MERRY CHRISTMAS DECEMBER 2018 BUCKEYE BREEZE Welcome to winter my Sisters! As we begin to plan for our Holidays in our own homes and Auxiliaries; I thought you might enjoy knowing a bit more about the traditions celebrated in Mexico. As Mexico is a predominately Catholic country, many of their beliefs and practices mirror those here in the U.S. Starting on December 6 th the Christmas Posadas, parades, begin. These re-enact Mary and Joseph s search for shelter in Bethlehem, and the parade ends at a different home each evening, and that home hosts the fiesta with food and fun, often including a candy filled piñata. At this time many homes erect elaborate Nativity scenes. If there are children in the home, it is common to see cartoon characters of super heroes taking a part in the set up. Christmas Eve is Noche Buena; the baby Jesus is placed in the Nativity scene and the family attends midnight mass and celebrates with a meal after. Christmas day is normally a quiet family time and gifts are not traditionally exchanged that day. January 6, Ephiany, is celebrated as Dias De Reyes, or the day of the Three Kings. This is the day children receive gifts from the three Kings who visited the Christ child. It is also customary to eat a round sweet bread in which a miniature baby Jesus is hidden. The person that gets the piece that contains the baby is responsible for hosting the tamale party that is held on Candlemas, which is February 2 nd, which marks the end of the Christmas season in Mexico. My wish for all of you this Holiday season is good health, good spirits and happiness in whatever you choose to celebrate, whether it is Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanzaa. Feliz Navidad y Prospero Ano! Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years to you all! I would like to thank East Central Regional President, Norma Brookover, for honoring me to be the ECR Chairman for Eagle Village. The village is very close to my heart since John has been on the Board for several years and we have visited there often. Additional information follows. There are also Donation Cottages that can be rented by the week for Eagle members for up to 2 weeks per year. Because the Village is building a new Recreation Center, you will see that they are holding a Fund Raiser (information below). Judy Kempton, Lancaster #2120, Eagle Village ECR Chairman A Beautiful Home Away From Home Within beautiful Bradenton, Fla., lies Eagle Village a 26-acre complex featuring 85 living units open to members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles with at least 10 years of continuous membership. The one-bedroom units include central heating and air conditioning and provide a comfortable environment perfect for those carrying on an active Eagle lifestyle. Members are encouraged to support Eagle Village through donations. For a nominal donation, any Eagle member can utilize one of the Village s fully-equipped cottages for up to two weeks per-year when vacancies allow. The Grand Secretary would like to remind all local Secretaries that under Section 85.1 of the Grand Aerie Constitution and Statutes, Secretaries must notify the Grand Secretary forthwith of the expulsion of any member and the cause thereof. It is incredibly important that the Trial Committee Decision Form be submitted to the Grand Secretary s Office as soon as possible to ensure the member records in MMS are appropriately updated to prevent expelled members from attempting to join other Aeries or Auxiliaries.
