World Volley F É D É R A T I O N I N T E R N A T I O N A L E DE VOLLEYBALL A momentous moment for Olympism Iwas extremely proud to represent the FIVB at the IOC Congress in Copenhagen last month, which was groundbreaking for many different reasons. The IOC Congress approval of a set of recommendations in a document focusing strongly on youth and athletes titled The Olympic Movement in Society was revolutionary and I had no hesitation in offering the FIVB s full support of such an important project. This is a new era for the FIVB and with it a new partnership with the IOC, where working together, the athletes of the sport of Volleyball stand to gain the most. Having FIVB Executive Vice-President Mr. André Meyer and FIVB Executive Vice- President and IOC member Mrs. Rita Subowo, who made an excellent presentation on Olympism and Youth, also in attendance in Copenhagen, Volleyball had an excellent platform to not only be listened to but also to absorb all the latest crucial developments that are rapidly shaping the sports world of today, such as the digital revolution and athlete care. On that note, I would like to, on behalf of the FIVB, congratulate Rio de Janeiro for being selected as the host city of the 2016 Olympic Games. Brazil is a Volleyball country and, similar to Beijing, Volleyball will have another excellent Olympic platform in Rio. The FIVB, as an Olympic sports international federation, will closely collaborate with the IOC and the Olympic Movement to develop world sport in general but with obvious attention towards Volleyball. Therefore, the FIVB Executive Committee will discuss the very important IOC Congress document during its November meeting, ensuring that the FIVB and the IOC are in unison in making youth and athletes key priorities in all FIVB activities. Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President www.fivb.org Official Bulletin No.44 October 2009 Edition in English News Eight top clubs to battle for world domination Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President The FIVB Men s Club World Championship is back after a 17-year break. The elite men s club competition, which last featured in 1992, will take place at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar from November 3-8 and feature eight of the top clubs from around the globe. The teams are: Trentino BetClic (ITA), Zenit Kazan (RUS), Corozal (PUR), Zamalek (EGY), PGE SKRA Belchatow (POL), Payakan (IRI), Al-Arabi (QAT), and the South American champion. The previous four editions (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992) were all won by sides from Italy, and this year s Italian entry, Trentino, is hoping to keep the streak alive. This year s squad has the capacity to fight on equal terms against anyone, said BetClic s Bulgarian coach Radostin Stoytchev. The tournament in Doha is very attractive, but also difficult, because we have only a short time to get ready for the event. The first matches of the round will give us an understanding of what level we are at compared with the other teams. One of the team s aiming to end Italy s dominance at the competition is Russian juggernaut Zenit Kazan, which is in prime fighting shape, according to the team s American Olympic star, Lloy Ball. Of the four years I have been playing here, the team we have now is the best, Ball said. I think Trentino BetClic will be our main competitor at the Club World Championship, but the other teams can spring a surprise or two, especially with the (Golden Formula) in play. The Golden Formula, to be trialed for the first time at an FIVB tournament in Doha, requires that the first attack for each team begins from the back row to produce longer rallies. Puerto Rico s Corozal is looking to go a step further and end not only Italy s stranglehold on the competition, but Europe s. We are taking a strong team to Qatar for the World Championship, said Puerto Rico Volleyball Federation President Nelson Perez. We are not going there just to travel. We are going to compete against the best clubs in the world and to show them our competitive level and the quality of our players. The tournament will consist of two rounds with 16 matches in total, including 12 Preliminary Round matches and four Final Round matches, with total prize money of US$750,000. Volleyball MEN & WOMEN 2009 FIVB World Grand Champions Cup 12 teams to vie for World Grand Champions title 2009 FIVB Boys Youth Volleyball World Championship Jesolo - Bassano del Grappa, Italy 28 August - 6 September 2009 Six men s and six women s national teams are preparing to converge in Japan for the quadrennial FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in November, each fighting for their shot at glory. The surprise package at the World Grand Champions Cup is the Thai women s team, which caused a major sensation at the recent 15th Asian Senior Women s Volleyball Championship in Vietnam by stunning reigning champions Japan 3-1 in the semifinals before storming on to beat 11-time winners China 3-1 in the final to win the Asian meet for the first time ever. On the men s side, Brazil warmed up for Japan with a series of five friendlies against reigning Olympic champions the United States. Brazil may have won First time s a charm for Serbia First-time participant Serbia made an impressive debut by winning the 2009 FIVB Boys Youth World Championship with a 25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 25-20, 15-11 victory over Iran at Palazzo del Turismo in Jesolo, Italy, on September 6. Aleksandar Atanasijevic, named the tournament s Most Valuable Player, paced the Serbian offense