SEASON REVIEW The 2005-06 season was another successful campaign for the Indiana wrestling team, which made its 13th straight trip to the NCAA Championships under head coach Duane Goldman s leadership. The Hoosiers wrapped up the season with an 18th-place finish at the national championships, and saw 125-pounder Joe Dubuque bring home his second consecutive national title for IU. The Hoosiers finished the dual season with an 11-6 record and a 2-6 mark in Big Ten meets. IU finished off a perfect 9-0 non-conference dual meet season, including a championship at the Virginia Duals in January. The Hoosiers 11-0 start was the best since 1995-96, when IU started 12-0 in dual meets. Indiana opened its schedule at the Missouri Open, where nine different wrestlers placed in the event. Brady Richardson brought home the Hoosiers lone win at the Open at 197 pounds, but Dave Herman placed second in the heavyweight division and three others Jose Escobedo (125 pounds), Andrae Hernandez (133) and Justin Curran (184) turned in third-place finishes. The Hoosiers followed that up with a first-place finish at the Mat Town Invitational on Nov. 26. IU s Dubuque (125), Matt Cooper (149) and Brandon Becker (157) took home titles, and the Hoosiers managed to place wrestlers in every weight class aside from 174 pounds. Hernandez, Richardson and Herman were runners-up in their respective weight classes. The dual season opened for the Hoosiers on Saturday, Dec. 10, as IU hosted the Hoosier Duals. Indiana came away dual champions after topping Eastern Illinois (36-3) and Gardner Webb (37-3). The Hoosiers had three different wrestlers record falls on the day, led by Becker s pin of EIU s Tyler Williams in 32 seconds. Dubuque totaled 12 dual points for IU. Joe Dubuque finished a stellar IU career with a 28-1 record and his second national championship at 125. Indiana posted its second dual championship in a row on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the FITE Duals in Park Forrest, Ill. The Hoosiers dominated Northern Illinois (28-9) and Southern Illinois (37-12) before dismantling Wisconsin-Whitewater 45-4. Marc Bennett went 3-0 on the day, pinning SIU s Dan Midgett and UWW s Adam Moe and recording a 9-7 decision over 19th-ranked Danny Burk. The Hoosiers closed out 2005 at the Midlands Championships, coming away with an eighth-place finish in Evanston. Richardson led IU with a thirdplace finish, while Becker (fourth), Hernandez (fifth), Max Dean (sixth) and Curran (seventh) all placed for IU. Illinois came away with a first-place finish at the event. IU opened the new year at the Virginia Duals, and the Hoosiers went 4-0 in Norfolk to come away as dual champions. Indiana opened the duals with wins over Virginia Tech (40-13) and Bloomsburg (42-0) on Saturday, Jan. 14, then followed that up with victories over Chattanooga (29-11) and Penn (18-15) on Sunday, Jan. 15, to take the title. Against the Hokies, the Hoosiers recorded falls by Dubuque, Hernandez and Becker, and added 10 points on technical falls by Richardson and Dean to register 13 of their 16 bonus points in the match as the Hoosiers went 7-3 on the match. Indiana followed that up with a shutout of Bloomsburg in the second round of the duals, where Bennett and Richardson tallied falls as IU picked up 12 bonus points in the meet. Indiana opened day two of the duals with a 29-11 victory over Chattanooga. The Hoosiers fell behind 8-6 after Chattanooga got a pair of major decisions at 133 and 141. But IU took 23 of the match s final 26 points to run away with the victory. Against Penn, the Hoosiers saw their stiffest competition of the non-conference schedule, but rallied from a 15-9 deficit with two wrestlers to go, when Richardson pinned Jack Sullivan in 1:07 to tie the match. Dave Herman finished off Penn with a 3-2 decision over Paul Velekie to give IU its ninth dual victory of the year. The Hoosiers began the Big Ten season with victories over Ohio State (31-7) and Purdue (24-13) to drive the dual victory streak to 11 meets. Dubuque, Hernandez, Becker, Dean, Bennett, Richardson and Herman all went 2-0 over the two meets, with Bennett and Hernandez leading the way with nine dual points apiece. IU faced the top three teams in the conference over the next three meets, and Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota each came away with dual victories over the Hoosiers. Dubuque and Hernandez each went 3-0 over the three-meet