Playoff Game #6, Governors Cup Final Game #2 - Wednesday, September 10th - McCoy Stadium - 7:05 p.m. Durham Bulls (75-69, 3-2) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox (79-65, 4-0) - Pawtucket Leads Series 1-0 RHP Alex Colome (7-6, 3.77; 0-1, 7.20) vs. LHP Brian Johnson (NR; 10-2, 1.75 in AA) Tonight s Game The South Division champion and defending Governors Cup champion Durham Bulls take on the Wild Card winner Pawtucket Red Sox in Game Two of the Best-of-Five Governors Cup Final, a rematch of the 2013 Final which Durham won 3-1. Durham - which won the South Division by 9.0 games over Norfolk - is seeking back-to-back Governors Cup titles, and the franchise s fifth in the last 13 seasons. Pawtucket - the 2012 Governors Cup champion - is playing in its third straight Governors Cup Final, and is seeking its fourth crown since joining the IL in 1973 ( 73, 84, 12). The rematch is only the sixth time since 1933 the same two teams will meet in the Governors Cup Final as the year before, and the first time since 2008-09 when Scranton/WB and Durham met. About Last Night Durham dropped the series opener 3-2 to Pawtucket, stranding five runners on base in the last two innings. The PawSox scored a single run in each of the first three innings, while OF Mikie Mahtook s two-out, two-run single in the third provided the only offense for the Bulls in the contest. RHP Doug Mathis and RHP Cory Burns combined for five innings of shutout relief. When Trailing 1-0 In the Charlie Montoyo era (2007-present), Durham is 3-3 in playoff series in which they have trailed 1-0. The 2014 Governors Cup Final marks the third straight postseason series Durham has trailed 1-0 dating back to the 2013 Governors Cup Final. If You Mess With The BULLS Pen, You re Gonna Get The Horns RHPs Doug Mathis and Cory Burns combined for five scoreless relief innings last night, allowing just one hit and one walk. After allowing five earned runs in three innings in Game One of the First Round, Durham s bullpen has allowed one run on seven hits over its last 16.0 innings (four games), good for a 0.56 ERA. The unit has posted a 0.95 WHIP this postseason (19.0 IP, 14 H, 4 BB). 2014 Series With Pawtucket The Bulls and Red Sox met eight times this season - all over a 29-day span from 6/3-7/1 - with the PawSox taking the season series 5-3 for the second straight year. The Bulls were held to just a.224 team average against Pawtucket and scored just 27 runs (3.4/ game), and were shut out twice, each by RHP Anthony Ranaudo - the 2014 IL s Most Valuable Pitcher who is now with Boston. Conversely, Durham pitching posted a 5.20 ERA (71.0 IP/41 ER), surrendering five runs or more five times, including 3-of-4 games in Pawtucket from 6/28-7/1 when the PawSox went 3-1. A Look Back Durham and Pawtucket meet for the second straight season in the Governors Cup Final after the Bulls bested the PawSox 3-1 in last year s final. In that series, Pawtucket earned the win in Game One before Durham came back to win three straight for the series win. The Bulls posted a 0.66 ERA over the four games (41.0 IP/3 ER), and did not allow a run over the series final 29 innings. The PawSox hit just.129 in the four games (17-for-132, 1 XBH). Since joining the IL in 1998, Durham has captured four Governors Cups, 12 South Division titles and 13 playoff berths (2004 Wild Card). 2014 marks Durham s 10th Governors Cup berth in 17 seasons in the IL, and marks the third time these two teams have met in the Governors Cup Final, as Durham captured its second league crown in 2003 over the PawSox. Close Calls Durham s last four games have been each decided by three runs or fewer, following a Bulls trend from the regular season. Dating back to 8/15, 18 of Durham s 23 games have been decided by three runs or fewer, with the Bulls going 13-10 in that span. Dating back to the start of the 2013 postseason, 11 of Durham s 13 playoff games have been decided by three runs or fewer. Southpaw Struggles After beginning the season 7-2 against left-handed starters, the Bulls went just 9-16 the rest of the regular season against southpaws. However, the Bulls actually hit left-handers better (.250) than they did right-handers (.248) in 2014. The Bulls are 1-1 in games against left-handed starters this postseason, and are scheduled to face a left-hander in each of the next three games. 