Martinez each homered and had two hits in the loss. Austin Jackson also added two hits with a RBI. Drew Smyly started for the Tigers, but did not factor into the decision after allowing four runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Joakim Soria took the loss for Detroit, giving up a run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts in 1.0 inning. The Tigers continue their six-game homestand tonight as they begin a three-game series vs. Colorado. Following the series against the Rockies, the Tigers start a nine-game road trip, which begins on Monday with a four-game series vs. the Yankees. The road trip also includes three games at Toronto and two games at Pittsburgh. PRICE ACQUIRED FROM TAMPA BAY: The Tigers announced yesterday that the club has acquired lefthanded pitcher David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Drew Smyly, outfielder Austin Jackson and infielder Willy Adames. Price, 28, has compiled an 11-8 record, a 3.11 ERA (170.2IP/59ER) and 189 strikeouts in 23 starts with the Rays this season. Opponents are hitting.238 (156x655) against him this season, while he has issued 23 walks. Price currently leads the American League with 189 strikeouts and 170.2 innings pitched, while he is third with an 8.22 SO/BB ratio, fifth with 9.97 strikeouts per nine innings pitched and tied for sixth with 11 wins. Price was selected to the 2014 American League All-Star Team, marking his fourth career selection. ROSTER UPDATE: The Tigers have announced the following roster moves: - Following yesterday s game, the Tigers optioned the contract of lefthanded pitcher Ian Krol to Triple A Toledo. - The Tigers recalled the injury rehab assignment of lefthanded pitcher Patrick McCoy and activated him from the disabled list. McCoy made four rehab assignments with Triple A Toledo and had a 6.75 ERA (5.1IP/4ER) with six hits allowed and five strikeouts. He had been sidelined since July 6 with a pulled right hamstring. - The Tigers purchased the contract of outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from Triple A Toledo. Carrera played in 97 games for the Mud Hens and hit.307 (115x374) with 15 doubles, five triples, six home runs, 41 RBI and 43 stolen bases. PLENTY OF HARDWARE TO GO AROUND: With the acquisition of David Price, the Tigers now have the last three Cy Young Award winners (Max Scherzer, 2013, David Price, 2012 and Justin Verlander, 2011). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the sixth time in American League history a team has had three Cy Young winners at the same time and the first time since the Red Sox in 2001 (David Cone, Pedro Martinez and Bret Saberhagen). WRAPPING UP THE MONTH OF JULY: The Tigers finished the month of July with a 13-13 record, marking the 14th straight month the Tigers have posted a.500 or better record. As a team, the Tigers hit.282 (247x876) in July, while the pitching staff had a 4.05 ERA (229.0IP/103ER). The Tigers offense led the AL in batting average and ranked second in runs scored (125) in the month of July. TORII, J.D. GO BACK TO BACK: Torii Hunter and J.D. Martinez hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning of yesterday s game. It marked the fifth time this season the Tigers have hit back-to-back homers and the first time since June 25 at Texas when Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez hit back-to-back home runs. HUNTER RACKED UP THE RBI IN JULY: Torii Hunter had one RBI in yesterday s game and finished the month of July with 24 RBI. Hunter s 24 RBI last month were the second most in the American League, trailing only Boston s David Ortiz, who had 25 RBI in July. INTERLEAGUE HAPPENINGS: The Tigers are 6-4 in Interleague Play this season after going 3-1 vs. Los Angeles, 1-2 vs. San Diego and 2-1 vs. Arizona. Since Interleague Play began in 1997, the Tigers have posted a 170-143 record. AMONG THE BEST IN INTERLEAGUE PLAY SINCE 2006: The Tigers have compiled a 99-57 record, a.635 winning percentage, during Interleague Play since the start of the 2006 season. The.635 winning percentage during Interleague action is second-best among major league clubs during that stretch, trailing only Boston, which has compiled a 104-54 record, a.658 winning percentage, during Interleague games over that stretch. TIGERS TIDBITS: Phil Coke pitched a scoreless eighth inning in yesterday s game and has compiled a 2.70 ERA (20.0IP/6ER) over his last 15 outings...yesterday s attendance of 41,306 marked the 15th sellout crowd of the season for the Tigers. TIGERS AT THE TOP IN HITTING: The Tigers currently lead the American League with a.277 team batting average. Individually, Victor Martinez ranks third in the American League with a.324 (113x349) batting average and Miguel Cabrera is tied for fifth with a.313 (124x396) batting average. LAST TIME OUT: Verlander recorded his 13th quality start of the season on Saturday against the Angels, but took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
