Every race I run is in preparation for the Indianapolis 500. Indy is the most important thing in my life. It is what I live for. If you win Indy, you re in elite company. Even if you win it once. Indy just has so much history and tradition. It s the most important race in the world. Al Unser, Jr.

CHAPTER ONE Each year under an Indiana sky, 33 of the fastest drivers on earth strap themselves into missiles that propel them around a 2.5 mile racetrack at 200+ mph. They compete for a place in history and the coveted Borg-Warner Trophy, which is awarded to the best performer in this field the man or woman who crosses the finish line first after 500 miles of mind-numbing concentration and raw bravado. When Ray Harroun, driving the Marmon Wasp, won the inaugural Indianapolis 500 nearly one hundred years ago, little could he have known then that he was being inducted into one of motorsports most highly esteemed clubs, a small, revered sect of performers tested and proven at the top of their class and sport. To win Indy is to carve one s name in the stone of time. It is equivalent to finding the Holy Grail. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway now hosts the biggest one-day sporting event in the world, with more than 300,000 attendees making an annual pilgrimage to the track each May. Walking through the gates of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is like walking into a cathedral. Everyone remembers the first time he/she entered these hallowed grounds. The place has a soul. And somewhere beneath the 1

INDY 500: An American Icon veneer of grandstands, office buildings and garages beats a heart that echoes the greatest moments that happened here the sounds and visions of races past agonies of defeat and ground-swelling cheers of victory. Listen, you can hear it. Close your eyes, you can see it. Like an old wartime battlefield, this place captures and embraces history vividly. Heroes from the past, no longer with us, look down smiling. It is here that their true resting place lies. Their spirits live on and continue to move us. Many, for whom auto racing is a religion, worship their gods here. And those gods seemingly perform miracles. In the face of often incredible odds, we ve witnessed remarkable achievements. This place can be unsympathetic and unforgiving, trying the mettle of the sport s top performers. Yet treat the place with kindness and respect, embrace it and learn its ways; it will return such studied consideration by revealing its unique nuances. Just don t take it for granted. Indy 500: An American Icon attempts to convey the day-to-day atmosphere, emotions, and frustrations of some of the key players those of drivers, team owners, crew members and officials against the backdrop of unfolding events leading up to the big Sunday race during the Memorial Day weekend. Providing an introspective look at how it all happens the plans, schemes, ideas and dreams that put drivers into cars and those cars onto the track we ll peek into the closets and crevices of the IndyCar fraternity as it prepares for the year s greatest race. And we ll explore the challenges that confront everyone on this quest for greatness. The personalities coloring this world are numerous. Each year, they appear at the speedway to either relive past glories or strive anew for a taste of beckoning victory. Many of these individuals still possess the physical and emotional scars left by previous attempts. Winning is the goal, but for most, just being here means something special. Results aside, it s a race they will never forget. 2

Chapter One Every year, there are a thousand stories to be told at Indianapolis those of courage, tenacity, ambition, rivalry, injury and heartbreak. There are also tales of success, achievement, heroism and personal victory. As we move into another month of May, there are many more stories to be written. They are here, waiting to be shared. Hopes will be dashed, dreams broken, fortunes won or lost. As we celebrate victory, perhaps our winner will be joined in spirit by some of those heroes from races past. When it s all over and the crowds have diminished, this man or woman will silently reflect upon the hard work, people and preparations that helped make this greatest day possible. 3
