Calculating a Batter s OBP On-Base percentage (OBP) is a statistic that expresses how often a batter reaches base on hits, walks, or being hit by a pitch. OBP differs from batting average (AVG) because AVG only includes a batter s hits. To calculate OBP, adds hits (H), walks (BB), and amount of times hit by a pitch (HBP). Then, divide that value by the sum of at bats, walks, amounts of times hit by pitch, and sacrifice flies. The equation is: H + BB + HBP AB + BB + HBP + SF 1. In 2014, Coco Crisp had 114 hits, 66 walks, and 6 sacrifice flies in 463 at bats. He was hit by 0 pitches. What was his OBP? = OBP 2. In 2014 Brett Lawrie had 64 hits, 16 walks, and 2 sacrifice flies in 259 at bats. He was hit by 5 pitches. What was his OBP? 3. Sam Fuld had 84 hits, 43 walks, and 2 sacrifice fly in 351 at bats. He was hit by 0 pitches. Craig Gentry had 59 hits, 17 walks, and 0 sacrifice flies in 232 at bats. He was hit by 5 pitches. Josh Reddick had 96 hits, 28 walks, 3 sacrifice fly in 363 at bats. He was hit by 1 pitch. Rank the OBP from highest to lowest. 4. If Stephen Vogt had 75 hits, 16 walks, 1 sacrifice fly, and was hit by a pitch 1 time in 269 at bats. What was his OBP?
PREDICTIONS 1. The average length of a baseball game is about 3 hours. What is the average length in minutes of an inning in a regular 9-inning game? Using that value, what is your prediction for the length of a game that lasts 18 innings? Answer: 2. There are 162 games during the regular season. 81 home games and 81 away games. Stephen Vogt hits 5 home runs after playing the first 40 games of the season. If he keeps up this pace, how many homeruns do you predict he will hit during the entire season? Answer: 3. On average, a starting pitcher pitches once every 5 games. If the team plays 162 games and Sonny Gray wins half of his starts, how many wins will he have at the end of the season? Answer: 4. Brett Lawries goal is to have 130 hits by the end of the season. After the first quarter of the season, he has 45 hits. Is he on pace to reach his goal? If not, how many hits does he need to hit in each of the 3 remaining quarters of the season? If so, what can you predict that number will be? Answer:
CALCULATING A PITCHER S ERA In baseball, a statistic called an Earned Run Average or ERA is used to track the average number of earned runs a pitcher allowed for every nine innings. The lower a pitcher s ERA, the less number of runs a pitcher has given up in the innings he has pitched. To calculate a pitcher s ERA, you multiply the total number of earned runs (ER) by 9 and divide the result by total innings pitched (IP). The equation is: (ER) x 9 IP 1. In 2014, Dan Otero pitched 86.2 innings and gave up 22 earned runs. What was his ERA? = ERA Answer: 2. In 2013, Sonny Gray had 19 earned runs and 64 innings pitched. In 2014, Sonny Gray had 75 earned runs and 219 innings pitched. Solve to find Gray s ERA for 2013 and 2014. What season did Gray have better ERA? Answer: 3. In 1972, which of the following A s pitchers had the best ERA? - Catfish Hunter: 67 earned runs in 295.1 innings pitched. - Rollie Fingers: 31 earned runs in 111.1 innings pitched. - Vida Blue: 47 earned runs in 151.0 innings pitched. Answer: 4. In 2012, Sean Doolittle had 16 earned runs in 47.1 innings pitched. In 2013, Sean Doolittle had 24 earned runs in 69.0 innings pitched. In 2014, Sean Doolittle had 19 earned runs in 62.2 innings pitched. a) What year was his best ERA? b) How many total earned runs has he given? c) How many innings has Doolittle pitched with the A s? FUN FACT: Sonny Gray was named AL Pitcher of the Month in both April 2014 (4-1, 2.06 ERA) and in July 2014 (5-0, 1.03 ERA). It marked the third time in Oakland A s history that a pitcher won the award twice in the same season. The other two to receive this honor were Dave Stewart in 1990 and Barry Zito in 2001.
