2016 MAC Tournament 2 ON TAP Miami makes its return to the MAC Tournament after failing to qualify in 2015. The RedHawks enter the postseason as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 Central Michigan at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Miami will then go to battle against either Western Michigan or Ball State on Thursday. The Red & White will be aiming for their fourth title in program history and their first since 2005. The double elimination tournament concludes on Sunday. Each game will be broadcasted live via the MAC Baseball Tournament Central page. A live stats link will be available there as well and on MiamiRedHawks.com. SCOUTING REPORT ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN: After a slow start to the season, the Chippewas have been much more consistent of late as they come in to the tournament winners of their final three MAC series. Central Michigan secured the sixth seed when they won the series finale over Western Michigan after splitting the first two this past weekend. At the plate, the Chips are led by Zach McKinstry (.342) and Daniel Jipping (.308). The duo has combined for 36 extra base hits, 64 runs batted in, 138 hits and and 81 runs scored. On the mound, reliever Jordan Grosjean has made a team-high 24 appearances and his 3.21 ERA is the ninth-best in the MAC. In terms of its starting pitching, Miami is likely to see either Nick Deeg or Sean Renzi. Deeg has 14 starts in 2016 and carries a 4.35 ERA and a 3-7 record. Additionally, his 78 strikeouts is third-most in the conference. Renzi has made 18 appearances, ten of which were starts. He has a 5-6 record with a 4.36 ERA. He narrowly trails Deeg with 71 punchouts on the year. LAST MEETING: The RedHawks last saw the Chippewas in their penultimate regular season series. After winning the opener, Miami went on to drop the final two. One swing was the difference in both losees. Central Michigan leads the all-time series, 68-44. MIAMI VS. 2016 MAC Tournament 3 TRIPLE PARTY The RedHawks rank second in the MAC in triples. That stat is no surprise considering Miami s personnel. Senior Jake Romano has three on the year and 14 for his career, placing him just four behind Adam Eaton for the most in program history. Romano s classmate, Chad Sedio, trails narrowly behind with 13 (three this season), which is fourth-most all-time among RedHawks. Junior Steve Sada is also on the radar with four this season and is tied for sixth all-time with 11. Senior Gary Russo has also chipped in three in 2016. SURGING SEDIO After carrying a.192 batting average just under a month into the season, senior Chad Sedio has remained one of Miami s most consistent and clutch hitters over the course of this season. The shortstop has worked his way up to a.273 batting average after hitting.600 (6-for-10) last week. He is also hitting.311 in conference play and is currently ridding a nine-game hit streak. Sedio is the first RedHawk since Adam Eaton (2010) to record 10-plus home runs and stolen bases in a single season. HITTING HAFFEY Redshirt sophomore Ross Haffey has started all 53 games at first base and leads the team with a.368 batting average, a mark that also ranks him third in the MAC. Also leads the team with 29 extra base hits. Has reached base safely in 51 of the team s 53 games and has at least one hit in 46 of those. From Feb. 20 to March 26, Haffey was on a season-long 19-game hitting streak before being held to an 0-for-3 performance in the series finale against Ball State. RUSSO RAKING Senior Gary Russo is ranked sixth in the nation in total home runs with 18. He now has 30 for his career, placing fifth all-time in program history. Russo s 18 homers just in 2016 is the third-most in a single season in the Red & White. MAC PRESEASON COACHES POLL EAST 1. Kent State - 63 points (9) 2. Ohio - 55 points (2) 3. Over the course of the team s first 20 games, Miami hurlers allowed an average of 9.1 runs per game. In the last 28 outings, they have allowed just 3.9 runs per game. To put into perspective just how young the Red & White pitching staff is, of the 53 games played, 48 of those have been started by a freshman (36) or sophomore (12). MIAMI BASEBALL GETS NEW HOME Funded entirely through the private support of Miami Baseball s alumni and friends, the team was able to move into their brand new facility in September. The Jay Hayden Baseball Center is a 10,000 square-foot facility that features a coaches office suite, a locker room, players lounge, training room and much more. The building sits along Hayden Park s left field line and is attached to both the existing hitting facility and home bullpen. A tunnel also allows for field access for Miami during its games. The facility is a product of the ongoing Graduating Champions campaign by Miami Athletics. www.miamiredhawks.com

