April 2006 www.corinthians.org Volume 11, Issue 3 US: $2.50 Official Newsletter of the Corinthian Sailing Association of Lake Pontchartrain Seven boats hit the starting line at 10:30 for the make-up races for the Corinthian Winter Series #1 and #3 (#2 was successfully sailed on February 5th). The wind was blowing like stink out of the SSE; in spite of some cloud cover the sailors had a perfect sailing day with lots of wind and little wave action. The Race Committee was John Winters, George Hero, and Nat Belloni. They suffered no pain aboard Bob Maher s luxurious Second Cup. Race #1 was a windward/leeward T-A-E twice around. Race #3 was a 7.5 km drag race E-J-A. Big J had a big jam while raising the foresail for the first race and crossed the line at 6 knots under main alone, but after unfouling the pre-feeder went on to finish Race #1 and take the gun in Race #3. Helmsperson for the day was Elaine Boos, the reigning Women s PHRF champ. Good Intentions sailed with 2 reefs in the main and was the CSA BOTY Winter # 1 & # 3 Sunday, March 12th only crew brave enough to fly a chute. Mark Phelan introduced his new Evelyn 32, Phaedra, with her powder blue hull and burnt orange sails she is an extremely fast ride. Phaedra replaces War Canoe, a victim of Hurricane Katrina. J Rex exhibited some sharp tacking with Don Griglack on the helm. Damn Yankee sailed for the first time in a while, due to Chappy Holbrook s recovery from a back problem. Y-Knot was a glorious sight coming down to the line with all her sails spread wing on wing. Plus One sailed a very competitive race, with Dave Herrara s crack foredeck crew consisting of his fearless teenage son and a buddy. The next BOTY series will start May 7. Check the schedule for upcoming races. Daylight Savings Time is coming soon, along with Wednesday evening racing! E. S. McCoulloch UPCOMING EVENTS Wednesday Night Twilight Series! Corinthian Sailing Association JibSheet April, 2006 Page 2 Commodore s Corner Dear Corinthians: Spring is here and it is unusually welcome considering the fall and winter most of you have had. Our Winter Series is in the book with David Herrera's "Plus One" taking Spinnaker A, Gilbert's "Good Intentions" taking Spinnaker B and Chappy Holbrook's "Damn Yankee" winning Non- Spinnaker. Chappy also won Non-Spinnaker boat of the Leukemia Regatta this past weekend. Wed. night racing has begun for 2006. As you know, we co-sponsor the first five race series with Southern. The first race Southern provided Patrol II and myself, Bill Fields, and mostly George Hero conducted the race. Twenty-two boats reached the starting line. We have some logistics to work out, but I believe a permanent site is close at hand! "Dixie Chick" is close to being ready, Dr. Robson will launch his new boat in a few weeks and others in the various yards will be back this summer. Our reduced fleet size has naturally made it more difficult to fill race committee than in the past. If you don't have a boat, call Don and he can place you on the committee boat. If you do have a boat, I expect Don will be calling you. GOOD LUCK ON THE WATER!! John Winters Commodore Official newsletter of the Corinthian Sailing Association of Lake Pontchartrain. The turnout has been good, with 7 to 9 boats competing. Race Committee is John Winters and others. Many thanks to the Race Committee and to Bob Mayers for the use of his boat Second Cup. Northshore: The Northshore fleet had to cancel their first race five times due to weather. They finally had a beautiful day last Saturday. Eight boats came out for a great race. New Business: The club is searching for an office or at least a place at West End to post notices about races. There was discussion. Old Business: Alan Robson was presented with a custom half-hull of a J-35. The half-hull was inscribed with the name Footloose. Dr. Robson commented that Footloose II is on its way.