14 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Ahead (Division) 9.0 Games Behind (WC) -- Current Streak W1 Home 38-34 Road 37-35 vs. RHP (starter) 59-51 vs. LHP (starter) 16-18 vs. North Division 21-27 vs. South Division 38-26 vs. West Division 16-16 Day 9-11 Night (5:05+) 66-58 Extra Innings 7-7 One-Run Games 23-21 Three or fewer 49-45 Scoring First 53-16 Opponent Scores First 22-53 Leading after 6 63-2 Trailing after 6 3-56 Tied after 6 9-11 Series Openers 23-18 Series Finales 24-17 Rubber Matches 1-2 Doubleheader Games 6-8 Sweep/Swept/Split 1/2/4 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 4-2-3 3-Game Series 3-2 Sweep/Swept 2/0 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 8-7-10 Sweep/Swept 1/2 5-Game Series 0-2 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 11-9 Tuesday 8-12 Wednesday 8-9 Thursday 12-8 Friday 12-12 Saturday 10-11 Sunday 14-8 April 18-9 May 16-14 June 11-18 July 14-12 August 15-16 September 1-0 2014 BULLS vs. RED SOX Overall 3-5 DBAP 2-2 McCoy Stadium 1-3 2013 Head-to-Head 3-5 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,247-5,948 International League 1,310-1,126 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Thursday, September 10th vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Matt Andriese (11-8, 3.77; 1-0, 3.60) LHP Henry Owens (3-1, 4.03; 0-0, 11.25) 7:05 p.m. Friday, September 11th* vs. Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Merrill Kelly (9-4, 2.76; 1-0, 2.25) LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (NR; 3-1, 0.96 in Double-A) 7:05 p.m. Saturday, September 12th* vs. Pawtucket Red Sox LHP Mike Montgomery (10-5, 4.29; NR) RHP Keith Couch (NR; 8-2, 2.96 in Double-A) 7:05 p.m. Tonight s game will be broadcast on MeTV 50.2 (Time Warner Cable Channel 1250) and on 620 AM The Buzz

Charlie s Chase Bulls skipper Charlie Montoyo is attempting to become the 10th manager in IL history to win back-to-back Governors Cups, and the first since Columbus Mike Sarbaugh who did so in 2010-11 (Durham s Bill Evers did so in 2002-03). Additionally, Montoyo would become just the fifth manager in IL history to win three Governors Cups, and first since Frank Verdi who won two with Syracuse (1969-70) and one with Columbus ( 81). Not Their First Rodeo Durham returns eight players who saw action in the 2013 Governors Cup playoffs in pitchers Merrill Kelly, Adam Liberatore, CJ Riefenhauser and Enny Romero, and position players Tim Beckham, Vince Belnome, Cole Figueroa and Mike Fontenot. Additionally, LHP Mike Montgomery was on the 2013 roster but did not pitch, while INF Ray Olmedo was on the Bulls 2009 and 2011 playoff squads. Offensive Struggles After leading the IL in batting average in 2013 (.267), Durham finished last in the IL in 2014 with a.248 team clip. The squad ranked second-to-last in the IL with 3.98 runs/game and 1,180 hits. From 6/1 through the end of the season, Durham hit just.239 as a team. Dating back to the start of the 2013 postseason, the Bulls have been held to four runs or fewer in 11 of 13 playoff contests, and have averaged just 3.1 runs/game. The Bulls are 40-for-169 (.237) this postseason, and hit just.214 in last year s Governors Cup playoffs. Let s Stay Together The Bulls lost only two players to the Tampa Bay Rays for the September 1st call-ups in RHP Brandon Gomes and RHP Steve Geltz, each relievers, while RHP Nathan Karns will start Friday for Tampa Bay in place of LHP Drew Smyly. Of the 13 position players on Durham s playoff roster, seven played 90 games or more, while of the 12 pitchers, nine made at least 20 appearances. Year Of The Punchout This season, Bulls pitchers recorded the most strikeouts in the league (1,220) while Bulls batters struck out the most in the league (1,198). The last team to lead the league in both categories was the 2007 Durham squad, which registered 1,103 strikeouts on the mound and 1,222 strikeouts at the plate. Durham pitching also led the league in punchouts in 2013 with a league-record 1,246. MOST STRIKEOUTS (MILB) Great Lakes (A) 1,256 Stockton (A+) 1,254 Nashville (AAA) 1,236 Durham (AAA) 1,220 Strikeout-To-Walk Ratio Durham s 2.58 strikeout-to-walk ratio was the second-best in the IL (1,220/473) in 2014, trailing only Columbus which posted a 2.61 clip (1,072/410). From June 1st through the end of the season, the Bulls 2.69 mark (693/257) was the best in the IL. This postseason, Durham has posted a 4:1 mark (52/13). White Washing Durham finished the