with 24 points, while Vuk Milutinovic finished with 15, including four blocks. Purya Fayazi topped Iran with 19 points and Amir Ghafour collected 16. The Serbians won the final despite committing 31 errors, 12 more than their opponents. Having won every tournament this year, Brazil is without question the team to beat The teams recently battled tooth and nail to reach the coveted competition in continental qualifying tournaments around the globe. Reigning men s and women s champions Brazil will be back to defend their titles after both teams won their respective South American titles. Joining them will be hosts Japan, Thailand, Dominican Republic, Italy and wild-card Korea on the women s side, and Japan, Poland, Iran, wild-card Egypt and the NORCECA champion on the men s side. The women s tournament will run from November 10-15 in Tokyo and Fukuoka, while the men s competition will take place from November 18-23 in Osaka and Nagoya. The Brazilian women are considered the team to beat in Japan, as the squad arrives in stellar form, having won the last nine tournaments they have participated in, including all six this year. It s very important that we are still wining after our gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, said Brazilian libero Fabi after her team won their 16th South American title in early October. This group has young players and Olympic champions and I m very happy with the title. We also earned a place in the Grand Champions Cup, where we will have a great test. all five matches, but head coach Bernardo Rezende refused to get carried away by the relative ease of the sweep. Let s not kid ourselves, he said. We know we re not complete as a team, just as the Americans aren t at the top of their game yet either. That said, these five matches were important because it allowed us to take a look at the players in this new Olympic cycle. WOMEN Thailand Dominican Rep. MEN & WOMEN 2010 FIVB WORLD LEAGUE Egypt, Germany qualify for 2010 FIVB World League Volleyball Germany and Egypt navigated their way through two tricky qualification rounds to book their spots in the prestigious 2010 FIVB World League. The inaugural World League Qualification Tournament began in August with four challengers Iran, Egypt, Germany and Mexico who were chosen by their confederations via direct nomination or qualification tournament. Germany beat Mexico in Berlin in August and Egypt overcame Iran early September in the First Round for a chance to play against the bottom two teams from the 2009 World League: No. 15 Japan and No. 16 Venezuela. Germany booked a return to the World League after completing a double over Venezuela with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-12) win in Riesa, Germany on September 19. The Germans also won the opener in straight sets. For us, more important than the results is to have reached the 2010 World League, Germany coach Raúl Lozano said. This summer we wanted to qualify for the World Championships as well as play a good European Championship and European League. We did this and have had a good summer. For Germany it is very important to be back in the group of top teams and have matches on a high level before the World Championships. In the World League it will not be that important to win but to have matches which help us to develop. For that reason I would be glad to have opponents like Brazil, Russia or Poland. Germany proudly returns to the World League in 2010 In the other Second Round clash, Egypt took both matches from Japan to secure their fourth appearance in the World League after participating in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Egypt won the second match at the Cairo Stadium complex on September 19 by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-22). Thailand crowned continental champion for first time with win over China Devastating Thailand brought the curtain down on the 15th Asian Senior Women s Volleyball Championship with a bang by overpowering 11-time champions China in four dramatic sets on September 13 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Thailand s magnificent come-from-behind 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 victory over the well-established Chinese team, which claimed fifth place at the World Grand Prix in Tokyo this summer, ended Thailand s goldmedal drought at the biennial competition. It s beyond everyone s expectation. I never thought that we could come this far. To win a semifinal berth in the Asian Championship was already a dream come true for us. Now we have another sweet dream winning the Asian crown for the first time ever, said Thai head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai. As continental champions, Thailand will represent Asia at the World Grand Champions Cup this November in Japan. Flowers, trophies and smiles: Thailand makes history in Hanoi with first continental championship 3

