Racers PM, final: Are you ready to join the Vikings? Nordic Islands Adventure Race and NIARgames, welcomes you to an adventure of a lifetime between Stockholm, the crossing of the Åland Islands through the archipelago to finally reach the finish line in Turku, Finland. This will be the final racer PM with all necessary information before you arrive to the race start. Separately you ll also find the logistic scheme for the race. Nordic Islands Adventure Race, STARTS Saturday August 12 th at noon (12:00 pm). New website: www.niargames.com KAYAK crossing Ålands Sea: At this crossing wetsuit or dry suit will be mandatory. This is a proactive action from the coast guard and the Search and Rescue team. All kayaks will be equipped with a towline in the front of the kayak and the hull marked with reflector tape this is NOT allowed to remove, it s there for your safety. Spray skirt and plastic kayaks without rudders will be supplied for all teams with this same modification. Each team member also needs an emergency flare (you can buy these from the organization at Downtown Camper for 150SEK apiece) within reach on the life jacket for this section. This will be mandatory, and you must show a STAFF member that you carry one before leaving Sweden. On this section you don t have to carry tent and sleeping bag. Safety: NIAR holds over six safety boats for this section, plus boats from the Search and Rescue team from both Sweden and Åland. NIAR also have access to helicopters through 112. SAR has a respond time within 30 minutes if needed. 1
All or STAFF will be recently trained in CPR and all our captains are experienced and well trained with open sea and high-speed rescue. At night white strobe must be visible 360 degrees with steady light. Weather: The NIAR organization has decided to apply a storm zone to this section. If wind is greater than 10 m/s and/or the waves are higher than 1,5 meter (150 cm) this section will be cancelled. Teams will than have to take the ferry, leaving at 10:00 am, 3:00 pm or 8:00 pm from Grisslehamn. Your time will be stopped when you arrive to TA3. There will be a restart 30 min after the teams arrives to TA4. All teams that are within 1 hour will start in race order in a pursuit format. All other teams will start 30min after in a mass start. More information about this section will be announced at the race briefing on Saturday. NOTE: The Baltic Sea is one of the coldest seas in the world with an average temperature of 4C. INSURANCE Please make sure to have a copy of your insurance paper with you. This must be shown to the STAFF at check in at Downtown Camper. If helicopter rescue is needed this is an expensive action and the NIAR organization won t let anyone start the race without showing his or her insurance paper at check in. ABSEIL Please watch the instruction movie at the Athlete Zone forum on Facebook. This is mandatory, and the technique showed would be the only one allowed for the abseil. Shoes with spikes or studs are NOT allowed on the rappel. SWIMRUN All water exits will be marked on the map with waypoint or CP:s. Strobe must be attached/worn under the swim cap at all swims after sunset. NIAR organization will supply everyone with swim caps. NIAR organization recommends this strobe for the Swimrun and Kayak section. This can be purchased in the athlete shop at Downtown Camper. www.orbiloc.com. For more Swimrun rules please check website. TICS Racing in Scandinavia the worrying animal is the very small tic. For racers make sure to read more in our news about TICS. Link: http://nordicislandsar.com/tics-tbe-andborrelia/ TA BAGS All teams must bring their own TA bags. Three 130 Liter bags are allowed with a maximum weight of 20 kg. One paddle bag and one Pack Raft bag will be supplied to each team by race organization. PACK RAFT At the Pack Raft section each watercraft must be attached to at least one team member with a leech. (Winds can easily take a boat hundreds of meters in no time and it will be impossible to swim and catch up). At night white strobe must be visible 360 degrees, with a steady light. TIME ZONES Remember, as the course lingers between Sweden and Åland, Finland the time zone will change from GMT+1 to GMT+2. Meaning that, at arrival to Åland you must forward you clock one hour. ATHLETE SHOP At the athlete shop you will be able to by all sorts of kayak gear from Avanza Kayak, like glow sticks, strobe from orbiloc and emergency flares that is mandatory for the Ålands Sea. Bike equipment from Cykloteket, bike map holders from Nordenmark, energy from Training Eat Live (Huma gels, Nutrixxion, Nuitrend and Pression Hydration with opportunity to preorder for nice deals). 3
GROCERY STORE You can find three grocery stores near the hotel. ICA Nära, Coop Centralen and Hemköp Stockholm City. Small kiosks, restaurants and other stores are to be find near by the race hotel. ACCOMMODATION & FOOD Included all teams: Accommodation and all meals between august 10th to august 12th. Accommodation on board Silja Line, prize ceremony, banquet dinner on august 18th. Accommodation in Turku to all finishers*. *If you quit Nordic Islands Adventure Race, NIAR organization will not pay your accommodation until the departure in Turku on august 18th. 4
SCHEDULE: Friday 10 th : There are busses leaving every 20 min from Arlanda to the central station in Stockholm. You can also take the train, Arlanda Express or a Taxi. A Pre-ordered taxi with four bike boxes is possible, cost 80-90 euro from airport to the hotel. For those of you coming in from Skavsta Airport we recommend the bus leaving every 30 min from the airport to the central station in Stockholm. At arrival to the central station there is a short walk to the hotel. Hotel address: Downtown Camper Brunkebergstorg 9 111 51 Stockholm, Sweden 15:00 (3:00 pm). Check in for the race and access to your room starts at Downtown Camper. Athletes will check in at Camper lounge, a conference room in the back of the hotel pasted the check in desk for other guests. (Be aware, the will be 900 other guests checking in this day at the hotel. So, please, pay respect to all people). All your luggage and Bike Boxes will be left outside guarded by NIAR STAFF while you check in. Bring Passport and team clothing (if have any) for pictures.
