Age continues to influence price with the under 36 month sorts sparking the most interest. Overall the overage cattle met a firm trade and many more would have sold to advantage. DAIRY COWS (101) Max: 146.50p/kg & 1,182 The best heavy Friesian meat cows met a much firmer trade with 30 cows selling in advance of 120p/kg and 10 over the 1000 mark. The best British types peaked at 146.5p/kg from PJ Ross and Holsteins closely following at 136.5p/kg from PH Creed & Son. Manufacturing and steakers also dearer and even the very plain and small cross breds types sold well for their type. BEEF COWS (27) Max: 163.50p/kg & 1,082 The best sorts met an improved trade with strong Limousins to 163.5p/kg from H & JL Parker. Good Blues equally wanted to 157.5p/kg from CM Baber. The few native cows sparked interest to

137.5p/kg and many more well fleshed sorts are wanted to satisfy demand. Other grades, particularly feeding cows, also met a better trade. Quality not as strong as seen in recent sales and the prices achieved reflected this. CALVED HEIFERS TO 1,570 CALVED COWS TO 1,450 The better freshly calved Holstein Friesians generally started around 1500. The best today topping at 1570 from Isgar & Sons with others to 1520 from AF Leighton. The more second quality sorts traded from 1100 to 1250. Overall a shortage of top quality types to test the trade. Included in today s sale was a consignment of late lactation, out of calving pattern, New Zealand style cows PD+ in-calf due May from Simon Martin Farms. Trade was lively with clients from both home and away in attendance. The better types ranged from 1000 to 1310. Shorthorns (2mo) met plenty of interest to 230 from Pipplepen Farms Ltd and young Montbeliarde calves (14 days) to 125 from Booy Farming. SHEEP (639) 10.00AM PRIME HOGGETS (453) SQQ 184.96p/kg Max. 203.00p/kg & 88.50 AUCTIONEER: ANDREW DOBLE A lighter entry sold to a stronger trade throughout and many more would have sold to advantage. The best Continental handy weights met a flying demand and regularly from 188p/kg. A quality run of 48 cross breds from RR Creed & Son peaked at 203p/kg and averaged 188p/kg. Other smart pens to 195p/kg from G & H Passmore and 192p/kg from CJK & RA Yates. A run of 35 from PJ

The best topped at 448 twice from JP Spratt. Other good sorts keenly sought to 365 from AJ Cluett & Son and 345 from SC Eavis. Hereford bulls equally wanted to 400 from Pipplepen Farms. Heifers sold well throughout and the good run of Angus topped at 362 from AK Apsey & Son. The few Hereford heifers on offer peaked at 300 from Pipplepen Farms. More quality named sire sorts, particularly heifers, would sell to advantage.
