It will also be the third-straight meeting between the two with both programs ranked in the top 20 in the Associated Press poll. The Wildcats enter Saturday s game following a win versus Texas Southern, 85-63, in McKale Center on Wednesday evening. UA s offense posted an impressive field goal percentage of 63.2 percent for the game, which was a new season high by 14.1 percent. The season high was propelled by the Wildcats shooting 72.7 percent from the field in the second half. UA is led in scoring by the freshmen trio of Lauri Markkanen (18.3 ppg), Kobi Simmons (13.0 ppg) and Rawle Alkins (10.9 ppg). Those three freshmen make Arizona one of only two programs in the nation to have its top three scorers all be freshmen averaging at least ten points per game. The other school in this distinction is Auburn. The Wildcats have won six of the seven meetings versus the Zags with five of those games being decided by five points or fewer. The last two games in the series have been neck-and-neck battles. Arizona won 66-63 in overtime in Tucson on Dec. 6, 2014 before downing Gonzaga 68-63 in Spokane last December. UA s five-point win in The Kennel last season came after erasing a tenpoint halftime deficit. UA has been ranked in the AP Top 25 in six of its seven all-time meetings against Gonzaga. Those rankings include four top-five rankings with an average ranking of 14th in the nation. Entering the weekend, Lauri Markkanen is the only player in the Pac-12 to rank in the top 15 of the conference in scoring (18.3 ppg 4th), field goal percentage (.541 13th), three-point field goal percentage (.469 6th) and free throw percentage (.892 4th). Saturday s game will be a meeting of two of the winningest teams in the nation over the last threeplus seasons. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, Gonzaga has won 99 games and Arizona has tallied 98 victories. The two programs trail only Villanova (104 wins) and Kentucky (101 wins) as the winningest programs over three and a half seasons. All seven victories have been neck-and-neck affairs as Arizona s average margin of victory in those seven wins is 3.0 points. LOOKING BACK AT NOVEMBER Arizona s win over Texas Southern wrapped up another successful month of November in Tucson. With a mark of 6-1, UA is now 42-7 (.857) in the month of November under head coach Sean Miller (2009 to present). BOUNCING BACK AGAINST GONZAGA Senior Kadeem Allen will look for a bounce back performance his second time facing the Zags. He enters Saturday s game versus Gonzaga after one of the best games of his career against Texas Southern with 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Allen was held scoreless in The Kennel last season, missing on all seven shots from the field in 19 minutes. He did grab five rebounds and record two assists in last year s meeting in Spokane. ROAD WARRIORS In addition to holding one of the highest home court winning percentages in the nation, Arizona has shown a knack for continuing its winning ways outside of Tucson. Since Sean Miller s arrival prior to the 2009-10 season, the Wildcats have posted a record of 82-50 (.621) away from McKale Center. That mark improves to 35-19 (.648) at neutral site locations. UA s records in the last three season are 42-18 (.700) outside of Tucson and 20-7 (.740) in neutral sites. DOUBLE FIGURE SCORING AND LAURI MARKKANEN Lauri Markkanen has opened his collegiate career by leading the Wildcats in scoring in all but one of their seven games this season. The 7-footer from Finland has scored in double figures in each of his first seven games as a freshman. Since 1975, only three other Wildcats have opened their freshman seasons with longer streaks. Here s a closer look at how that opening streak compares to other Arizona freshmen. *Arizona discontinued its junior varsity team following the 1976-77 season Player Season # of double-digit scoring games to open Michael Wright 1998-99 10 Jerryd Bayless 2007-08 9 Aaron Gordon 2013-14 8 Chase Budinger 2006-07 7 Lauri Markkanen 2016-17 7 Ben Davis 1994-95 6 Mike Bibby 1996-97 5 Frank Smith 1979-80 5 Gilbert Arenas 1999-00 4 PAC-12 STANDINGS (as of Dec. 2) Rank Team Pac-12 Overall 1. CONTINUED OFFENSIVE COHESION IN MILLER ERA KenPom s adjusted offensive efficiency metric measures points scored per 100 possessions with adjustments for the quality of opposing defenses, the site of each game, and when each game was played (recent games get more weight). Arizona ended the season ranked 20th in the nation in KenPom s adjusted offensive efficiency at 114.7. Here s how the 2016-17 offense has started ths season off in this metric compared to Sean Miller s previous Arizona teams. The 7-footer from Finland has already been named to a trio of prestigious national award watch lists: *Karl Malone Award (nation s top power forward): 1 of 20 players on list *Naismith Trophy (national player of the year): 1 of 50 players on list *John R. Wooden Award (national player of the year): 1 of 50 players on list WILDCATS CONTINUE TO BUILD ON RANKINGS STREAK The Wildcats have been ranked in 82-consecutive AP polls and 85-straight coaches polls. The 82-consecutive weeks in the AP poll is currently the second-longest streak in the nation behind Kansas. