New Beaverton school might not play Metro League football until 2019, other details including proposed names The map of the new Beaverton School District high school. By Mike Tokito The Oregonian on September 20, 2016 2:45 PM, updated September 23, 2016 6:12 AM Less than a year before it opens, the new Beaverton School District high school still does not have a name, a nickname or colors, but some of the details about the school s sports programs are coming into focus. Bryan Sorenson, the athletic director at another Beaverton high school, Southridge, has been hired as the athletic director for the new school, which is being built in the area known as South Cooper Mountain, at the corner of Southwest 175th and Scholls Ferry Road. Sorenson was a coach at Westview it opened in 1994 and at Southridge when it opened in 1999 before becoming the school s athletic director in 2003. The district has decided that the school will open in the 2017-18 school year with freshmen and sophomores. In 2018-19, the school will have juniors, too, and in 2019-20, will have its first graduating class of seniors -- the students who started in 2017 as sophomores.

That timeline means that in 2017, most of the new school s sports teams probably will not compete at the varsity level. None of it has been officially decided, but the thinking so far is that for team sports, we re looking at playing a frosh/jv schedule only, Sorenson said. In football, the new school might not be a full-fledged member of the Metro League until 2019, with the program playing freshman/junior schedules in 2017, then possibly an independent varsity schedule in 2018. And then that third year is when they would get a taste of the Metro in football, Sorenson said. The new school, which will be the sixth high school in the Beaverton School District, will have a capacity of 2,200 students, which when full would make it the fifth-largest high school in the state if it opened today, according to the Oregon School Activities Association, and secondlargest in Beaverton, behind Westview (2,359). The new school s opening figures to affect the OSAA s district planning as it would add a 10th school to the Metro League. Currently no Class 6A league has more than nine schools. The current four-year block of classification and league assignments ends after the 2017-18 school year. There s a lot to do before the new school will be ready to fully compete in any sports. Sorenson and the planning committee, which is headed by Todd Corsetti, will begin hiring coaches later in the fall and early winter. Corsetti was the principal at Southridge from 2010 to 2016 before accepting the same position for the new high school. Corsetti is a former football player who was an all-state pick at Silverton High and played collegiately at Linfield. Sorenson said the hope is to start posting coaching positions in November or December, although the winter break could push the hiring back into the new year. For sure by January start the interview processes and get some people on board, Sorenson said. If we can at least post by November, I think that would be good because it s going to be a big task. The more time we have better. Sorenson said that at Southridge under Corsetti, the school hired coaches through a committee, and the same method could be used at the new school. The only issue is we have so many position to fill, and doing a committee takes a lot of time and commitment, Sorenson said. Prospective coaches figure to be attracted by the school s facilities, which will include four fields with artificial turf. The school still needs a name. The district is asking for suggestions from the public, with an Oct. 14 deadline. Sorenson said the planning committee and some prospective students are hoping to

come up with their own suggestion to put into the mix with the school board, which has the final decision (Sorenson likes Cooperside ). The board will discuss the suggestions during its November meeting, then officially select a name on Monday, Dec. 12. The school colors and nickname will be decided by those within the new school s community. A spokesperson for the school district passed along a long list of suggested names the district has received, along with suggested nicknames and colors, although those were not asked for. The lone prohibition on a name is that it cannot be of a living person. The suggestions: - Cooper Valley High School - Scholls Point High School - Grande Ronde High School - Chakeipi High School - Mary Ann Spencer High School (first school teacher in Beaverton, according to the Beaverton Historical Society) - Cooper Mountain - West Hill High School - Briar Ridge High School - Scholls High School - Cooper Ridge High School - Cooper Heights High School - Progress Ridge High School - Cooper Vista High School - Valley Vista High School - Hillside High School - Spring Valley High School - Chinook Valley High School - Chinook Hills High School - Springbrook High School - Brook Valley High School - Bill Bowerman High School or Bowerman High School - Governor Victor Atiyeh (former Oregon Gov., lived in Wash. Hermiston School District growing faster than expected - Local News - T... http://www.hermistonherald.com/hh/local-news/20160913/hermiston-sch... More on Hermiston School District As soon as the Hermiston School District sets a new high in enrollment, the next year tops it. According to a district enrollment report, 5,714 students were attending Hermiston schools on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 318 more students than in September 2015. That count not only surpasses the most aggressive growth forecast calculated for the 2016-2017 school year (about 5,500 students) in a 2014 Portland State University study, it s just above the middle-growth forecast for the 2017-2018 school year. Although enrollment figures are shooting past previous expectations, district Executive Director of Operations Mike Kay said the district prepared for the surge by building five modular units over the summer. Kay said the modulars provided 10 additional classrooms, with eight currently in use, leaving the district with some additional capacity if needed. In the short term, Kay said the district will have to continue to build more modulars to provide four to six new classrooms per year From a capital construction perspective, it s the most cost-effective way to add classrooms, he said. In the long term, the district is considering a $104 million bond proposal for the May 2017 ballot, which would include rebuilding Rocky Heights and Highland Hills elementary schools, adding a new elementary school and an expansion of Hermiston High School. If the district does put the bond on the ballot, it would come less than a decade after it passed a $69.9 million bond replacing Sunset and West Park elementary schools and Armand Larive Middle School. While the new construction increased capacity, the intervening years since the bond passed in 2008 has seen student 1 of 2 10/17/2016 9:26 PM

