The Panthers split four home matches last week, including a 2-1 mark at the Milwaukee Invitational. Four-set wins over Akron and Southern Mississippi were bookended by losses to Northern Illinois and Marquette. Rachel Neuberger and Morgan Potter earned spots on the Milwaukee Invite All-Tourney team. Neuberger leads the league with a.374 hitting percentage. Milwaukee was picked to win the 2011 Horizon League title in a poll of the league s coaches. UWM is looking for its eighth regular season title in the last nine years. The Panthers return five of their seven starters, including Horizon League Player of the Year Kerri Schuh and League Newcomer of the Year and Region Freshmen of the Year Rachel Neuberger. Week #4 The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women s volleyball team faces another busy week, heading to Western Michigan for a non-league match Tuesday before opening Horizon League play with contests against Green Bay and Loyola this weekend. Scouting Notebook Milwaukee has split its first two matches of the season against MAC teams, losing to Northern Illinois before knocking off Akron... the Panthers have never beaten Western Michigan... UWM is 13-2 in its last 15 Horizon League openers... the Panthers have won six in a row over Green Bay... UWM has also won 15 of its last 16 and 35 of its last 38 over the Phoenix... Milwaukee has won 10 in a row over Loyola... prior to this UWM run, the teams had split their last 10 matches... Susie Johnson is 9-0 against Loyola and 8-1 vs. Green Bay. Picked To Win UWM opens Horizon League play as both the defending regular season champion and the pick to defend its crown. The league s coaches put Milwaukee first in their annual preseason poll, with the Panthers claiming four first-place votes and finished with 60 points in the poll. UWM outdistanced Cleveland State (52), Butler (51) and Valparaiso (51). The league continues to be more competitive each year, with four teams finishing with at least 20 wins a season ago. Winning... Winning... Winning Milwaukee s stellar 2010 season added to an incredible legacy of success for Panther volleyball. UWM won 20 matches, the 12th 20-win season in the last 14 years. In league play, Milwaukee has won at least 10 league matches for 14-straight seasons and has gone through the league slate with just one loss eight times. Since the league expanded to a 16-match schedule in 2007, UWM has had a pair of 15-win seasons and two seasons of 13 wins. UWM is 171-25 in league matches over the last 14 seasons. Always Happy To Be Home The Panthers have had great success on their homecourt in league play and are aiming to make sure 2011 is no different. UWM went 10-4 overall and 7-1 in league Volleyball play at home last season. The loss to Butler Oct. 10 was just the second regular season league home loss for the Panthers in their last 52 matches. At one point, UWM had a 37-match home regular season league winning streak and the Panthers have lost just seven regular season league home contests since 1997. Under Susie Johnson, UWM is 31-4 against league teams and 43-13 at home overall. Recapping Last Week UWM split its four matches last week, knocking off Akron and Southern Mississippi while falling to Northern Illinois and Marquette. The week started with a tight match against the Huskies, as NIU swept UWM but all three sets were decided by two points and went beyond 25. Then, Milwaukee bounced back nicely with fourset wins over the Zips and Eagles to open the Milwaukee Invitational. The weekend ended on a down note, though, as Marquette hit.333 to capture a three-set win. Very Nice From Neuberger Sophomore Rachel Neuberger has been superb over the first three weeks of the season. This past week, Neuberger led the team with 50 kills and hit a stellar.434. She was also tied for the team lead with 15 blocks. Those efforts earned her a spot on the Milwaukee Invitational All-Tournament Team, the second-straight week where she was recognized following tournament play. On the season, Neuberger leads the league with a.374 hitting clip and is second on the team at 2.74 kills per set. Defensively, she shares the team lead in blocks with Kerri Schuh. Last year, Neuberger was the Horizon League Player of the Year and the AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year. Super Schuh Senior Kerri Schuh seems to have picked up where she left off last season. The reigning Horizon League Player of the Year has already won League Offensive Player of the Week honors twice this season. She also earned all-tournament honors at Arizona State and then was the MVP of the Drake Invitational. At Drake, Schuh averaged 4.00 kills, 3.08 digs and 0.75 blocks per set. On the season, Schuh is fourth in the league in kills and third in digs. Plus, she played the 100th match of her career over the weekend and heads into this Weekly Notebook Sept. 12, 2011 Page 2 11 League Championships 2011 League Standings League Overall Milwaukee 0-0 7-3 UIC 0-0 6-3 Valparaiso 0-0 7-4 Cleveland State 0-0 7-4 Butler 0-0 4-7 Loyola 0-0 3-5 Green Bay 0-0 3-7 Wright State 0-0 1-8 Youngstown State 0-0 1-10 Schedule/Results Tues. week with 993 career kills. Schuh also earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors a year ago. More From The Notebook UWM s championship at the Drake Invitational marked the first in-season tournament title by the Panthers since the 2008 season. That year, Milwaukee won the Bradley Invitational... Kerri Schuh s 24 kills against IPFW came one match after Elizabeth Egerer had 23 vs. Drake. The last time the Panthers had two different players pass 20 kills in back-to-back matches was at the tail-end of the 2009 season, when Schuh had 22 against Butler on Nov. 14 and Jena Berg had 21 vs. Green Bay on Nov. 20... UWM and Youngstown State are the only two teams in the league to have two different players collect 20+ kills in a match so far this season... Becky Peters was the last Panther to have as many as 24 kills in a single match, doing it against Oregon State in 2008... Elizabeth Egerer has missed two games during the early season while recovering from an injury... Mackenzie Millis has earned a spot in the regular rotation. She has a pair of 10-kill outings, a