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Arizona has spent 60 weeks ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll during that span. UA took over the No. 1 ranking in the AP poll on Dec. 9, 2013, marking its first top ranking since 2003 and the first time a Pac-12 team had garnered the top spot since 2006. The Wildcats held the top spot for a program-record eight straight weeks. Arizona was one of just 11 programs in the nation to appear in all 20 Associated Press polls in 2012-13, and one of just eight programs nationally to do so in 2013-14. UA was the only program in the nation to be ranked in the top 10 in every AP poll in the 2013-14 and the 2014-15 seasons. Consecutive weeks in AP poll (as of Nov. 28) 1st Kansas 146 weeks 2nd Arizona 82 weeks 3rd Iowa State 60 weeks RISTIC S CAREER NIGHT VERSUS SACRED HEART Dusan Ristic posted a career night in his team s win over SHU. The junior center finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals while shooting 60.0 percent from the field. The 15 rebounds were a new career high, eclipsing his 11 rebounds over Pacific in the 2015-16 season opener. Friday night s performance was also the first doubledouble of his college career. MILLER AND COMPANY INK FOUR DECORATED FUTURE WILDCATS Head coach Sean Miller and the Arizona Basketball program have announced the addition of four future Wildcats for the 2017 recruiting class. Deandre Ayton (Phoenix, Ariz.), Alex Barcello (Phoenix, Ariz.), Ira Lee (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Brandon Randolph (Yonkers, N.Y.) give Arizona another top recruiting class in the nation. Deandre Ayton 7 0 250 lbs. Center Phoenix, Ariz. Coach Sean Miller on Ayton: I m not going to sugarcoat it, Deandre is one of these once in a generation types of players. He s big, seven feet (tall). The fact that he hasn t lifted weights is astonishing to me because when you shake his hand, he has a physical presence as a young person that you don t often times see. One thing I m really excited for sure is to plug him into our strength and conditioning program, which is a real part of our program. The thing that impresses me about Deandre as a player is that he is really smart. He has the know-how to play with four other players that not a lot of big guys have. He can pass, he can step away from the basket and dribble the ball, and he s a really skilled player. *Widely considered to be the top prospect in the nation in the 2017 recruiting class *Became the first overall No. 1 recruit to commit to a Pac-12 school since 2007 *Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List as top prep player in the nation. Alex Barcello 6 2 180 lbs. Guard Phoenix, Ariz. Coach Miller on Barcello: Alex is a point guard from Phoenix and an incredible student. He has the makings to be an incredible leader, and has some characteristics of T.J. McConnell that we ve grown to love. I think that he has a fire inside of him, a toughness, and a love of the game that at that position you love to have. We are really elated to have him. Alex is not small, he s 6-1, 6-2 and has a good build to him. Another thing we love about Alex, in addition to his playmaking skills, is that he can really shoot the three Being from Phoenix is nice for his family. He has already won several state championships, and winning is a real part of his background. *ESPN Top 100 member and rated No. 2 player in Arizona behind Deandre Ayton *Helped guide Corona del Sol to back-to-back state championships *2014 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year Ira Lee 6 8 220 lbs. Forward Los Angeles, Calif. Coach Miller on Lee: Ira Lee is the one we ve probably been with the longest in terms of our recruiting efforts. We identified Ira a long time ago and offered him a scholarship early on in his high school career. He s a guy with a high motor, plays the game with tremendous energy, and he s involved in so many different plays on both offense and defense. From a defensive perspective he has a chance to be great. Ira has the type of size and athleticism, but mostly the mindset of toughness that we really love. He s also a versatile player where he can play more than one position. He gives us versatility in that regard because you can play him in many different combinations, he s not a one position type player. *Member of ESPN Top 100 and rated in top ten nationally at his position *Rated as a top ten power forward by Scout.com *Son of Zeph Lee, former running back and defensive back with the Los Angeles Raiders Brandon Randolph 6 6 185 lbs. Guard Yonkers, N.Y. Coach Miller on Randolph: Brandon, like Alex (Barcello), is an exceptional shooter. Not a small two guard, he s around 6 5, 6 6. When you have that type of frame, strength and conditioning can give you additional skills that you may not have right now. He s got a great frame, but where his body will go over the next couple of years, it s exciting to think about. He s more than just a shooter, he s a basketball player, really knows how to pass the ball. He plays on one of the best high school teams in the country, and that winning environment on both the travel circuit as well as a highly completive high school. He s a high-character kid, tremendous student and comes from a great family. *Rated in ESPN Top 100 nationally and as a top five in-state prospect *Ranked as a top ten shooting guard nationally by Scout.com *Averaged 16 points per game in Nike EYBL summer circuit with 39 percent shooting from deep

