15 are to finish their set up by putting their bike in 2 nd gear on front sprockets Straight Lines: are to wheel their bikes to the appropriate area will practice sitting on their bikes in the right position and balancing - They are to ride in a straight line from cone to cone, stopping at the end and using the power position will ride back down the line testing the gears as they go - Try to stop without putting foot down Skidding: - Practice on grass and gravel where possible: Accelerate in a straight line then tightly turn and lean the bike, apply rear brake and plant inside foot on the ground 5 Ridding down an incline and skidding, ridding up an incline: to ride down an incline and apply skidding to ride up the incline applying different gears to work out what works best Single File Ride: to line up and ride single file around the basketball court to meet back at the start - Discuss single file ridding will then ride single file between two lines trying to stay between the lines/cones - Using a circular cone set up students will ride around a circular shape, swap directions Pack up/closure: to put their bikes away - Discuss key skills used today to follow you to the area, wheeling their bikes to practice the power position whilst waiting - Don t lean too far into the turn - Take turns with a partner and watch each other - Start half way up the incline when nervous - Highlight why going first is harder, question why? - Pull off to the side if you are struggling - Ask students with birthdays in certain months to put their bikes away first, stagger - Having trouble balancing the bike - Putting the foot down a lot - Wobbling the bike a lot (not a straight line) - Over/under lean - Using the front break instead of the back - Using the wrong gears - Breaking too quickly on the way down - Unable to keep a straight line behind the person in front - Unable to maintain the speed of the person in front - Wheeling the bike in the wrong way

5 - Fix any safety errors or swap bikes if necessary Slalom: will ride their bikes inbetween the cones Slow Ride: are to ride their bikes as slowly as possible from one side of the quadrangle to the other will then have a slow race, the last person to get to the end without falling over wins Box turn: will drive across the quadrangle into the box, wait for a sign then bike forwards from the box Figure 8: will attempt a curve with their bikes, once they have mastered a tight curve they will move on to the next step will perform a figure 8 ride with their bikes Speed Turn: will ride in a straight line building up speed then reducing speed at the end will then build up speed and try and turn at the last moment - Wait for silence - Use hands up when finished - Keep a narrow zigzag to avoid falling over - Pick up fallen cones - Chose a low gear - Ensure enough space inbetween students that they won t bump each other/collide to line up whilst waiting - Use two cones to guide students around - Ensure figure 8 space is separated by lots of space who are waiting can practice their power position - Ensure students are not close to any walls/corner - Allow room for errors - Having trouble balancing the bike - Wide curves inbetween the cones go too slow and fall over lose control of a straight line - Struggling to stop in the box - Falling over in the turn - Too wide a curve - Too fast/ too slow in the turn - Wide speed turns Signals: - Make a group of 3 following

BIKE ED LESSON PLANS VERSION 2 Ringwood Secondary College Year 8 PE: Bike Ed 2015 Lesson Plan 1 Duration: 75 Date: Tuesday P 4 Learning Objectives: will learn key skills surrounding bike control and movement will work towards straight line, single file ridding on a short trail Equipment/Resources: - Helmet & Bike - Tyre pump - First aid items - Puncture repair kit - Cones X 8 - Quadrangle Time Activity KTP Common Errors 5 Introduction: - Make eye - Not get changed into PE uniform and assemble in the quadrangle contact and maintain assertivenes listening - Introduce self s regarding - Explain same rules apply with respect for Mr Tucker rules and safety Get Bikes out: will uniformly get the bikes out of the bike shed and perform the pre ride safety check - Fix any safety errors or swap bikes if necessary 4 Warm Up: will ride 2 laps around the quadrangle to get the feel of the bike and check it is running correctly - Question the students about the safety check - Hover and assist where necessary - Watch student technique and confidence - Forgetting elements of the safety check e.g. checking the air in the tyres - Wobbly pattern - Peddling too fast for a warm up 2 Explanation of below circuit Circuit

4 Slalom: will ride their bikes inbetween the cones - Keep a narrow zigzag to avoid falling over - Pick up fallen cones - Wide curves inbetween the cones 4 Slow Ride: are to ride their bikes as slowly as possible from one side of the quadrangle to the other will then have a slow race, the last person to get to the end without falling over wins 4 Box turn: will drive across the quadrangle into the box, wait for a sign then bike forwards from the box - Chose a low gear - Ensure enough space inbetween students that they won t bump each other/collide to line up whilst waiting go too slow and fall over lose control of a straight line - Struggling to stop in the box - Hitting the cones with the bike 4 Figure 8: will attempt a figure 8 around the cones, taking note to give way to students 4 Speed Turn: will speed turn through the cones - Use cones to guide students around - Ensure figure 8 space is separated by lots of space who are waiting can practice their power position - Ensure students are not close to any walls/corner - Allow room for errors - Falling over in the turn - Too wide a curve - Too fast/ too slow in the turn - Wide speed turns