nine-block effort and a match where she collected 10 digs... in addition to regular appearances by freshmen Kayla Price and Taylor Golabowski, Hannah Blanchard and Julie Kolinske have also been earning some playing time. Blanchard had nine kills against IPFW and Kolinske had three kills and three blocks off the bench against Marquette... the Panthers drew a pair of big crowds during the first week of their home schedule. Milwaukee drew 916 fans against Northern Illinois and 1,021 against Marquette... in addition to the all-tournament performances by Schuh and Rachel Neuberger, Kayla Price was an all-tournament honoree at Arizona State and Morgan Potter was on the all-tournament at Drake and for the Milwaukee Invitational... as a team, UWM leads the league in kills and assists while standing second in digs, blocks and opponent hitting percentage. Panther Primer UWM is using a six-member senior class and a talented group of newcomers in its quest for its eighth Horizon League regular season title in the last nine years. In addition to the six seniors - a group that includes Horizon League Player of the Year and AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Kerri Schuh - the Panthers also return starters Elizabeth Egerer and Rachel Neuberger. Neuberger was the league and region freshman of the year a season ago, while Egerer earned a spot in the league s all-newcomer team. Senior Salute Milwaukee has no shortage of veteran leadership this season, with six seniors on the roster. Kerri Schuh is actually in her fifth season with the Panthers after redshirting following an early-season injury as a freshman in 2007. Schuh has played in 101 matches in her career and starts this week with 993 kills and 544 digs. Morgan Potter started all of last season at libero and now has 863 career digs. Her 514 digs a season ago marked the fourth-most in a single season in school history. Mary Beth O Brien has now played in 82 matches and has 423 kills, while Samantha Trawitzke has played in 65 matches, collecting 1,412 assists and 434 digs. Melissa Jansen and Mackenzie Millis round out the senior class. Jansen has played in 73 matches in her career while Millis has made 40 appearances. Susie Johnson Fifth Season As Head Coach 92-39 14th Season At UWM It hasn t taken long for Susie Johnson to settle into her role as the head coach for the UWM volleyball program. Johnson was named head coach in May of 2007 after 10 years as an assistant and associate head coach in Milwaukee. All she has done since is lead UWM to 85 wins, three regular season titles, a pair of league tournament crowns and two NCAA Tournament berths. This past season, she led the Panthers to a 15-1 league mark and an 11-match winning streak. In fact, UWM started the season 3-7 against a difficult non-league schedule but then won 17 of 19 matches after that, capturing the league crown. In 2009, she directed her team to another 11-match winning streak. The first eight wins helped her team move from eighth to third in the league standings before three more wins in the league tournament helped her squad to the title and an eighth NCAA Tournament berth. In her time as both a head coach and an assistant, Johnson has put the Panthers in great position for success. In 2008, Johnson directed a squad that included 12 freshmen and sophomores to the top of the league standings. UWM also beat then-#18 Iowa State during non-league play and claimed the Horizon League Tournament title and automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Johnson also earned league coach of the year recognition for the second-straight time. During her first season as head coach, Johnson led the Panthers to a school-record 26 wins and a fifth-straight Horizon League regular season title. UWM also put together winning streaks of 14 and 12 matches. UWM has won either the regular season or tournament championship in league play in all 14 seasons Johnson has been on the staff at UWM, while eight of the last 14 Panther squads have qualified for Success With Susie 85 Wins In Four Years As Head Coach 171-25 League Record In 14 UWM Seasons 8 Panther NCAA Tournament Berths 12 20-Win Seasons At UWM 11 UWM Regular Season League Titles 3 League Coach Of The Year Honors For additional stats and info on head coach Susie Johnson, visit Weekly Notebook Sept. 12, 2011 Page 5 the NCAA Tournament. In fact, UWM has staked its claim to clearly being the top volleyball program in the Horizon League. The Panthers have won a league-record six league tournament titles while Milwaukee has gone 184-50 in Horizon League play since joining the conference (then the MCC) in 1994. UWM s.786 league winning percentage is easily the league s best, with Valparaiso s.672 the next one in line. In her now 14 seasons in Milwaukee, UWM has compiled a 311-106 overall record. That number includes a 171-25 mark in Horizon League play and a 144-24 record in home matches. Plus, the Panthers have won 90 of their 97 home league matches with Johnson on the bench. Johnson s efforts on the recruiting trail have led to six League Newcomers of the Year during her tenure, including Rachel Neuberger winning the award this past season. Plus, 17 Panther players have earned a spot on the league s all-newcomer team in the last 14 years. Panther players have then consistently developed into the best players in the Horizon League. In her 14 seasons in Milwaukee, Johnson has coached eight League Players of the Year, with Kerri Schuh winning the award this season. In all, players have earned all-league honors 40 times under Johnson and the recognition for Panther players has extended far beyond the Horizon League, though. With Johnson s assistance, UWM players have earned AVCA All-America honors seven times and AVCA All-Region honors 18 times. Plus, two Panthers have earned AVCA Region Freshman of the Year accolades, with Rachel Neuberger claiming the honor this past season. Johnson s playing background is at setter, where she earned All-Big Sky and All- Northwest Region honors at Idaho State. She was also a two-time Academic All-Big Sky honoree and has helped direct the Panthers to great success in the classroom, with two Academic All-Americans and a team GPA above 3.3.
