Following the graduation of six players last season the Bears have overhauled their roster as they begin their move to Division I this season. The team features 10 newcomers who will see action, including eight freshmen and two juniors. When UNC takes the court on Friday night, the starting lineup should feature three of those newcomers. The Bears are led by lone senior Amber Elliott, who is team s leading returning scorer. Elliott averaged 9.9 points per game while starting 14 of UNC s 28 contests. Over the second half of the season last year, Elliott hit over 46 percent of her three-point attempts including tying a school record by connecting on eight against eventual Division II national champion South Dakota State on March 1. The other returning starter is guard Kayla Flavin, who started 23 of 28 games last season, averaged 6.7 points per game and connected on 17 three-pointers. Denver opened its exhibition season on Nov. 6 with a 91-78 victory over Sparta Praha at Hamilton Gym. Junior Tasha Jones led the way for the Pioneers with 20 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Senior Ragan Neblett added 17 points. UNC and DU have met 35 times over the year, however, the two squads have not played since Dec. 29, 1997 when the Bears won 66-52 in Denver. The Bears begin the regular season on Nov. 21 when they battle Regis University as part of the Al Kaly Shrine Classic in Pueblo, Colo. unc probable starters Northern Colorado (2002-03 Statistics) (* = assists per game) No. Name Pos. The Last Time We Met: UNC bested Denver 66-52 on Dec. 29, 1997 in Denver. The Bears got 21 points from Missy McVoy and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Kara Ketterer in the victory. UNC built a 28-21 halftime advantage and kept building on that lead on the way to the 14-point victory. About Denver: The Pioneers are coming off a 12-18 record last season and a fifth place finish in the Sun Belt West Division. The Pioneers also know what it is like to have a youth movement, as seven of their 14 roster players are freshman this season. DU s leading returner is Tasha Jones, a junior guard who averaged 9.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Jones scored 20 points in the Pioneers exhibition opener. (2002-03 Statistics for Each Team) unc notes Youth Movement: Following the graduation of six players, UNC begins its Division I move with a roster full of underclassmen. Of the Bears 17 active players, nine of them are freshman and 10 in all are in their first season with the program. The 2003-04 roster features only one senior, Amber Elliott, and four juniors, two of whom are junior college transfers. Long Range Bombers: If there is one thing the Bears should be able to do this season, it is make the three-point shot. The UNC roster is loaded with players, who although have not proven themselves at the collegiate level yet, were spectacular shooters in high school. Freshman Erin Robben set the Colorado prep records for three-pointers in a game (11), season (96) and career (280) at North Park High School while fellow freshman Jena Fosdick set a school and Nebraska Class A record by connecting on nine trifectas in a game. Other newcomers, Kendra Lambrecht, Bailey Dillon and Melanie Drangmeister, can also fill it up from the outside. Division I Schedule: In the Bears first season of reclassification to Division I, UNC will face five Division I teams this season. The schedule includes Air Force, Denver (exhibition), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and Utah State. The Bears also have a home-and-home series with Utah Valley State, a fellow reclassified team who is also making the leap to Division I. Like Brother, Like Sister: Junior Carrie Frazier is in her first season with the Bears team after transferring from Mt. San Jacinto Junior College. But Frazier already knew somebody when she first got to campus... her brother Michael. Michael also attended Mt. San Jacinto Junior College and is in his first season as a shooting guard with the UNC men s basketball team. Bears Make Move to Division I: On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The 2002-03 sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level. This season the Bears begin a four-year reclassification period before officially becoming a Division I school in 2007. Over the next four years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. UNC will be competiting as an independent during the 2003-04 school year and will hopefully find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period.
