds for children in need to purchase fishing equipment. The tackle shops will maintain records of who they give money to and how much each child receives and what they purchase. 3. Our Annual Banquet will be Saturday, January 26 at 1 PM at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. 4. Kathi Pogoda will once again organize the raffle. She has passed out the soliciation packets. Kathi is looking for an assistant to help her organize. She does NOT need help with soliciation, simply the organizing of the raffle items and the display at the Banquet. 5. Paula Sullivan will be organizing and orchestrating the food and kitchen the day of the banquet. This is Paula s 15 th year, and also her final year. Please consider stepping up to fulfill this role. 6. We voted to have more finger foods and no entrée at the Banquet. 7. We will be having our first Christmas Party on Sunday, December 9 at 2 PM at Lisa Belcastro s home at 175 Lagoon Pond Road in Vineyard Haven. There will be a sign-up list for entrees and appetizers in early December via email. Bring your own beverages, whatever drink that may be for you. The club will supply the paper products and the desserts. 8. President Don drew for the montly fishing awards. In May, only three people registered a fish. Jonathan Cornwall won the Stiper Maniac plug. Six people registered in June, and Dr. Dave won the lure. In July, six people registered with John Piekos, who also won in August. We had seventeen members registered fish in September; won. In October six people registered and Cosmo won the lure.

9. The In-House Derby ends November 30. As of this writing, Cosmo leads the Bass division with a 30.90- pounder. Phil Horton has caught the largest Bluefish at 13.70 pounds. John Piekos leads the Bonito division with his 4.90-pound Bone. And Cosmo is leading the False Albacore division with his 10.95-pound Albie. 10. President Don reported the porcelain fish given for our In-House Derby prizes have gone from $200 for the four fish to $520 last year. We voted to purchase the fish again this year, and then to look for an alternative source for 2020. 11. We will hold our Used Tackle Sale again on Memorial Day weekend. We only have about 25% of our members donating gear. We d like to see more of our members donating. 12. President Don is going to source fleeces and hooded sweatshirts, and get prices. 13. We are looking to travel to Cuttyhunk again in June. If you are interested in going, please let President Don know. 14. We still have about 40 MVSA Tote Bags left. Christmas is coming. There are probably a few people on your list who need a new tote. Hint! Hint! 15. We talked about participating in the local parades. We ll discuss this further at upcoming meetings. 16. We discussed possible meeting presenters: Fisherman s Preservation Trust, Chris Kennedy on shore birds, Gus BenDavid on the osprey program, and a possible cooking/recipe evening. 17. A possible Squid-a-thon is in the works for June (if the squid come in). 18. The 2019 Shark Tournament will be held last-minute as in when the sharks come in, the tournament will be announced. 19. Bob Lane is organizing the military care packages again. He s also making bracelets for the service men and women. If anyone is interested in helping with bracelets, please let Bob know. Bring items to donate for our troops to the next meeting.

MVSA Members in Action "What do these items have in common: a baby pacifier, metal dining fork, a tent stake, 4 empty anti-diarrhea boxes, a near-new fishing plug, a condom wrapper, 10 fireball nip bottles, and 3 gold coins? Answer: All were found by MVSA members at Saturday s Sengy cleanup. Next year, please join Prez Don and Dr. Dave (seen in the photo to the right taken at the Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 clean-up) for service to the community and shoreline, and for a new set of found treasures at the Sengy Clean-up! (ok, maybe the gold coins are an exaggeration...) Let s get those photos in. Email pictures to: Donaldscarpone@yahoo.com BE A WINNER IN THE MVSA IN-HOUSE DERBY MVSA In-House Derby - This is a fun and loosely run tournament based solely on the honor system and club members are eligible to win prizes by submitting entries for one or more of the eligible species (striped bass, bluefish, false albacore, bonito). Fish can be kept but catch and release is strongly encouraged. To determine the weight, the fish can be weighed or the weight can be estimated by using the following formula. (length x the girth squared, divided by 800=total weight). It's surprisingly accurate. HOW TO ENTER ----- You must be a paid in full member before catching and weighing in any fish. Use the weigh-in slip on the MVSA website and make as many copies as you need. When you catch a fish you want to enter, use the calculation above or weigh on a digital fishing scale. To be eligible for consideration, your fish must conform to the minimum sizes below: Striped bass 32" Bluefish 22" Bonito 21" False Albacore 25" Boundaries: To be eligible, a fish must be caught in or around the waters of Martha's Vineyard, within MVSB & BF Derby Boundaries. (Fish caught during the trip to Cuttyhunk are not eligible for any prizes) DIVISION AND AWARDS A monthly pin will be awarded to the member that submits an entry for the largest fish in each species. All monthly entries will participate in a "luck of the draw" raffle to win a Ron McKee custom lure. All first, second and third place monthly winners will also be entered into a year-end raffle to win new fishing reels. There will be three raffles, one each for all first, second and third place entries.

A special prize will also be awarded to the member who catches and releases the largest striped bass over 20 lbs. The Angler of the Year will be determined by a point system based on monthly entries. Five points will be awarded for a first-place monthly winner, three for second, and one for third. The member who finishes the year with the most points will be declared the Angler of the Year. Entries: Must be received within seven days after the catch and may be submitted by email to Dave Balon at: WeighSlip@mvsurfcasters.org. If you do not have an email account, mail your entry to: MVSA In-House Derby, P.O. Box 3053, Edgartown, MA 02539 Slips must be postmarked within seven days of the date of catch. During the MV Bass & Bluefish Derby, there is no need to fill out our weigh-in slip; simply mail in the official MV Derby weigh-in slip. In-House Derby entry forms may be obtained on the MVSA web-site www.mvsurfcasters.org (Then go to the Club tab, 2018 In-House Derby) The Official Weigh-In Slip link is under the MVSA Derby Info section.
