LIFTLINE A PUBLICATION OF THE OC SKI CLUB PRESIDENT S CORNER David Simonian President Howdy OCers, It s fitting that I am writing this article after a drive in on this Snowy Friday! First snow of the season, with much more POW to come. The first bus ran Sunday, November the 18th, to the Beast. Lee Cohen in group sales posted on Facebook that they installed new gondolas, so that s something to look forward to this season. Member Spotlight The Membership Committee I didn t want to single out one member of this committee, because they all do a great job. Showing up and sitting in the corner every Thursday, dealing with renewals, constantly updating valuable Club statistics, and the laminating forget about it! Sometimes it s a thankless job that gets overlooked, and I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the job they all do. Gretchen Riley has been a member of the Club since 09. Besides the fact that she has been on the Membership Committee for the last 2 years, she has also been Applicant chair for 4 years, held the office of the President and Secretary and also a member of our Board of Directors. As you can see Gretchen has done more than her share of volunteering for this Club. Thank you Gretchen for all you do! Gretchen will be stepping down from the membership committee for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. If you would be interested in volunteering with the membership committee, I am sure Gretchen would Great Job and Thank you to Jeff Kenton, who did a phenomenal job with the Ski Expo. He has the process of promoting the Club and signing up applicants down to a procedure, and I was very impressed with the success of it. Also, Jeff put together the Stance and Balance Clinic, Nov 15, with Garrick Dardini and his associate Travis from Steiner Sports. There is also a balance and movement clinic November 29 as well. Great Job to Kathy, Arline, Membership, and everyone else who made the Applicant Party such a success. We have over 350 people there. Until that night, I have never driven into the PCC and not been able to park, it was amazing! Thanks you to all our vendors, volunteers, donations, members, returning members/applicants and new applicants and for making this event the largest attended Applicant Party Ever! train you as a replacement. Amy Teal, has been helping with the Membership Committee for just under 2 years. It is a selfless act to come to each meeting, not to mention the Happy Hour meetings and then try to conduct business, The OC Ski Club appreciates all that Amy has done for us. Amy will also be stepping down from the membership committee as well to focus on the pleasures of Parenting. We wish Amy and her husband all the best on their new endeavors. Before Pat Jones became Applicant Chair she assisted Mike and Gloria with their Happy Hour Mailings and other communications. She volunteers at the VB tournament, helping in the kitchen. I am also told that Mike Koutelis is responsible for her skiing again after a 30 year hiatus. She considered volunteering for the A&E positon but found out that the Club needed help with Membership and figured that her talents would be better utilized in that capacity. We appreciate your talents Pat, and thank you for all that you do. DECEMBER 2018 WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/OCSKICLUB TWITTER.COM/OCSKICLUB WWW.OCSKICLUB.ORG ADMINISTRATION Cathy Marvin Vice President for Administration Can you say PAR-TEE???? That s exactly what the Applicant Party was. With over 300 people, there wasn t a parking spot to be found. We had 72 people join our Club on the Applicant Party night and 83 joined at the Ski Expo. Great job to the Membership Team of Gretchen, Amy and Pat and to Jeff and all his helpers at Expo. Also a BIG THANK YOU to Arline and Erin and all of the volunteers who made the Applicant Party a success. Thank you Fred for getting all the raffle items. We had volunteers at the Warren Miller Movie passing out brochures about our Club thanks again to all that helped over 2 nights. We have 2 new people who have stepped up to run the Fundraising Table stop over and meet Chris Bendon and Jeremy Miller. I want to thank Sharon Gosden for running our Holiday Party a good time was had by all. December is going to seem slow compared to everything that happened in November. We will have our monthly HH on 12/19. Invite your friends to any meeting or HH we love guests who turn into Members. AND you can get a $5 referral fee applied to your dues. Get your referral cards at the Membership Table put your name and Member number on the back so you can get the credit. Life is good buses are running people are joining our Club oh yeah Happy Holidays to everyone!

ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT Erin O Brien and Arline Welch Applicant Party Thursday, November 8, 2018 How do you measure success? Elon Musk, the reality is great highs, terrible lows & unrelenting stress. Don t think people want to hear about the last two. So here goes with the HIGHS. If numbers count - the Applicant Party was a huge success with a best calculation of 361 attendees. After receiving many kudos and accolades that evening, it was instantly recognized that the true heroes are the many volunteers both Members and Applicants, the Committee Members, the Trip Leaders, the Officers & Board of Directors who agreed to make the advanced purchase admission fee $5.00, and the Members who spent hours at the Ski & Craft Beer Showcase Showcasing this amazing, well-oiled Club. Without getting into a whole litany of thank yous, it would be thoughtless not to mention and give a special thanks to the Staff at PCC; Teddy our friendly bartender, Marie the chef, cook & bottle washer and Wanda, banquet manager they are always there to serve us. And many, many thanks to all the Applicants, Members and volunteers who steadfastly manned their positions throughout the night. Originally when starting to write this report, the list of names to thank kept growing so at the risk of forgetting anyone it is generic. The people that very unselfishly step up to volunteer when help is needed is why this Club THRIVES. Talk about success!!! Great Specials DECEMBER 19, 2018-5:00 PM TO 8:00 PM The Hill at Muza 379 Congress Street, Troy, NY Come join us for an especially spirited happy hour! $5 Half Liter House Beers (Euro & USA) - $7 Wines $9 Half Liter of Beer and Kielbasa Roll OR Pretzel Bites $3.00 Hill Popcorn - $6 Pretzel Bites - $6 Kielbasa Roll Don t miss out on the complementary door prize of TWO $50.00 Gift Certificates Tickets will be drawn at 7:00pm You gotta be there to win!!!

MARKETING Fred Haefeli Marketing Director marketing@ocskiclub.org WOW what a great Applicant party. Beside a great big thanks to Arlene & Erin, A&E Chairpersons, plus our Membership Committee crew, Gretchen, Amy & Pat, I need to thank all the vendors who graciously donated the great give-aways we had this year. As I announced there was over $3,100 in prizes. A crazy number. THANK YOU!!! Another big event we do. In the meantime get some turns in soon if you haven t already ridden a bus with the OC s. Who wants a FREE MEMBERSHIP for next year? Ask me or others about the OC referral program. Yes, you can truly get a free membership. This is NOT fake news. OC SECRETARY Kathy Howard OC Board Meeting Highlights November 1, 2018 Meeting Highlights The Board Meeting was held on Thursday, November 1, 2018. Here is a summary of what took place. Complete minutes are found on the website. Upcoming events were discussed. You can find this information elsewhere in this Liftline or on the website. Ski Trips: An April Jay Peaks trip is in negotiation. See the updated trips schedule for availability and opening dates in this newsletter or on the website. The NYCDSC DISCOUNT lift ticket list is out. Check the website for this. Every OC member is a NYCDSC member as well. Discounted lift tickets are negotiated at many area mountains for certain dates throughout the ski season. Members can buy 1 ticket at the ticket booth by showing their OC membership card on these days. Check it out. The Day Bus Ski Schedule is out. Check in this newsletter or online for further info. The October 28th bus was a no-go due to lack of sign-ups. However, 8 members did ski and said it was good. The 2019 Volley Ball tournament was discussed. We need more members to volunteer for this fundraising event! The funds from this event help us subsidize ski buses. Without these funds, membership fees may need to increase. A committee was formed to look in how we can improve participation. Gail Marotti-Hossan will chair the committee. Next meeting is December 6th. Members are welcome to attend the meeting.

AS THE SKI TURNS Jeff Kenton OC Snowsports School SKI & SNOWBOARD TUNING CLINIC- Back again by popular demand, there will be a ski care and tuning clinic on Thursday January 17 at the PCC 6:00 PM Sharp. Learn everything from simple de-burring to beveling edges, base repair, and hot waxing. You will learn how to determine when the skis need attention and how to do it yourself,if you wish. OC FAMILY CORNER Sylvia Haefeli Family Committee Chair The season has started and the buses are going. Remember that family, 7-17 yrs, is welcome on every Sunday bus as well as certain buses scheduled during school holidays. The Alpine bus schedule is in this issue and also on the website: OCSkiclub.org. Already Membership has issued 33 Junior ID cards this season and more are expected. It is only $5 and comes laminated. If you plan to take advantage of the Ski Club Member Discount Days (SCM Dis. Days), then each person including each child will need a card. It is one lift ticket per card at most ski areas. Just a few will honor one card for a whole family. Maple Ridge and West Mountain ATTENTION - ALL SKIERS, SNOWBOARDERS, MEMBERS, PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS: A common thread in the OC Ski Club is that we all share that passion for skiing and snowboarding. One of the benefits of becoming part of this club is the professional quality coaching available through OC Snowsports School at no charge. Morning sessions are conducted in a very casual manner on all Sunday and most weekday bus