2016 MAC Tournament 4 Head Coach Danny Hayden Third Season Xavier, 2008 Career Record at Miami: 69-93 (43-35 MAC) Danny Hayden enters his third year as the head coach of Miami Baseball in 2016. Hayden brought some hardware to Oxford in his first year at the helm of the Miami University baseball program in 2014. The RedHawks posted a 30-27 overall record and took home the Mid-American Conference East Division title with an 18-9 mark in conference play. Both records were MU s best since the 2011 campaign while the MAC East crown was the program s first since the 2005 season. Hayden is the second coach in program history to claim a MAC overall or division title in his first season. Miami boasted a balanced lineup that finished second in the MAC with a.284 average. Eight RedHawk regulars hit.284 or higher, including five batters with a.305 or higher average. The RedHawks also boasted two weekend starters (Seth Varner and Ryan Powers) who heard their names called in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in June. Both of those hurlers earned All-MAC honors with Varner becoming the first Miami pitcher to win MAC Pitcher of the Year and Powers getting placed on the All-MAC Second Team. Additionally, two position players earned spots on the All- MAC team in senior third baseman Dan Walsh (First Team) and freshman second baseman Steve Sada (Second Team). Hayden was named Miami s 16th head baseball coach by Director of Athletics David Saylor on July 23, 2013. It is a proud day for Miami Athletics to welcome Danny Hayden as our new baseball coach, said Sayler. The familiarity and passion that Danny brings to Miami will move our program forward quickly, and I know we have hired a rising star in the coaching ranks. Miami has been and will always be a place that I care deeply about, Hayden said. My passion for this institution will drive me to see that Miami Baseball lives up to the expectation set by all the great people that have been here before me. I am eager to work with our young men as they embrace the challenge of returning Miami to a championship level. Hayden came to Miami after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Xavier University. At Xavier, Hayden coached all aspects of hitting and offense--coordinating practice plans for both offense and defense on a daily basis--while overseeing other areas of the program such as travel and academics. He worked closely with 2011 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Ben Thomas in his first season with the Musketeers. During Hayden s Xavier tenure, three players advanced to the professional level, while six Musketeers earned allconference honors and five earned academic all-conference accolades. In both 2011 and 2013, his offense cracked the program s top 10 list for hits and doubles, while also notching a top 10 mark in runs scored in 2011. I am really excited for Danny and the Miami baseball program, said Xavier Head Baseball Coach Scott Googins, a former assistant coach at Miami. He did an unbelievable job for Xavier and is going to be missed tremendously. It is a great opportunity for him to build on the Miami baseball tradition. Hayden is no stranger to Miami, playing for the RedHawks as a freshman in 2004 and also serving on the staff from 2008-10. Hayden spent two years on the Miami staff, serving as the director of baseball operations for the 2009 season and as a volunteer assistant coach the following year. During his Miami stint, Hayden worked closely with the coaching staff and had a hand in all facets of the program while serving as the first base coach. Miami University is a special place with a special culture, both from an academic and athletic standpoint; and I think Miami got a coach who understands that unique culture better than anyone, said Arizona State Head Baseball Coach Tracy Smith, who was the head coach at Miami from 1997-2005. Danny has been around Miami University and elite amateur baseball his entire life, and it is going to be fun to watch him use this to his advantage as he continues to build on Miami s rich baseball tradition. From 2008 to 2010, Hayden was an assistant coach with the Midland Redskins, helping guide the nationally-prominent Seven NCAA Regional Appearances summer league program to two national championships and one runner-up finish. During his three-year stretch on the Midland staff, Hayden coached 27 players who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft, including four first-round picks. As an undergraduate, Hayden was a catcher on the 2004 RedHawk team that produced 36 wins, including a 14-8 Mid-American Conference record, and captured the MAC East Division title. Hayden played his final three seasons at Xavier where he served as captain of the 2008 team that seized the Atlantic 10 regularseason championship. He was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 47th round of the 2008 MLB draft. Hayden, a Cincinnati native who graduated from McNicholas High School, earned his bachelor s degree from Xavier in 2008.
