ACTIVITY 2 AGILITY - STRAIGHT SLALOM RUN HURLING / FOOTBALL FITNESS EXERCISE This exercise to develop agility and running skills is generally suitable for players of 4-6 years Place a number of cones or poles approximately 1m apart in a straight line The players run in and out between the cones or poles without knocking them Key Points Use the side-step technique Push or drive off the outside leg to dodge around each pole Equipment An inventory of equipment to support ABC exercises is available in the Resources section ACTIVITY 3 AGILITY - ZIG-ZAG SLALOM RUN HURLING / FOOTBALL FITNESS EXERCISE This exercise to develop agility and running skills is generally suitable for players of 4-6 years Place poles or cones approximately 3m apart in a zig-zag formation The players dodge around each of the poles The players should drive off the outside leg when rounding each pole To vary the exercise challenge the players

ACTIVITY 4 STRIKE FROM THE HAND - STRIKING IN PAIRS: HURLING BASIC DRILL ACCURACY This is a basic drill to practice striking from the hand designed to improve accuracy Divide the players into pairs; one ball per pair Mark out a distance 15 2m wide Mark a goal midway between each pair The players strike the ball through the goal to their partner STEP Variation Space - To increase the challenge; Increase the distance between the players or reduce the width of the goal ACTIVITY 5 STRIKE FROM THE HAND - SKILL POINT GAME HURLING CONDITIONED GAME This modified game to develop Striking from the Hand awards points to Players who perform the technique correctly during the game Using cones, mark out a playing area of appropriate size for the number and ability of the Players Divide the Players into equal teams The Players may strike the ball from the hand, and from the ground, and use the hand pass Award 3 points for striking a point from the hand and 2 points for a goal
STEP Variation Task - To ensure plenty of striking, do not permit solo running
ACTIVITY 6 HOOK - CHASE & HOOK II HURLING INTERMEDIATE DRILL This Intermediate Drill to practice the Hook technique challenges the players to react quickly and adapt their position to perform the Hook technique Players pair off, one ball per pair Player A is positioned 2m behind Player B; both players in the Ready Position Player B throws the ball out in a random fashion, following it immediately to attempt to strike it on the ground Player A reacts to the throw and follows to hook Player B Encourage Player A to follow up the tackle and gain possession by jab-lifting the ball Switch roles after each successful hook and lift STEP Variation Equipment - As the Players become more proficient, introduce a smaller ball like the Quick Touch hurling ball
ACTIVITY 7 HOOK - CATCH ME IF YOU CAN HURLING PRACTICE PLAY This Practice Play challenges the defending player to chase down and hook the attacking player Divide the players into a line of defenders and a line of attackers; Position the lines facing towards the sideline from a position in front of the goals; the attackers line nearer the goal Position the ball out from the line of attackers One of each line run on the whistle to challenge for the ball, the attacker arriving first to strike and the defender attempting to hook them STEP Variation Task - Position the ball an even distance from each line and let the contest between the players develop ACTIVITY 8 JAB LIFT - GRID SWAP HURLING FUN ROUTINE This is a grid game designed to increase the speed at which players perform the Jab Lift Divide the players into equal teams Mark out four grids 5m by 5m, with a distance of 5m between each grid; each team is assigned two grids Place the same number of balls in each of the near grids Thefirst player in each team jab lifts each ball in turn and transfers it to the other grid Each player in turn transfers the balls in the opposite direction
The team who completes the drill in the quickest time wins STEP Variation Task - Use two grids and assign one to each team. Each team in turn must transfer the balls to the other team s grid