In some cases, adding modulars isn t enough. Tricia Mooney, the assistant superintendent of human resources, said West Park has two blended classes for fourth and fifth grade, meaning a teacher is instructing students from both grades. Hermiston school enrollment has shown little sign that it will slow down, and if it continues to meet or exceed the high growth projections, Portland State is predicting the district will have about 6,500 students or more by the 2022-23 school year. According to the website Niche.com, Hermiston is currently the 28 largest school district in the state. At 6,500 students, the district would rank between the McMinnville and Corvallis school districts, which are currently rank 19th and 20th in the state for size.

Prep sports: UHSAA approves sixth classification for more sports The S... http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/printfriendly.csp?... 1 of 3 10/5/2016 10:15 AM (http://www.sltrib.com) By Trevor Phibbs The Salt Lake Tribune Published: March 29, 2016 11:12AM Updated: March 25, 2016 08:05PM Prep sports The goal of the UHSAA is more balanced competition. Orem The room was divided when one representative from the 5A classification on the Utah High School Activities Association Board of Trustees asked: What is the driving force to go to six classifications? The response from South Sanpete School District Vice President Kim Pickett was immediate and explicit: Parity. Courtesy Rob Cuff The addition of the sixth classification, those in favor believed, would equalize enrollment numbers and thus create more balanced competition. After the meeting was adjourned for lunch at the Links at Sleepy Ridge in Orem on Thursday, with the room still very much undecided, the BOT returned and eventually approved the format to align schools in six classifications by majority vote. As far as format and procedures, it s pretty much a done deal, said UHSAA Executive Director Rob Cuff. The sixth classification will be introduced for baseball, basketball, boys golf, cross-country, football, track, volleyball and wrestling for the 2017-19 realignment, which is scheduled to be finalized in November after the October 2016 enrollment numbers are released by the State Office of Education. Boys golf, which was slotted to participate with five classifications in the original format proposal, was included because of conflicts with Class 1A baseball, as 1A boys golf would have been forced to move from spring to fall with only five classes.

Prep sports: UHSAA approves sixth classification for more sports The S... http://www.sltrib.com/csp/mediapool/sites/sltrib/pages/printfriendly.csp?... 2 of 3 10/5/2016 10:15 AM Drill team, girls golf, soccer and softball will compete with five classifications; swimming and tennis will have four. Class 6A and 5A will compete with four regions, while 4A-1A will have three regions each. Football, which currently operates with six classifications, will continue to have unique regions due to fewer programs participating. The main concern for the format was travel for low-enrollment schools, specifically in the southeast corner of the state. The October 2014 enrollment numbers projected Monticello and Whitehorse to join the 2A classification. However, Cuff said fears of travel encumbrance were tempered when an additional motion to allow any school with at least 55 percent free and reduced lunch to appeal to move down one classification prior to first consideration of assigned regions. A lot of our isolated areas have schools that would now be able to apply to go down a lower classification, which would help them stay together, Cuff said. That helped address that need, so travel won t be as big of as an issue as it could have been. The BOT rejected another proposal from Mountain Crest to immediately be reassigned to the 3A classification. The Cache Valley-based school was placed in Class 5A for the recent two-year alignment, but its population has subsequently been decimated by the opening of neighboring Ridgeline High. The board felt like we didn t have any policy to address that on this alignment, Cuff said. Although the BOT felt it could not make the procedure change retroactively because of the effect on current athletic events already scheduled, Mountain Crest s plea did not go unheard. Beginning with the next realignment, any school with at least 40 percent reduction in enrollment may appeal prior to Jan. 15 of an even calendar year to move down no more than one classification. The final item on the agenda involved private and charter schools competing against public institutions. The BOT decided to extend discussion about the issue and address concerns with each region. The item was sent to the Executive Committee, which will discuss the topic in April. There may be some influence from that discussion implemented in some of our bylaws and policies, Cuff said. But it s unknown yet what that may be. tphibbs@sltrib.com Twitter: @trevorphibbs The latest UHSAA Board of Trustees approves motion to add sixth classification in various sports for next realignment.
