Bill s BS 10/31/14 It s Banquet Time! First ours, then the NEDIV Mini-Con, and finally the Kryder Series. by Bill Stewart We had an incident at the September Solo. Fortunately, the passenger only had a scratch, while the car was a bit more serious. Thanks everyone for your cooperation! Those walls are hard. Well the weather was great and Bruce, well he was great in the S2000, now in the Corvette, he is awesome! I want to thank Aaron Woloszyn for all his hard work as Solo Chairman. I know that it sometimes seems like herding cats, but we had a great season and oh so much fun. Several of us went down to Nelson Ledges for a wet track day early in September and then for the PDX and Club Trials at the end of the month. I think the track is back into the shape of 2 or 3 years ago. It s encouraging, but there is a long way to go. Todd Karam, the new manager, has some interesting ideas. Nick Simon has not had very good luck this year. At the Club Trials, after setting the FTD on his second lap, the car went over the lip on the outside of Oak Tree, into the tire wall and over on its side. The GTI is not pretty any more. Nick Simon at the MVR Club Trials before the big oops I know that Mahoning Valley lost money on their Golden Harvest event at Nelson. Neohio had to cancel their Regional at PittRace for lack of entries. I hope that we can support them more next year. Back from the Runoffs, I had to really hustle to get the Covered Bridge Rally ready. I am afraid that Dave Hammer and I should have triple checked the instructions. Next time, I would like a rally novice, with lots of questions, and also an experienced person who knows what questions to ask, to do a pre-run. We had beautiful weather and 4 of the cars had novices. Our banquet is tonight. We have had a great year and we deserve to celebrate! We always have some impressive and sometimes amusing prizes! I think of the other ones that I have been to. We have more fun! Bob Mazza s South Shore Wine Company will be a fantastic place for it and I bet Calimaris does great catering. I can t wait. I actually am going to have a weekend off before making my way, along with Charlie Campbell and maybe Dave Hammer to the NEDIV Mini-Con. Along with the banquet, this is where the planning and the scheduling 2 SCCA Chairman John Walsh in the Runoffs Pace Car wearing his Nelson Ledges cap for next year gets done. It should be interesting with Thompson now open in Connecticut, Palmer in Massachusetts getting ready, and PittRace finishing its second half. Next is the Kryder banquet, and then Thanksgiving. Things to think about for next year. The North American International Auto Show is always a fantastic road trip. Our Erie Auto Show is at the end of January, should we try to have a booth? Neohio has their Ohio Winter Rally, and we should have our Sno-Go Rally. The SCCA National Convention is again being combined with the MSX Motorsports Expo down in Charlotte in February. So, let s enjoy the banquets, remember this year, take a rest, and dream of next year. See you at the banquet! Bill

Covered Bridge Road Rally October 26, 2014 We would like to thank everyone who came out to our Annual Covered Bridge Rally. The weather and the leaves were beautiful. This year we travelled to the Covered Bridge Pizza in North Kingsville, although some relied on their cell phone GPSes and went to the one in Saybrook. We finished at Crowley s in Platea with awards and many prizes. Major thanks to Dave Hammer, Bob & Brenda Nick, Ron Johnstonbaugh, and Greg Lester who worked the checkpoints. Also major thanks to Bob Mazza for helping with the wine for prizes. It was great to see Bob Hart. It s been too long. Great Day! Runoffs Report Our SCCA National Championship Runoffs visited Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and its famous Corkscrew for the first time. The hills and tight turns were a huge contrast to Road America, the host of the Runoffs for the last 5 years. I was surprised to see all the familiar NEDIV and Great Lakes friends made the trip. Our former RE, Tom Ward made it out from DC with his crazy hat to work corners. Steel Cities s Steve Mortimer and Mahoning Valley s Cliff McCandless were up on the starter s stand. Steel Cities Jeff Hutzelman, who once worked for me at Erie Computer manned Timing & Scoring. SCCA s Chairman, John Walsh, seemed to be everywhere, wearing his Nelson Ledges cap. The action was fast and furious on the track and also in the tech shed, with penalties at both places. I worked a personal worst 8 black flag alls in one day during qualifying. The fierce competition created carnage in Turn 2, the first real turn and it continued all the way to the turn 11 gravel trap. After 3 days of qualifying, the 27 classes started the racing on Friday with the big guns of T1. Sure enough, 4 cars were taken out at turn 2 right after the start. Philly s Andrew Aquilante just walked away from the field to win in his Phoenix Racing Mustang. Local legend, Joe Huffaker won GT-L for his 9th Runoffs Championship in his famous rear wheel drive Mini. Formula F saw 3 full course yellows with Summit Point neighbor Jeremy Grenier finishing on top in his Citation Honda. Ohio native and SCCA VP, Eric Prill