Beach Volleyball MEN & women Juliana and Larissa enter the history books with Barcelona gold Two days after capturing their fourth international Beach Volleyball tour championship together, Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca became the first team women s or men s to win eight SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medals in a season by capturing the US$190,000 Hyundai Open Barcelona on September 13. Their 21-17, 28-26 victory in the 55-minute all-brazilian final over second-seeded Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli was the third SWATCH gold in a row and fifth in five FIVB stops for top-seeded Juliana and Larissa. Juliana, who was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the Hyundai Open Barcelona, and Larissa hadn t lost in 18 matches heading into the final. The record of seven gold medals in a season was established in 1995 by Brazilians Roberto Lopes and Franco Neto and tied by five teams since then, including Juliana and Larissa in 2006 and two weeks earlier in The Netherlands where they also defeated Talita and Antonelli in The Hague final. The most important thing was clinching the tour championship, said the 26-year old Juliana, who shared the $30,000 firstplace prize with Larissa to improve their Tyra Turner (back) and Angie Akers of the United States work together to return the Mikasa 2009 FIVB earnings to $368,100. Winning eight gold medals also means that we have been able to play at a very high level each week against the best teams in the world. Except for the world championships, this has been a great season. Their Hyundai Open Barcelona gold meant that Brazilian women have topped the podium 12 out of 14 events on the 16-stop 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar. The men s 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour wraps up on November 1 at the doublegender stop in Sanya, China, while the women s season ends the first week of November in Phuket, Thailand. Polish pairs pack a punch at Junior Worlds In a classic battle of unbeaten teams, Poland s Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz defeated Brazilian duo Alvaro Filho and Vitor Gonsalves to win gold at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships for players under 21 years old on September 20. On the women s side, Poland s Monika Brzostek and Kinga Kolosinka overpowered previously unbeaten Dutch tandem Danielle Remmers and Michelle Stiekema 21-18, 17-21, 15-11 to finish on top of the podium at the ninth edition of the event, held in Blackpool, England. Russia s Irina Chaika and Anna Vozakova took the bronze. Sixty-nine teams (36 men s, 33 women s) A full house takes in the action on center court at the 2009 Barcelona Hyundai Open representing 29 nations took part in the fiveday competition. Twenty-year-olds Kadziola and Szalankiewicz brushed aside their 18-year-old Brazilian opponents in straight sets, 23-21, 21-19, in a 45-minute finale. MEN & women Beach Volleyball World Cup to pave way to 2012 Olympics The application period for the firstever FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup got under way in early September when the FIVB sent documents outlining the new event to all its Confederations and National Federations, encouraging as many of the organizations as possible to participate in the initial phase of the tournament. The inaugural World Cup will take place over three years, from 2010-2012, and will act as an additional route through which National Federations will be able to qualify Beach Volleyball teams for the Olympics. The World Cup, which was approved by the FIVB Board of Administration in April, will be a complementary competition to the current SWATCH FIVB World Tour and SWATCH FIVB World Championships, with the number of countries involved expected to jump from around 60 at present to over 150. The ambitious project is meant to be a catalyst to develop the game globally and is part of ongoing initiatives at the FIVB to provide its Confederations and National Federations with greater op- portunities to become more involved in Beach Volleyball and Volleyball operations. As such, the FIVB intends to provide financial assistance and other supporting material to the participating Federations. We are very excited about getting our Confederations and National Federations involved in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup from the opening stages of the event, said FIVB President Jizhong Wei. The tournament will introduce the sport to an audience of millions and we are confident it will help legitimize Beach Volleyball as a global sport. The tournament will usher in landmark changes to the Beach Volleyball Olympic qualification system the seven Olympic berths available through the World Cup will be designated to the National Federations instead of the individual teams for the first time ever. The 24 qualifiers for each of the men s and women s Olympic Beach Volleyball tournaments will be made up of the 16 best teams from the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour rankings, the five winners (one from each continent) of the continental phase of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup, the two winners of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification phase and one berth granted to the host country (if yet to qualify). Ten teams will compete in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup final stage tentatively scheduled for the end of June 2012. The World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for the world to get better acquainted with Beach Volleyball and for countries far and wide to participate in the Olympic qualifying process, said FIVB Executive Vice President Ary Graça. The FIVB is in the process of finding a title sponsor and official ball supplier for the event. For further details, including the terms and conditions, please consult the World Cup website: www.fivb.org/en/beachvolleyball/ Competitions/WorldCup/ The inaugural Beach Volleyball World Cup will take place over three years, from 2010-2012 5

Technical & Development FIVB launches latest Volleyball educational DVD The latest installment of revolutionary educational tools has been released by the FIVB thanks to a new DVD titled Multimedia Teaching Material for Referees 2009.
