Masters 15 th /16 th Speaking of security I noticed that a lot more people are paying attention March Umina Beach to closing the doors after getting personal or patrol gear out of the shed or when leaving the club so thanks also for that as it all helps in keeping our gear and equipment safe. Apart from our ongoing construction work we have now have a few weeks of normal patrols until Surfest begins later in February after that the committee team will then be starting to put things in place for end of season and presentation night, on that note if anyone has any ideas on what they think would be a suitable 100% award Dave Hoar would like to hear from you.

Club Captain s Update By Dave Hoar Hello everyone, We hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year, many thanks to the members who were able to volunteer on Christmas Day and to the patrols that looked after the beach on New Years Day. Most Patrol Captains contact their patrols in advance of their allocated patrol, usually with an AM/PM split. If you could confirm your availability with your Patrol Captain that would be fantastic. If you need to swap (or are unavailable) it would be really helpful if you could swap with a member who has similar qualifications - if you are an IRB Driver or Crew this is especially important so that we have an operational IRB on the beach, likewise for members with Advanced Resuscitation and Spinal qualifications. To swap contact your Patrol Captain, another member of your patrol or email Emma at mslsc.secretary@gmail.com so that it can be put into the weekly "What's on". Re patrol member qualifications the training team have some great courses coming up - with Advanced Resuscitation Techniques scheduled for the nights of Mon 27 and Tue 28 - and Spinal Management on Sunday February 2. Next month Surfest is on which will impact our patrols on the beach - we'll provide an update in next months newsletter on what the agreed arrangements are with the Surfest organisers. See you on the beach, Dave/Bruce Upcoming Courses Bronze/SRC - commences Wednesday 29 at 6pm sharp with an Information and Orientation night (bring your swimmers, towel and goggles for a pool swim) Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ARTC) - Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 5.30-9pm BYO dinner Spinal Management Course - Sunday February 2 from 9am-3.30pm BYO lunch To apply, enquire or pick up awards contact Charlie on 0417 024469 robbugbird@live.com or Dave on 0403 925799 or davidhoar@y7mail.com

WELL DONE Photo courtesy Newcastle Herald, photo by Ryan Osland Congratulations to Merewether SLSC on winning the SLSNSW Rescue of the Month award for November 2013. As the NSW winner the club was awarded a $400 SLSA Surf Store credit as well as binoculars for patrol use. A plaque and a framed citation have also been created which will be issued by the branch at their annual Awards of Excellence night. This month featured two State winners with ALS Port Stephens also being acknowledged for Rescue of the Month. IRB Captain s Update by Nathan Wright Expressions of interest are now being taken for next IRB drivers and crewman course. Function Room Recently there was a wedding on the beach in front of Surfhouse. We hired our chairs to the couple for their beach wedding. A big thank you to Charlie for helping with the transport of the chairs to and from the beach which was extremely difficult due to the construction at the time! Timebanking is a community program that allows the voluntary exchange of services between members. It s as simple as give an hour, receive an hour: by giving one hour to helping another member, you earn one hour of time credits which can be used to receive services that are of personal value such as dog walking, ironing, community gardening, massage, language tuition, painting, administrative assistance... you're only restricted by your imagination. Everyone can be part of Timebanking as everyone has something to give. Once you become a Timebanking member, you are able to search through all the offers of assistance and requests for assistance made by other members. If you see someone's offer or request that you could complete, or that you would find useful, you simply contact that person to arrange the completion of the service. More information, contact Michael Spillane: mas213521@hotmail.com

It s Duck Season Ducks for Dollars is now in full swing as a major fundraiser for our club. Until Saturday 25 2014, our club is hoping to raise over $12 000 from this annual event. $12 000 is a very achievable target, given that a couple of seasons ago we managed to raise over $14 000. At the time of writing, we have raised $6640. Thank you to those members who have contributed to this total. Thank you also to the Beach Hotel who, as always, has played a significant part in our club s fundraising effort by allowing us to sell duck tickets on their premises. Our target of achieving $12 000 will be all the more likely if we have as many members as possible assist with the selling of duck tickets. With this in mind, please find attached a roster for the selling of tickets at the Beach Hotel. IF YOU HAVE TICKETS PLEASE RETURN THEM BY SUNDAY 19 TH JANUARY. HELEN, GLENIS OR RACHEL WILL BE AT THE CLUB THIS SUNDAY MORNING DURING NIPPERS. The roster is based around patrols and patrol days. Patrol 3 has proven that it is easy enough to do a patrol then duck off to the pub afterwards to make a lot of money for our club.patrons are always keen to buy tickets for this cause. Please note that all patrols have also been given days at the pub on non-patrol days. If you can make it, that would be great. However, anytime that you can make it to the pub to sell duck tickets is appreciated. A couple of things to remember Books of duck tickets can be found above the main bar (also pens). Money and ticket stubs can be left in the pub s safe in the marked large envelope (please see bar staff). Please mark the tickets that you have sold with your patrol number. The patrol that sells the most ducks will win $250.00. Friday sellers should go to the pub around lunchtime so as to not interfere with Friday night raffles. Saturday and Sunday are particularly good days for selling at the pub. Wednesday nights are also a good time as the pub holds a trivia competition from around 8:00pm. Patrol captains if possible, please try to encourage and organise your patrol members to make it to the pub to sell some duck tickets. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me on 0418 532615 or phicooke@bigpond.net.au Thank you in advance for your support. Good luck. Phil Cooke Chief Duck
