Question: What stage and level do my pony and I need to be at before we return to hacking out on the roads around us? She is usually a very calm animal and pre Parelli I hacked her on the beach in an ordinary headcollar (halter) and leadrope. At what stage/level can we return to competing? She is 9 years old and has done a lot of jumping etc with my children. We both enjoyed one day eventing (at beginner riding club level) and Le Trec last year and would love to get back at it again. We are currently well into the ridden phase of level 1 and hope to complete it soon. Answer: In the end it's entirely up to you! If you have no issues riding out, then don't let the program change that. A lot of people have control issues when they go out the gate so we advise them to not go out until they have more respect, trust and control without using bigger bits. In relation to competing, as long as you don't feel you have to cheat the horse into doing something (again via bits, martingales, etc.) you could go at any time. Jumping is probably one of the easiest to go back to because you won't be demanding vertical flexion (Level 3) before the horse is ready for it. If at any time you feel the horse developing respect problems (running off, overexcited, bucking) you'll know you haven't done enough preparation and so do more of the program before competing again. If you want to be a real zealot, don't compete until after Level 3! In that way you and your horse will have a complete and solid foundation which won't crumble when the pressure is on. Page 2 of 5
Next Week on RFD-TV Pat introduces Pedro to a more natural and creative way to load into a trailer. DISH Channel 231 & DirecTV Channel 379. We apologize for the confusion with Parelli airing on RFDTV. We are currently working on a solution. Please watch enews in February for an update on Parelli's TV Show Schedule in 2008. Parelli Canada Dressage Naturally in Ontario a huge success! Dates booked in Eastern Ontario for '08 Last October, something special happened just outside the town of Fergus, ON... Karen Rohlf, Parelli Dressage Associate Instructor, came to Ontario for the first time ever and blew us all away. The clinic, hosted by 3 Star Instructor, Fawn Anderson and Heather McNeil, was a huge Courtesy Photo success. Sold out months in advance, some of the spectators included Grand Prix riders curious about Parelli, Walter Zettl (Dressage Master and current mentor to Pat & Linda Parelli) and one of his top students, Eddo Hoekstra (Grand Prix Rider who is 'like a son' to Walter). A Wine & Cheese social and Q&A session was held at a gorgeous little Art Gallery in Orton that hosted some beautiful Equine pieces - the perfect setting. Everyone enjoyed the chance to visit with Karen and get all of their questions answered, not to mention the great prizes that were given away! We also got to see what an artist Karen is. A big 'Thank You' to Hans Wiza, Farrier Consulting, for donating the wine for this event. Another big 'Thank You' goes out to the members of the Carrot Stick Club - a local study group who pitched in and volunteered to make sure that the event went off without a hitch. Darlene's chili saved us all when the weather cooled off Page 3 of 5
Parelli United Kingdom UK Courses! a bit! Having Walter attend the clinic was a huge honour. To thank him for attending, Fawn treated Karen, Walter, his guest/driver/'bodyguard' Ron, and clinic coordinators/hosts Heather McNeil and Hans Wiza to a very special gourmet dinner in Fergus. The real treat, though, was the company that was shared and the memories that were made. Do your pleasure rides turn into nightmares? As part of our worldwide Volunteer Team you will share some of those special memories and magic moments before, during and after our event. Everyone who attended the clinic was thrilled by what they learned and were able to take away. Some of the comments we heard were; "This was the best clinic I've ever attended in my life!", "I had no idea how much fun Dressage could be," "This has completely changed how I look at collection," "I always thought Dressage was only for people who rode English, but I can see how you could apply it to anything you'd want to do with your horse." Some of the comments that we've received from people a few months following the clinic are; "It is unreal - my horse had such a bracey and stiff way of going before but now that I've shown him how good it feels to be balanced, he looks for it all the time. Even when I'm riding bridleless!" "I've been playing with the Energy, Relaxation and Balance exercises Karen gave us every day as a part of my warm-up and my horses entire topline has changed." For those of you who were not able to participate last fall, good news! Karen is coming back to Ontario, hosted again by Fawn Anderson, in October of 2008 and this time she will be in the Belleville/Kingston area! The clinic includes a 3-day Introductory Dressage Naturally from Oct 3-5 and a 2-day Advanced Dressage Naturally Oct 6-7. An added bonus - there will be no less than 3 Parelli Instructors also riding in the clinic as students! This event will fill within weeks, so get your applications in immediately. Preference will be given to students who have ridden with Karen in the past (for the Advanced Class) and students with higher levels of horsemanship (Level 2 minimum). Spectators tickets are being pre-sold and will once again be limited. This is not an event that you will want to miss, so register now. Forms and information will be available on Fawn's Calendar at www.fawnanderson.com. Parelli Australia I bought my boy a parelli green ball - he is such a player when he is not a bully!! He was a bit wary at first, but I just had it in a large arena and totally ignored it until he walked over to it and gave it an almighty shove with his nose and then chased it. About three weeks after getting the ball we were playing with it and he gave it his best nudge yet - the ball hit the arena wall and bounced back at him very fast and hard - he double barreled it (thank goodness I was out of the way by this time) and then bucked all the way to a corner - there he stayed and stared at it rolling around in a very slight breeze - he would look at the ball and look at me - we played some other games over poles and barrels etc and he did them all without taking half his focus off that ball - like he was a wind up toy - it was pretty funny, except I felt for him - we are back on track again now but it has taken a lot of time and patience to get back to where we were. It actually took another three sessions just with the ball there before he chose to nudge it again. What I learnt from this experience was how important phases are - I keep telling him the green ball doesn't know phases!! Now I make sure the ball is well away from the sides of the arena!! This is a horse who was on his way to the pal factory and was offered to me - because of him I found parelli and now I have a million dollar playmate - sorry doggies!!