season with a 15-11 record in shutout affairs. The 15 shutouts posted was tied for the most in Triple-A Baseball (Syracuse, Iowa), while the 11 shutout losses were tied for the second-most in Triple-A (Rochester, 13). The 15 shutout wins were the most the Bulls have posted in the Charlie Montoyo era (2007-present). SAVE The Date LHP Adam Liberatore is 2-for-2 in saves this postseason, converting a chance in Games Two and Three of the First Round against Columbus. The 2014 Durham squad tied Single-A West Michigan for the most saves in Minor League Baseball with 49. Southern Comfort Despite posting the sixth-best record in the IL, Durham was the first team to clinch a playoff spot on 8/25, aided by a 38-26 record against the South Division. The IL South s.467 winning percentage was the worst in Minor League Baseball in 2014. Against the other three IL playoff teams, Durham went 9-15 (CLB: 6-2, SYR: 0-8, PAW: 3-5). If You re Not First You re Last Durham spent 145 of 153 days with either a tie or sole possession of first place in the IL South in 2014, including holding sole possession for the final 102 days of the season. Despite going just 41-46 from June 1st through the end of the season, Durham s division lead was never smaller than 3.5 games the rest of the way. After the All-Star Break, the Bulls never saw their division lead shrink below 6.5 games. Swipe It Like It s Hot In the regular season the Bulls were 87-for-114 (76%) in stolen base attempts, the best success rate in the IL. Dating back to August 1st, the Bulls are 26-for-31 in stolen base attempts, and have been successful their last four tries. This Is Series Durham finished the regular season 15-13-13 (W/L/T) in 41 series this season. In 21 series against the South Division Durham went 11-5-5, but against all other teams went just 4-8-8. Their four series wins outside of the South Division came 4/26-4/29 vs SWB, 5/22-5/25 @ CLB, 5/30-6/2 vs LHV and 7/10-7/12 @ BUF. 2014 PLAYOFFS BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Ahead (Division) 9.0 Current Streak L1 Home 2-0 Road 1-2 vs. RHP (starter) 2-1 vs. LHP (starter) 1-1 vs. North Division 0-1 vs. West Division 3-1 Day 1-0 Night (5:05+) 2-2 Extra Innings 1-0 One-Run Games 2-1 Three or fewer 3-1 Scoring First 2-0 Opponent Scores First 1-2 Leading after 6 2-0 Trailing after 6 1-2 Tied after 6 0-0 Series Openers 0-2 Series Finales 1-0 Monday 0-0 Tuesday 0-1 Wednesday 0-1 Thursday 1-0 Friday 1-0 Saturday 1-0 Sunday 0-0 2014 FIRST ROUND 9/3 @ CLB L 9-4 9/4 @ CLB W 4-3 (10) 9/5 vs CLB W 3-2 9/6 vs CLB W 4-2 BULLS TRIPLE-A PLAYOFF RECORD 13 appearances 53-33.616 vs. West 33-16.673 vs. North 17-11.607 vs. South 3-6.333 BULLS GOVERNORS CUP FINAL RESULTS 1998 vs Buffalo L 3-2 1999 vs Charlotte L 3-1 2002 vs Buffalo W 3-0 2003 vs Pawtucket W 3-0 2007 vs Richmond L 3-2 2008 vs Scranton/WB L 3-1 2009 vs Scranton/WB W 3-0 2010 vs Columbus L 3-1 2013 vs Pawtucket W 3-1 ALL-TIME GOVERNORS CUP REMATCHES 1952-53 Rochester & Montreal 1955-56 Rochester & Toronto 1969-70 Syracuse & Columbus 1996-97 Columbus & Rochester 2008-09 Durham & Scranton/WB You re A Good Man, Charlie Montoyo 48-year-old is in his eighth season as manager of the Durham Bulls (633-515,.551) Has spent all 18 seasons as a minor league manager in the Tampa Bay system, managing at every level (Rookie-Triple-A) Became the winningest manager in franchise history on 7/21/14 with a 5-1 win over the Rochester Red Wings, giving him 614 victories and passing close friend and IL Hall of Famer Bills Evers, who went 613-533 over eight seasons with the franchise from 1998-2005 Managed the 2014 IL All-Stars to a 7-3 win over the PCL in Durham, upping his Triple-A All-Star Game record to 2-0 after earning a 2-1 victory in 2010 Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 6th round in 1987 out of Louisiana Tech and appeared in four games for Montreal in 1993 Hitting Coach Dave Myers 55-year-old is in his sixth season as Durham s hitting coach Spent 26 years in the Seattle system as a player ( 81-88) and coach ( 88-06) Was the Mariners third base coach from 2001-2004 13th-round pick in 1981 batted.272 over eight minor league seasons Pitching Coach Neil Allen 56-year-old is in his fourth season as Durham s pitching coach From 2000-06 was in the Yankees system, including 2005 as MLB bullpen coach Went 58-70 with a 3.88 ERA over an 11-year MLB career with the NYM, STL, NYY, CWS and CLE