trips. Sign-ups and groupings take place on the bus ride to the mountain. We do entertain requests. It is a fantastic opportunity to get a guided tour of the mountain, meet new friends and get some good feedback on your own personal skiing. We are a PSIA Certified Snowsports will honor one card. I have sent copies of our membership cards to Snow Ridge, Attitash, and Wild Cat Mountains. They have the cards on record. If any mountain says they need the card(s) on record, I can send them out. Just let me know. I will be adding days to the SCM Dis. Days. Jay Peak is still setting theirs up. Windham, Mad River, Smuggler s Notch and Royal have not replied as yet. Okemo and Stowe are not offering Discount Days this season. As I get days, I will edit the schedule on our Website. I will also send out updates via email to everyone on the Family Email list. You can sign up by going to the Website and entering your name. The Smuggler s Notch trip is filling up fast. Eileen and Jamie tell me they have over 100 signed up as of Nov 8. They are planning on having the usual Sat. night dinner in the hallway like last year. More about that as we get closer to the trip. Greg Bockis and Dave Simonian will be running the Jay Trip, April 5-7. The contract is signed. The trip will open School. More than 80% of our instructors have attained a level of PSIA certification. Advanced notice is appreciated for any sessions involving children,first-timers and snowboarders. Telemark and Glade Skiing are also options. Any Questions? Stop by our table at any meeting. 2019 PRIVATE LESSON DAYS: Sunday, January 27 Sunday, February 24 Sunday, March 24 this month. There will be rooms at both the Hotel Jay next to the Water Park and Stateside. Pick your partners and sign up for one great trip. I was at Killington last weekend (Nov. 10-11) and the mountain is blowing show everywhere. I assume Mt. Snow, Stratton, Magic, and Bromley are doing the same. Even West Mountain will have the guns going on cold days and nights. In other words, the season is well underway. Get out those boards, sharpen your edges, clean your boots, charge up the batteries and get out there. Just remember to wear your helmet, button up that jacket and stay warm. The Fun has started. See you on the bus or slope. ALPINE BUS COMMITTEE Let It Snow is our motto and see you on the bus is our favorite greeting. That pretty well sums up our job. The buses will roll and we hope everyone will join us for a great day on the slopes. By now we have run buses on Sunday and will start our Friday buses started to Mount Snow on November 30. The most important job you have is sign up and be sure your name tag is on your equipment even that boot strap you use to bring your boots on the bus. Put your name and phone number on everything, your ski bag, boot bag, loose skis cooler, whatever. That way we can return it to you quickly. That makes our job so much easier. For those new to the OC Ski Club, stop by our table to pick up Cliff Notes. We have written out on one page everything you need to know about riding the bus. You can also access them on the website under Alpine Buses. Just remember, we DO NOT CANCEL buses due to weather. We roll rain, snow, sleet, and sunshine. Warm temps or cold ones, we go. Conditions at the mountain are never the same as in Albany. It will rain here but snow on the mountain. Lots of lovely powder snow for you to play in. If you have a friend who wants to learn to ski, tell us ahead of time so we can arrange for a Never Ever Package for them. It will include rentals, a lesson with mountain staff and a lower mountain lift ticket. We just need time to arrange for it or visit Jeff at our ski school and arrange for one with our instructors. When you sign up for the bus, indicate if you Lynda Heaney, Mark Wilder, Sylvia Haefeli need rentals skiing or snowboard package. We can get that too. Just bring the CASH on the bus to pay for it. We don t accept credit cards or checks on the bus. We do get special pricing if you rent through the Club. You can reserve your seat on the bus by paying at a meeting OR going to our website and pay with PayPal (you DO NOT have to be a PAYPAL account holder, use a credit card to pay) or once you start riding the bus, pay for a seat on a future bus on the ride home. If you want a drive up lift ticket you must pay for those in cash at a meeting or meet the bus at one of our two stops and give the money to the bus leader. We do not accept money at the ski area for lift tickets. See you on the bus! Important sunday Ski Bus Information: Buses will arrive at the 1st pick-up location ½ hour before departure time. Buses depart PROMPTLY on time at 6:30 AM. Those catching the bus at the 1st pick-up location should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to departure to allow adequate time to load your equipment on the bus. IMPORTANT: Please note that the 2nd pick-up is basically a stop en route and does NOT have a specified departure time. Once all of the passengers and equipment have been loaded at the 2nd pick-up, the buses will leave promptly. USE OF COUPONS FOR ALPINE BUS RIDES: Meetings: Accept cash or oc coupons Day Bus Trips future sign ups on the bus: Accept cash or coupon. PayPal is the only way to reserve a seat online. 3 SATURDAY HAPPY HOUR BUSES: Gore Mountain / Tannery Pub - January 12th, 2019 Pico Mountain / Last Run Lounge - February 9th, 2019 Mount Snow / Pond Skimming and Live Band at the Base Lodge - March 23rd, 2019 THE BUS WILL STAY AT THE MOUTAIN UNTIL 7 PM!

