New 4-H Year - Time to Enroll! 4-H Club Organizational Leaders can pick up enrollment forms from the Extension Office for the new 2018-2019 4-H Year. Please use the new enrollment forms available from the Extension Office and do not use any old forms you may have left over from previous years. Again this year, re-enrollment forms are available for members and leaders having completed and submitted enrollment forms during the previous 4-H year (2017-2018). The re-enrollment forms are partially completed by computer and are ready for pick up by Organizational 4-H Club Leaders at the Extension Office. 4-H members and leaders need to check re-enrollment forms for accuracy and update projects for the new 4-H year. Enrollment forms for new 4-H members will also be provided to Organizational 4-H Club Leaders. February 1st 4-H Enrollment Deadline The enrollment deadline for all 4-H members, re-enrolling and new members, is February 1, 2019. Please use the current 4-H year (2018-2019) enrollment forms available from the Extension Office and do not use any old forms you may have left over from previous years. 4-H member enrollment forms must be received in the Otero County Extension Office on or before 5:00 pm, February 1, 2019 (office hours are 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm) for 4-H members to be eligible to participate in county, district, and/or state level competitive events. (This is not a postmark date.) All 4-H members must re-enroll every year. The Otero County Extension Service will accept enrollment forms after 5:00 pm on February 1, 2019. However, members enrolling after February 1, 2019 are not eligible to participate in county, district, and/or state level competitive events and will not meet the policy outlined in the Otero County 4-H Council Bylaws for 4-H members in good standing. Members enrolling after February 1, 2019 may participate in non-competitive events at the club, county, district, and/or state level at the discretion of the 4-H club. A 4-H member is not enrolled until the completed enrollment form has been received in the Otero County Extension Office. The enrollment form must be on file in the Otero County Extension Office as mandatory proof of enrollment in the 4-H program. 4-H members may submit their completed enrollment forms to their 4-H Club Organizational Leader or the Otero County Extension Office. 4-H Club Organizational Leaders receiving any completed enrollment forms from 4-H members must submit the forms to the Otero County Extension Office on or before 5:00 pm, February 1, 2019 (office hours are 8:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm) for 4-H members to be eligible to participate in county, district, and/or state level competitive events. 4-H members submitting enrollment forms to their 4-H Club Organizational Leaders may contact the Otero County Extension Office, 437-0231, to confirm that the forms have been received in the Extension Office by the deadline. The 2018-2019 4-H Program Year enrollment deadline of February 1, 2019 is a firm deadline! NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. November 2018 Page 3

Shooting Sports Projects Hunter Education All 4-H members must complete a hunter education class before they are eligible to participate in shooting sports practices and contests. 4-H members participating in practices and contests need to submit a copy of their hunter education card and completed 18-19 4-H release form to the Extension Office if they have not already done so. For additional information regarding hunter education classes or to register for a class go to the NM Game and Fish website: http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/education/hunter_ed/. Archery Practice Schedule Every other Thursday in November starting November 1st at the Otero County Fairgrounds! 6-7 pm Beginners Archery Members 7-8pm Advanced Archery Members Shotgun Practice Schedule November 18th - 1:00 pm at the Roadrunner Trap Club (for Juniors & Seniors) 26th - 9:00 am at the Roadrunner Trap Club (for Juniors & Seniors) Shooting Sports Meeting November 15th at 5:30 pm before Archery Practice. Note: Seniors may participate in rifle, pistol, shotgun and archery. Juniors may participate in rifle, shotgun, and archery. Novices may participate in rifle and archery. New Mexico 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification The next training will be held in Tucumcari, NM February 22-24. The cost of the training is $70.00 and registration will be due in the extension office by December 1st. If you are wanting to attend you must first complete your adult leaders background check and enrollment forms prior to the registration deadline. The policy for maintaining certification, according to our policies and procedures are as follows: II. New Mexico 4-H Shooting Sports Minimum Standards 6. To maintain certification as a 4-H shooting sports Level I or Level II instructor, one must be active two out of three consecutive years. If inactive for two consecutive years, re-certification is required. It is suggested that certified Instructors attend a training workshop every 3-5 years. Page 4 Otero County 4-H News

4-H Project Literature Materials The 2018-2019 4-H Project Literature Materials Short List is now available from the Extension Office and the State 4-H website http://nm4h.nmsu.edu (click on the link titled Projects). This is the list of projects 4-H members may choose from when completing their 2017-2018 Enrollment Form. All indoor 4-H exhibits entered in the 2018 Otero County Fair must follow the standards of the current 4-H projects (4-H projects from the 2016-2017 4-H Project Literature Materials Short List). If you are re-enrolling in a 4-H project this year and have already received the 4-H project materials during a previous 4-H year you may continue to use the 4-H project materials received so long as it has not been revised or replaced. The first 3 (three) printed 4-H project materials are free per 4-H member. Any additional printed 4-H project materials cost $4.00 per 4-H project per 4-H member. Many 4-H project materials are available electronically (CD) at no cost to 4-H members. If you would like a free electronic copy of a 4-H project please write CD next to each 4-H project listed on your 2017-2018 4-H Enrollment Form and if an electronic version is available it will be provided to you at no cost. SAVE THE DATE! Otero County Adult Leaders Meeting: Our new State 4-H Adult Volunteer Leader Coordinator, Cheryl Butterfield will be joining us November 29th, 2018 at 5:30pm at the Otero County Extension Office. Save the Date for Senior Leadership Re-treat 2019! When: January 18-20, 2019 Where: Albuquerque, NM at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Registrations will be due December 7th. $175 registration fee. During the weekend the youth will be involved in hands-on activities while learning about College Degrees, Leadership Skills, Community Service, and Much More! Learn to Quilt! 4-H quilting project sessions will be held on Monday afternoons beginning in November at the Otero County Extension Office. All Novice, Junior, and Senior 4-H members have the opportunity to learn to quilt at the sessions. Sewing machines will be provided for 4-H members to use or 4-H members may bring their own machines to the sessions. There is no fee for participating. However, 4-H members are responsible for purchasing some supplies including a few sewing notions and fabric. A 4-H quilting project orientation meeting will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018, 4:00pm, at the Extension Office. During the meeting 4-H members will be provided with a list of supplies needed for their quilts. During the workshops 4-H members will learn quilting basics and will follow patterns outlined in the 4-H quilting project, Stitchin & Quiltin, to construct their quilts. 4-H members will need to have basic sewing machine skills to be able to participate in the quilting workshops. During the November 19th meeting Kelly will discuss scheduling a basic sewing machine session for any 4-H members needing to learn basic sewing machine skills prior to beginning the sewing of their quilts. Space is limited and pre-registration is required for the quilting workshops. Please pre-register by calling the Extension Office, 437-0231. The dates below have been set for 4-H quilting sessions in November and December. Sewing sessions will continue in January (Monday afternoons) as needed to allow 4-H members to finish their quilts.
