FUN FACTS DISCOVER THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE FASTEST MOTORCYCLES ON EARTH! MOTOGP RACING COMBINES BOTH HIGH PERFORMANCE FROM THE RIDER AND INNOVATION FROM THE MANUFACTURERS. THE BIKES ARE PURPOSE- BUILT FOR INDIVIDUAL RIDERS TO ENHANCE THEIR CONTROL OVER THE BIKE ON TRACK. MANY TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS ARE MADE EVERY YEAR TAKING THE COMPETITION BETWEEN THE BIKE MANUFACTURERS TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. INNOVATIONS WHICH ARE MADE IN MOTOGP TAKES A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME AND MONEY TO IMPROVE THE TEAM S CHANCE OF WINNING. MATERIAL The motorcycles used in MotoGP are purpose-built, purebred racing bikes - prototypes. They are not available for purchase by the general public and cannot be legally ridden on public roads. The technical regulations to which Grand Prix teams must adhere when they build their bikes for MotoGP competition provide a guide to the type of machinery the riders use. Grand Prix bikes are produced to win races and to showcase the design and technological capabilities of their manufacturers. The machines are therefore constructed from expensive, hardwearing and extremely light materials such as titanium and reinforced carbon fibre and benefit from advanced technology (carbon disk brakes, engine management systems, traction control), which does not feature on regular road bikes. Since they re so hard to replicate, and they re tailor-made for each driver s specific needs, the average bike is worth a seven-digit sum. However, MotoGP executives deem the vehicles priceless, and believe they d fetch far more than $2 million on the market. RIDER FITNESS It takes incredible physical strength to shift a 160kg bike around the track at breakneck speed. Not just that, managing 64-degree lean angles and braking hard down the main straight from 320+ kph speeds is lots of hard work on the body! Motoring skills and fitness play an indispensable role in MotoGP, it takes a lot of strength and caliber to master the circuits in extreme weather conditions across the world. Long hours in the gym, working on strength, endurance and flexibility all help to develop the physical prowess required to handle these powerful machines. Riders train throughout the year on cardio exercises to increase stamina along with exercises majorly concentrated on increasing muscle strength (and less on muscle volume) that allow them to stay reasonably thin but pretty strong physically. On average, a rider loses 2 liters of sweat in a 45 minutes race which is equivalent to three hours of intense workout or running a marathon on a humid and sunny day. Hence to overcome this loss of water from the body riders are provided with hydration systems. This is also the case in Formula 1 since the cockpit is so hot in racing conditions.

FUN FACTS TYRES The bikes feature a lot of one-time-use parts. The tires for example are made of stickier, softer compounds than regular tires to provide the grip needed to keep the bikes from sliding off the track in the corners. However, these have extremely short life and are thrown away after each race/training session. With the vast improvement in tire technology over recent years, which has often focused on improving the edge grip of the rubber on the shoulder of the tires, riders are now getting their machines cranked over to 64º from upright. The base tyre allocation according to the 2018 rules is as follows: During all practice sessions, warm up and the race a maximum of 22 slick tyres, of which 10 are front and 12 are rear tyres. A maximum of 13 wet tyres is permitted, 6 front and 7 rear. RIDER SAFETY Numerous MotoGP teams have used airbag suits for almost a decade, but until now their use has been entirely voluntary. Thanks to a new official ruling by governing body Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), the high-tech devices are becoming mandatory across the board in MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 for the 2018 season. The suits detect crashes prior to impact thanks to built-in accelerometers, and a trio of gyroscopes. Dainese s system also utilizes a GPS unit. These sensors constantly feed data to a main computer, communicating around 1,000 times per second. The use of multiple sensors works as a safeguard to prevent false deployments and to ensure deployments do occur when needed. The riders protective wear is made up of Kangaroo s leather with the thickness of almost 1mm serves like a second skin to the rider. This 1mm of thickness is enough to provide the rider with a good durability after a crash or a long slide. Overall the entire suit will weigh almost to 4.5kg. The hydration sits in the aerodynamic hump of the suit. Normally there will only be 200-300 milliliters of fluid because one of the big issues in racing is weight, and everybody wants to be as light as possible. ENGINE & GEARS Engine sizes permitted in MotoGP as of the 2018 season, the maximum engine displacement permitted is 1000cc, with a maximum of four cylinders and maximum bore of 81mm - two-stroke engines are not allowed. A maximum of seven engines may be used by each permanently contracted rider over all the scheduled races of the season. Penalty for infringement of this means the rider will start from the pit lane, five seconds after the green light comes on at the exit of pitlane. Gear changes take just 0.0009 seconds, shifting between the six gears on a MotoGP bike is one of the most important, and difficult, skills in the sport. Cutting-edge technology allows riders to change remarkably quickly in an upside-down gearbox (riders must downshift to increase the gears).

FUN FACTS IS AN F1 CAR FASTER THAN A MOTOGP BIKE? A MotoGP motorcycle can accelerate at an incredible top speed, but it s no match for a Formula One car in terms of downforce and braking power. The highest speed for F1 cars is around the 375 km/h mark, Andrea Dovizioso recently set a new MotoGP maximum speed record at Mugello when he clocked an eye watering 356.5 km/h. What s the difference? F1 cars have mind-blowing cornering speeds because they have more rubber on the ground and incredible aerodynamics, which increase downforce with more speed. Excluding the drivers or riders, a Formula 1 vehicle weighs four times a MotoGP bike and boasts a much more powerful engine. The tires are a whole different story: in comparison with a bike, Formula 1 single-seaters have more tires (4 instead of 2) and a more generous tread. MotoGP bikes have a crazy weight-to-power ratio, meaning they can accelerate remarkably quickly. This means bikes can go from 0 to 100 km/h in around 2.5 seconds, fractionally faster than the average F1 car.

THE PHILLIP ISLAND CIRCUIT IS 13M WIDE AND 4,448M IN LENGTH. IT TAKES EIGHT WEEKS TO BUILD, PREPARE AND PACK DOWN THE PHILLIP ISLAND CIRCUIT. CONSTRUCTED IN 1956 THEN MODIFIED IN 1988 FOR THE FIRST AUS MOTOGP TO BE HELD IN 1989. VALENTINO ROSSI WON THE FIRST AUSGP OF THE MOTOGP ERA. HONDA ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MANUFACTURER AT PHILLIP ISLAND IN THE MOTOGP ERA WITH SEVEN VICTORIES, INCLUDING THE LAST TWO YEARS. JORGE LORENZO HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE FASTEST LAP AT AUS MOTOGP TRACK. CASEY STONER WON THE MOTOGP RACE AT PHILLIP ISLAND FOR SIX SUCCESSIVE YEARS FROM 2007 UNTIL 2012, THE LAST FIVE OF WHICH WERE FROM POLE POSITION. THE FIRST TWO AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX WERE HELD AT PHILLIP ISLAND, BEFORE VISITING THE EASTERN CREEK CIRCUIT FOR SIX SUCCESSIVE YEARS. THE AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX THEN REED TO PHILLIP ISLAND IN 1997 WHERE IT HAS SINCE REMAINED. THIS IS THE 23RD TIME THAT THE GP HAS TAKEN PLACE AT PHILLIP ISLAND.
