Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians Monday, May 19, 2014 Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH Game Time - 7:10 p.m. EDT RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Red Sox, extended their road winning streak to 11 games and stretched their overall winning streak to six games with a 6-2 win on Sunday night at Fenway Park. The top three batters in the Tigers batting order combined to go 9x14 in the win with Ian Kinsler going 4x5 with two runs scored, Miguel Cabrera recording three hits and two RBI and Torii Hunter going 2x5 with a RBI. Victor Martinez hit his 10th home run of the season and drove in two runs in the victory. Anibal Sanchez was victorious in his return from the disabled list, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits, striking out three and walking three in 5.0 innings. Five Tigers relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings and allowed only one hit to close out the win. The Tigers continue their nine-game road trip tonight as they begin a threegame series against the Indians. Following the series in Cleveland, Detroit returns home on Thursday to open a four-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers. MILLER OPTIONED TO TRIPLE A TOLEDO: Prior to last night s game, the Tigers optioned the contract of righthanded pitcher Justin Miller to Triple A Toledo. TIGERS SWEEP THE RED SOX AT FENWAY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1983: The Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Red Sox with last night s 6-2 win. It marked the first time Detroit had swept a series in Boston since sweeping a four-game series June 6-9, 1983. The Tigers pitching staff held the Red Sox offense to just three runs in the series, marking the first time the Red Sox have scored three runs or less in a series at Fenway Park since scoring three runs against Toronto from April 29-May 1, 2008. 39 GAMES DOWN, 123 TO GO: The Tigers enter tonight s game with a 27-12 record, which ranks as the best record in Major League Baseball. The 27-12 start is tied with the 1961 team for the second-best 39-game start in franchise history, trailing only the 1984 team, which was 34-5 through the first 39 games of the season. Last year, the Tigers had a 22-17 record through the first 39 games. ON THE ROAD: The Tigers enter tonight s game with a 14-4 road record and a.778 road winning percentage, which ranks as the best road mark in the American League. Detroit has won 11 straight road contests, which is the third-longest single-season road winning streak in franchise history and is the longest since a 17-game road winning streak from April 3-May 24, 1984. The Tigers 14-4 start on the road is the third best in franchise history, trailing only the 1984 team, which opened the season with a 17-1 road record, and the 1950 team, which was 14-3-1 through 18 road games. WINNING WAYS OVER THE INDIANS: The Tigers have won 19 of their last 25 games versus Cleveland, dating back to September 5, 2012. The Tigers have outscored the Indians 151-89 during the stretch. Additionally, the Tigers are 11-2 in their last 13 games against the Indians at Progressive Field dating back to September 14, 2012. The Tigers went 9-1 against the Indians in Cleveland last season. MARTINEZ ON THE MARK AGAINST THE INDIANS: Victor Martinez enters tonight s game hitting.371 (65x175) with 20 doubles, five home runs and 39 RBI in 48 career games against Cleveland. He leads all active American League players with a.371 batting average against the Indians. Martinez has recorded at least one hit in 15 of his last 16 games vs. the Indians and has eight multi-hit games against Cleveland in that stretch. MULTI-HIT IAN: Ian Kinsler recorded his 17th multi-hit game of the season last night vs. Boston, finishing the game 4x5 with two runs scored and one double. Kinsler is tied for the American League lead with 17 multi-hit games. His four-hit game last night was the 11th of his career and his first since August 27, 2013 vs. Seattle. CABRERA, MARTINEZ MASHING IN MAY: Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez have each put up impressive numbers at the plate in the month of May. Cabrera is hitting.375 (24x64) with six doubles, five home runs and 24 RBI in May, while Martinez is also batting.375 (24x64) with six doubles, six home runs and 12 RBI during May. Cabrera and Martinez s.375 batting average is tied for the American League lead this month. CABRERA RACKING UP THE RBI: Miguel Cabrera currently has 39 RBI, which ranks tied for second in the American League. Since April 22, Cabrera has driven in 32 runs, which is the most in the majors in that time span. WHAT A RELIEF: Since April 27, the Tigers bullpen has compiled a 2-1 record with seven saves, a 2.12 ERA (46.2IP/11ER), nine walks and 38 strikeouts. Detroit relievers lead the American League in ERA and rank fourth with a.215 opponent batting average since April 27. START ME UP: The Tigers starting rotation currently leads the majors with a 2.64 ERA (238.1IP/70ER) and ranks third in the American League with a.224 opponents batting average. Dating back to April 26, Tigers starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or less in 18 of 19 games. During that stretch, Detroit s starting rotation has a major league leading 2.14 ERA (118.0IP/28ER). TONIGHT S TIGERS STARTER - DREW SMYLY THE SCOOP ON SMYLY: In his second full season with the Tigers, Smyly will make his sixth start, eighth appearance overall, of the season tonight vs. the Indians. LAST TIME OUT: Smyly turned in his third quality start of the season, but received a no decision in his start at Baltimore on Tuesday. He worked 6.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out seven and walking two. 2014 GAME-BY-GAME RUNDOWN ON THE ROAD: Smyly has put up impressive numbers in three road appearances, including two starts, this season. He has a 1-0 record with a 0.56 ERA (16.0IP/1ER) and 16 strikeouts on the road in 2014. Smyly has made 49 appearances, including 12 starts, in his career on the road. Smyly has a 7-1 record with one save and a 2.91 ERA (111.1IP/36ER) in his career away from Comerica Park.
