2008 Pacific-10 Women s Soccer - November 18, 2008 3 AROUND THE LEAGUE ARIZONA (9-11-0): The Wildcats finished out the Pac-10 season falling in close matches to Washington and Washington State on the road. SR GK Chelsea McIntyre finished the season with 100 saves, good for first place in the Conference. McIntyre recorded a Pac-10 season-high 15 saves against Stanford, most of any goalie in the Conference. ARIZONA STATE (8-8-4): The Sun Devils had been muddled by injuries all season. Battling through the pain, JR GK Brianna Silvestri tied for the lead in the Pac-10 in saves per game during Conference play with six. Silvestri was named a Pac-10 and NSCAA Player of the Week during the season. CALIFORNIA (10-9-1): Earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Cal Bears made their fifth-straight post-season appearance and their 10th in the last 11 years. In the Bears game against Florida, Cal struck first with FR F Natasha Richardson going oneon-one with the Florida goalkeeper. Although the Bears out shot the Gators, 14-8, Cal fell to Florida 1-2. Berkeley s appearance marked the second time head coach Neil McGuire has made the post season with California. Prior to arriving in Berkeley, McGuire helmed rebuilding efforts at Mississippi State and Texas Tech. OREGON (9-9-2): Oregon finished up the Pac-10 season with a stellar effort in the net by FR GK Cody Miles. Despite falling to No. 2 UCLA, Miles was dubbed as having one of the best games of her career, thwarting scoring efforts from olympians Lauren Cheney and Kara Lang. Miles tallied eight saves in the contest. OREGON STATE (6-11-2): The Beavers almost put a wrench in UCLA s Pac-10 title winning victory at the end of the season, coming back to force double overtime against the Bruins. SO MF Courtney Wetzel scored her first goal of the season on a free kick. Wetzel s goal was the fourth goal UCLA had allowed all year. STANFORD (20-1-1): The Cardinal earned an at-large bid and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, marking the 11th straight NCAA appearance for Stanford. The Cardinal continues to have one of the most high-powered offenses in the nation, ranking fifth overall with 3.15 goals per game. Stanford added to its average with an offensive onslaught on Kansas. Five different Cardinal players scored a goal in the game, making it their fifth five-goal match of the season. Stanford next faces Rutgers, Friday, in the third-round of post-season play. UCLA (20-0-2): For the third time in school history, the Bruins earned one of the four No. 1 seeds in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Bruins faced a close contest with San Diego in the second-round, winning on a USD own-goal with 13 minutes left in regulation. UCLA is the only team in the nation to have played in the last five NCAA College Cups. The Bruins clinched their sixth straight Pac-10 title and finished the season undefeated for the first time in school history. USC (16-4-2): After beating the University of Boston and winning the shoot-out against BYU, USC heads to the Sweet 16 to face Conference and inner-city rival UCLA, Saturday. Last season, the Trojans upset UCLA in the semifinals en route to a school-first and a Conference-first National Title. USC lost 2-1 earlier this season against UCLA at the LA Coliseum, where the Trojans hosted a crowd of 7,000-plus fans. WASHINGTON (15-6-1): Following a three-year absence from the Tournament, Washington earned one of the 34 at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. In the Huskies first round match-up against LSU, Washington out shot the Tigers 20-11 and put the game away 3-2 in overtime. In UW s loss to Texas A&M in its second game, Washington s only score of the match came on a Texas A&M own goal. The Huskies finish the season with a 15-6-1 record, the third-most wins in school history. WASHINGTON STATE (10-6-5): The Cougars made their first post-season appearance in six years, earning an at-large birth to the NCAA Tournament. WSU made just its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and first appearance for head coach Matt Potter. In the Cougars first round game against Texas, JR MF Carly Dobratz took four of the teams six shots in the game. Despite the offensive effort, Washington State fell to the Longhorns, 0-1. DiMartino, a native of Massapequa, N.Y., is the fifth Pac-10 Player of the Year recipient from UCLA all-time. Playing in 91 games in her four-year career at UCLA, DiMartino has been a part of a Pac-10 title team each season she competed. En route to UCLA s sixth-straight Pac-10 Championship, DiMartino scored the game-winning goal against the Stanford Cardinal, which would eventually clinch the title once again for the Bruins. In a scoreless tie with fellow unbeaten Stanford, DiMartino took her only shot of the game, 25 yards out and scored UCLA s go ahead goal with 13 minutes left in regulation. I am extremely proud of Tina for achieving this award, said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. It is rare that a midfielder gets recognized in this way, and I believe it s a testament to Tina s ability and significance on this team. With her six assists this season, DiMartino moves into second-place, behind Iris Mora (2002-05), on UCLA s all-time career assist leaders, with 30. DiMartino also moved into the top-10 on UCLA s career scoring list. I am thrilled that my peers were able to recognize that and vote her this year s Pac-10 Player of the Year, added Ellis.