had a spirited race long dice for second with Joe Huffaker in F Production until he flat-spotted his tires while Rookie Nigel Saurino cruised for the win. A Sedan dominator, Andy McDermid tried to soldier on with a broken brake rotor, but Dylan Olsen and Bill Baten were able to squeeze by for first and second. Chris Farrell s Stohr Suzuki was the fastest car of the whole week as he won the new Prototype 1 class. The start of the T3 race was a mess with at least 4 cars making contact in Turn 2. At the end, David Daughtery won his 8th Runoffs in a Nissan 370Z after swapping the lead with Tom Wickersham. Saturday stated off with a 2 hour fog delay. We finally got started with Cliff Ira dropping to 3rd from the pole in STL and trailing smoke from a loose dip stick in his Acura Integra. He regained the lead on lap 9, but the smoke got much worse with 2 to go. His engine held together enough for the victory. Turn 2 saw another first lap fiasco as Rich Rigda took out Addison Lee and T2 pole sitter Kurt Rezzetano. Andrew Longe and Kyle Kelley swapped paint and the lead until a drag race out of turn 11 ended with Longe s Porsche winning by.047 seconds. Robert Allaer held off 16 year old Andrew Evans to win Formula Continental. Springboro, OH native Scott Rettich dominated Formula Enterprises for the 4th year and also won the Super Sweeps. British Columbia s Colin Jackson won GT-3 for the 3rd time in his Nissan 240SX. Mike Anderson swapped the lead with Alan McCullum on the last 2 laps of the Formula Mazda race, but after 3 second places, he finally stood on the top of the podium. In the E Production race, Matt Reynolds passed Jim Daniels on the second lap and went on the win by 20 seconds in his Miata. Aaron Downey was 3rd in his 1976 Mazda RX-3. Andrew Aquilante ruled GT-2 in his Corvette for his 2nd win of the week. Fabian Okonski went into the lead of the Prototype 2 race, but was passed by 2 cars when a yellow came out. He got the win when the 2 offenders were penalized. Sunday opened with the T4 and B-Spec race. In T4, Daniel Bender in his Mazda MX-5 passed the Mazda RX-8 of Izzy Sanchez on the lap 9 restart for the win. B-Spec pole John Heinricy pulled into the pits with the ECU problems that haunted him all week. This continued on p.6 Above: Jeff Hutzelman, Bill Stewart, Lisa Noble, John Walsh, & Tom Ward at the worker party Right: MVR s Cliff McCandless hands the checkered flag to STU Champ Andric Hartanto 5

Runoffs Report continued allowed Kyle Keenan in his Kia Rio to battle Travis Washay in a Mini for the win. Dearborn s Brian Novak led wire to wire to win his 3rd Formula 500 Championship. Formula Vee was a 4 way tussle with Terran Swanson leading Vermont s Richard Siebenaler and Steel Cities Rick Shields most laps. Andrew Whitson edged past Shields on the last turn for 3rd but then the top 3 were all disqualified in tech and Shields became the winner. The GT1 race was a little bit faster. When the pole sitting Jaguar of Michael Lewis broke its differential at the start, Kyle Kelley was able to cruise to victory in his Corvette. J.R. Osborne slowly drew away from Alex Mayer and Gary Hickman to win Formula 1000. Lawrence Loshak diced with Jason Isley the whole H Production race to win in his CRX. Formula Atlantic pole sitter, Michael Mallinen, took the early lead but then slowed and finally dropped out. 17 year old Conner Kearby started 6th but had over a second a lap on everyone. He passed Mahoning Valley s Sedat Yelkin for second and then got the lead and the win when Mallinen dropped out. 44 Spec Racer Fords took the green flag and 4 didn t finish the first lap. Mike Miserendino led for most of the race but shifting problems allowed Cliff White to harass, and then pass him on lap 16 in the Corkscrew. Miserendino didn t give up and finished 2nd by only.065 seconds. T.J. Acker finished 3rd with Scott Rettich 4th. And there was the Spec Miata fiasco. The race itself had all the rubbing and bumping that you would expect. Mark Drennan from San Jose led the entire race with Kyle Kaiser, Andrew Carbonell, and Brian Ghidinelli swapping place behind. However, a group from Oregon filled a protest after qualifying about the cylinder heads of the top 9 cars. So we stopped all the cars at the end of the race and the tech inspectors pulled all the usual top 6 plus ones that they wanted to look at the heads. 8 were sent to last place and Kyle Kaiser was DQed completely. Michael LaBouff was DQed for reckless driving. So the 7th place driver, Mark Sterns, became the SM Champion! SCCA and Mazda are now working on a way to better police things. Anytime that you have a big event at a new location you have lots of mostly small problems. Honestly, SCCA did not expect 530 entries, many with semi-truck rigs. They were forced to use the secondary paddock. Cars from there had to travel on the track to the regular grid. It was usually hot most of the week, and then we were delayed by fog on Saturday. The track has unusually stick sound rules during the week too. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised how well things went and I had a great time! Congratulations to all the racers and all the workers! I can t wait to go to Daytona and then Mid-Ohio in 2016! 