CROSS COUNTRY TRAILS Barbara Sorrell - Cross Country Chair Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, Silver white winters that melt into Springs, These are a few of my favorite things We hope to try a few new XC locations this year. We re thinking about bringing back an end of season trip to Mohonk House in April with the unbelievable buffet. Consideration is being given to a few impromptu evening XC meet-ups; i.e., Cole s Woods in Queensbury and Pineridge in Petersburgh. Plus, we could always do something radical like run an XC bus in December! Holiday shopping or baking all of those holiday treats that stuff can wait another day. Take a page out of my book - c mon out and play in the snow with the OC XC Gang. THe XC Schedule is on next page! SOLD OUT! Craftsbury VT Nordic Center in March Dates: Friday, 3/8/19 - Sunday, 3/10/19 Trip Opens: Thursday, 11/1/18, 7pm Trip Price: $163.50 Standard Package Minimum (10) Sign-ups Required by 11/21/18, including deposit. We need to turn this around quickly due to room availability. Interested in something other than the standard Cedar Lodge double occupancy? Let s talk. Trip Leader: Barbara Sorrell ocxcskiing@ocskiclub.org

ORGANIZED SKIING Matt Quackenbush Vice President for Organized Skiing AS THE SKI CARVES The buses are running, the snow is the best we have ever seen in November. I skied with the club on the last two Sundays (11/18 - Killington and 11/25 Mt. Snow). It was great fun. It was a great group of old and new members. And the snow was great. It s time to get on the bus. Trips are selling fast, if you are interested, don t wait. Some of our best trips are still available. One of my favorites is New Hampshire. It is still selling and since I have been on this trip every year we have run it, I am a huge fan. Slots are still available for Sunday River. It s another deal you cannot pass up. As I write this, Utah still has spots, but don t hesitate. Don t forget our late season trips to Bolton Valley and Jay Peak. Keep in mind, even though a trip may have filled up we always take names for a waiting list and many slots are filled every year from waiting lists. Ski instruction is in full swing. With the buses running, we are also offering our great instruction on every bus. Our coaches are the best and this is a value that you cannot pass up. Also, check out our upcoming Private Lesson days. Check with Jeff Kenton at any meeting to get on the Private Lesson list. Lastly, a special thanks to all the people who made our recent recruiting events great: The Snow Expo staff, the Warren Miller Staff and the New Member/ Applicant Party staff. None of it could have been done without the diligent efforts of our membership team (Gretchen, Pat and Amy). Please stop by and thank them.

Bolton Valley? A new adventure awaits you! Bolton Valley is the highest zip code in New England at elevation 2200 feet, with surrounding peaks ranging from 3200 to the summit of Bolton Mountain at 3,650. Located midway between Burlington and Montpelier Vermont, Bolton Valley is set amidst 5,000 acres of Vermont's most spectacular Green Mountain vistas. Bolton Valley has the highest base elevation of any Vermont ski resort, which means they get more snow, more often. Yes, Bolton Valley is not a huge ski area but with 71 trails it is comparable to Pico 57 trails, Bromley 47 trails, Smuggler s Notch 78 trails. Bolton Valley still maintains the small ski resort charm. Night skiing - Most backyard activities stop once the sun goes down. Bolton Valley keeps the lights on and offers more night skiing/riding than any other Vermont ski area. We light up for night skiing and riding on 10 trails, served by four lifts every Tuesday through Saturday night until 10pm. Backcountry Tours (additional cost) - For Backcountry adventurers, the Bolton Backcountry is second to none in the Eastern States, with 1500 acres of beautiful terrain right out of the gates, and even more beyond as it links to the Mount Mansfield State Forest, making it the largest wilderness area in the Vermont State Forests. With the most accessible and extensive backcountry terrain in the Northeast, this program makes Bolton Valley the perfect destination for skiers and riders looking to explore beyond lift-service, as well as cross-country skiers looking to access more aggressive terrain. Visitors will have the opportunity to safely explore thousands of acres of high-mountain wilderness terrain, while learning the ins and outs of alpine touring, backcountry safety, and selfreliance. Terrain Parks Bolton Valley offers with three terrain parks with differing degrees of difficulty. All are easily accessible from the Snowflake lift. Cross Country Skiing - Bolton's 100-kilometer Nordic trail system offers terrain for skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts of all levels, with 15 kilometers of groomed trails. A 1 st Friday Bus to Remember On almost every Lift ride, someone exclaimed, Can you believe this much snow in November! The November 30th bus to Mt. Snow carried 40+ OCers to a winter wonderland. With Mt. Snow s amazing snow making and Mother Natures more amazing 22 of light powder, it was a dream come true. There were groomed slopes and ungroomed freshies. We skied the trees! Between the trees, were mounds of white powder without a trace of earth. And at the end of the day, OCers met in the bar and shared November stories (and a few toasts). We were tired but very happy. We had quite a few new members on the Friday bus. We hope you all felt welcome. We were glad to have you with us. MORE PHOTOS ON BACK COVER! Destination Family Friendly?