stretch, but the only IU wrestler to register dual points was Richardson, who posted a major decision against Iowa s Dan Erekson and a decision over Minnesota s Mitch Kuhlman. Indiana finished off the Big Ten season with three more losses, but the Hoosiers and Northwestern saw one of the closest meets of the conference slate, with NU emerging with a 19-15 victory. Each squad won five matches, but the Wildcats gained four bonus points, three coming on a fall by then-no. 2 Jake Herbert. At the Big Ten Tournament, IU placed five wrestlers for a total of 43.5 points. Dubuque and Max Dean finished 2005-06 with a 26-16 record and a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships in the 165-pound class. Becker highlighted the Hoosier effort with thirdplace finishes, while Dean placed fifth, Hernandez sixth and Herman seventh. Dubuque s bid for an undefeated season ended in the third round of the 125-pound division with a 5-4 loss to Kyle Ott of Illinois, but the senior rebounded with a pair of wins to finish third in the conference. Becker was defeated in the first round by Iowa s Joe Johnston before winning his final four matches to take third in the event. The five Hoosiers who placed at Big Tens moved on to the NCAA Tournament, where Dubuque won five matches by decision to bring home his second straight national championship at 125. Dubuque topped Penn s Michael Silengo, Hofstra s David Thomasette, Central Michigan s Luke Smith and Oklahoma s Sam Hazewinkel to move on to the national championship bout. It marked the second year in a row that Dubuque stopped Hazewinkel s bid for a national title. In the finals, Dubuque registered his most lopsided victory of the tourney, besting Cornell s Troy Nickerson 8-3. Becker took a first-round major decision over Drexel s Ryan Hluschak 11-0, but was topped in the second round by Lehigh s Derek Zinck 8-6. Becker won his next three matches to give him a chance for a top-four finish, but for the second straight year he was derailed in his quest by Iowa State s Trent Paulson. Becker finished off the NCAAs with a 9-4 victory over Wisconsin s Craig Henning to earn his second consecutive All-America selection with a seventh-place finish. Herman and Dean each won a pair of matches at NCAAs, but did not place in the event. The Hoosiers finished 18th overall with 35 points, as Oklahoma State won its second consecutive national championship with 122.5. Dubuque wrapped up his final IU campaign with a 28-1 overall record, tying Herman (28-16) and Hernandez (28-11) for most wins on the squad. Dean (26-16), Richardson (24-8) and Curran (20-14) each registered 20-win seasons for the Hoosiers. 36 2006-07 WRESTLING

JOE DUBUQUE Joe Dubuque became the first Hoosier in history to win back-to-back National Championships in wrestling. He followed up a 29-3 junior campaign with a 28-1 senior campaign en route to his second selection as a first-team All-American. When Dubuque won his 2005 National Championship, he became the Hoosiers first national champ since Brian Dolph, who was a 1990 champion in the 150-pound division. His second straight national title made him the first two-time champion for IU since Charlie McDaniel, who took home titles in 1935 and 1938 in the heavyweight division. Dubuque finished his career with an overall record of 114-18, 19-6 in Big Ten duals, and totaled 20 pins in his career. His 114 wins rank him sixth alltime among Hoosiers. His final season was likely his finest, as he was defeated only once, that coming on a 5-4 decision at the hands of Illinois Kyle Ott in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. That loss snapped a streak of 28 straight wins for the Bloomfield, N.J., native, who did not lose from March 6, 2005 to April 6, 2006. Dubuque then dispatched his next seven opponents, five at the NCAA Tournament, to finish his career having won 35 of his final 36 matches. It s obviously a great accomplishment and lot of teamwork between individuals, head coach Duane Goldman said of Dubuque s championships. It s a long, hard road and he obviously had the talent to get the job done coming into college, but even with that he had a lot of development to make to succeed. Winning the first title was great, but to win the second one was really an accomplishment. His weight class was tough, and he really had to be head and shoulders above the competition, and to get that done, his second title was very impressive.