6 Love at the track & A surprise FTD By: Aaron Woloszyn 2014 SOLO Chair Our last two events of the year where both very exciting and a lot of fun for everyone involved. We once again had gorgeous weather for the September 7th event. We had some friends from both the north east, WNY, and the south, Steel Cities, come up for a day of racing. Bruce Wesley in his beautiful Silver Corvette took both FTD (Fastest Time of the Day) and PAX. Our local guys Nick Simon and Nick Kelly were both hot on his tail all day, but in the end could not best the Vette. October 12th was our last event of the 2014 season for MBR and it truly turned out to be one for the books. Upon arriving at the track to set up, it was a brisk 30 degrees! However by the time lunch rolled around it had warmed up to a nice crisp fall day. Being the last event of the season, MBR was very surprised to see a large number of first time drivers taking part and many of which already stated being excited for the upcoming season. Nick Simon co-drove a Civic Si for this event and took overall PAX time, while FTD went to myself! You heard correctly. A DSM took FTD. I could not have been more excited and proud. I want to thank my fellow racers for all of their congrats and kind words. The cheering did not stop there however. The last car of the day was driven by Andrew Ferrara who was co-driving his girlfriend Kate Bell s Genesis Coupe. A few key people knew the day was leading up to this epic moment. Upon finishing his run, Andrew came to a quick stop, got out, ran to the back of the car and waited. Once Kate got out to see what was going on, the proposal happened! She said yes! Love at the track! I look forward to seeing you all next year for our 2015 season!

He is trying to settle a discrepancy with motorsportreg. We still need to make our contribution to the Neckers Memorial. Membership - We have 84 active members, 3 have expired. For weekend memberships, we will have a hand written list at the event which Kate Bell will enter them into Nationals Excel form and send it in. Trophies - We need trophies! We finally ran out of the glasses. We will have Billies. Consensus was to wait until next year for regular awards. We need ideas for our year-end awards and we need to order them real soon after our last Solo. Old Business Tim said that we will donate our Gary Neckers Memorial $1,400 to the Clymer Fire Department. Dave Hammer has written a letter to them. New Business Sam Mehler will put our new sponsor, Bonnell s Collision on our web-page. Tim has the 1,000 Misery Bay business cards that Andrew Aul created before he moved to California. Tim and KV agreed that we have a tradition of paying our banquet fee for our Member of the Year and their guest. We should invite our sponsors, Mike Schmitt at Tires for Less and Scott Bonnell to this year s banquet. Rich Hall and KV will have their MG Midgets at the Scions of Britain car show at the Waterford Square of Sept.21. Tim and Logan never ordered their jackets. Bill reported that Mahoning Valley will be having both PDXes and Club Trials at their Golden Harvest Races, September 27 & 28, at Nelson Ledges. The motoseries folks have really done a lot of work on the track. Several MBR folks will be going to the Funday this Saturday. The gift certificates from last years banquet will be honored by the new management. 10 continued on p.11

A request to approve the minutes of the September 4th meeting was made by R.E. Tim Mackey. Kathy Vanderwende mentioned that a correction was necessary for the August and September minutes. It was stated in these minutes that, in the past, the dinners for the Member of the Year and their guest were paid by the Region. This was incorrect. Only the Member of the Year s dinner was paid by the Region, and did not include the guest or spouse. A motion to approve the amended minutes was made by Dave Hammer and seconded by Aaron Woloszyn. Dave reported that the Treasury has $11,900.86 to date, with one outstanding check payable to the Clymer Volunteer Fire Department for the Gary Neckers Memorial contribution. Dave has paid for the recent purchase of the pylons and the latest Speedway payment. In addition, insurance and sanction fees are current. However, weekend memberships need to be paid. Dave also briefly discussed the Motorsportsreg discrepancy. MEMBERSHIP: Andy Ferrara reported that there are currently 83 active members. TROPHIES: No trophies were purchased this year. Anyone needing these cards should contact him. Sam Mehler will contact our sponsors this year and invite them to our year-end banquet. The region will pay for their dinner and for their guest. NEW BUSINESS: A brief discussion was held concerning the last event at Lake Erie Speedway. Logan Flaherty asked that the region secure current and working telephone numbers and contacts in the event that incident reports need to be filed. Our last incident report has been filed, and no further correspondence has been received from Topeka. Dave Hammer reminded the membership that MBR has a jinx with Mustangs. Kim Witherow gave a banquet report scheduled for November 1 at the South Shore Winery. She discussed the menu, desserts, and payment methods.