No Wildcat has played in more NBA games than Terry and Jefferson. Their combined 2,367 NBA games played entering this season were more than the entire Philadelphia 76ers roster on opening day (2,242). KOBI SIMMONS DEBUT Freshman Kobi Simmons led Arizona in scoring versus Michigan State with 18 points. He accounted for 15 of his team s 34 first-half points. His 18 points were the most by a UA freshman in his NCAA debut since Jerryd Bayless tallied 18 points in the 2007-08 season opener. RAY SMITH INJURY UPDATE University of Arizona forward Ray Smith has suffered a knee injury and will miss the 2016-17 season. Smith injured the ACL in his right knee as well as other ligament and meniscal damage in Tuesday s exhibition. He will have surgery in the upcoming month and begin the rehabilitation process. Smith later announced he would step away from the game after three ACL injuries in less than three years. Below is Head Coach Sean Miller s official statement. About a year ago I began my statement regarding Ray Smith s season-ending injury by saying, Ray Smith is one of the most talented young players that has ever entered our program. Unfortunately, I begin this year s statement by reiterating the special talent that Ray has on the basketball court and once again addressing a season-ending knee injury. In the 25 years I have been a college basketball coach, I have never felt as helpless as I did when I saw him go down on Tuesday night. No 19-year-old kid should have to experience three season-ending injuries in a 30-month period of time. I have watched Ray work with our strength and conditioning coach tirelessly for two years. I have seen him in our training room around the clock, doing everything he can to play the game he loves. To witness his extraordinary efforts and see this happen to him once again is beyond disheartening. Ray is surrounded by a community that loves Arizona Basketball, current and former teammates that look at him as a brother, and a coaching staff and family that is beyond supportive and forever with him. Although the mountain that Ray is climbing continues to change, my belief in him to be a resounding success in life has never been stronger. His intelligence, charisma and sheer will position him to be special in all that he does. I certainly look forward to helping him, as part of our basketball family, reach all of the goals that he sets out to achieve. REPLACING THE 2016 SENIOR CLASS The 2016-17 Arizona Wildcats return six scholarship players from a season ago and will look to replace the numbers of the 2016 senior class of Kaleb Tarczewski, Gabe York, Ryan Anderson and Mark Tollefsen. The foursome combined to record more than 50 percent of Arizona s points, rebounds, blocks and made three-point field goals a year ago. Sean Miller era Cats have now inked $129 million in NBA contracts since his arrival in Tucson prior to the 2009-10 season. Arizona also boasts six former players who have each earned in excess of $100 million in NBA deals, including Gilbert Arenas, Mike Bibby, Andre Iguodala, Richard Jefferson, Damon Stoudamire and Jason Terry. Arizona products have signed for over $58 million in NBA contracts for the 2016-17 season alone. ANOTHER JERSEY GOES INTO THE MCKALE RAFTERS Miles Simon, one of the most decorated players in Arizona s rich basketball history, will have his number 34 uniform recognized at the 2016 McDonald s Red-Blue Game on Friday, Oct. 14. Simon was the Most Outstanding Player of the 1997 NCAA Tournament that saw UA claim a national championship. He was the leading scorer for the entire tournament, including 30 points in the overtime win over Kentucky in the championship game. The Southern California native ended his career in the top 10 in program history in scoring, assists, made free throws and made three-point field goals. He tallied 20 points or more in a game an impressive 34 times in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Simon is still one of just 13 Wildcats to score over 1,600 points in a career while currently still ranking in the top 10 in assists, free throws made and made three-point field goals. The Arizona guard was a first-team All-American as a senior in 1997-98 after earning All-Pac-10 honors in each of his final three seasons with the Wildcats. Simon is Arizona s all-time career leading scorer in NCAA Tournament history and is one of four Wildcats to score 1,600 points and dish out 400 assists in a career, joining Sean Elliott, Damon Stoudamire and Jason Gardner.
