COACHES: the MEN BEHIND the MEN Lorin Miller, respectble mn, is hed coch for the gret George Fox bsketbll tem with Rich Allen s ssistnt coch. These two likeble men hve difficult job to perform. They hve to tke eleven tlented college plyers nd hve them perform t their extreme best for forty exhusting minutes on the bsketbll court. Coch Miller hs to strt working with these individul bll hndlers severl months before the bsketbll seson strts. They my ll be good bll plyers, but some of them my ply livelier bsketbll on certin section of the court thn others. Now the problem the confused coches hve t this point is finding out which plyer rects quicker nd more consistent t which position on the court. After the coches rech the conclusion s to who plys where nd when, the extremely ptient coch hs to work with the tem until it performs s one body. Then the coch must build up confidence within the dedicted plyers. The only wy confidence cn be reched is by tlking with the tem, complimenting them on their gret efforts nd letting the plyers know tht it's ment, or you could just reverse this ide nd scre them to deth. Before the bsketbll gmes Coch Miller lwys hs wht you might cll pep tlk. Wht would coch sy in smll rp session like this? Mybe you might her something like, "Alright tem, if you don't win this gme you're going to hve one of the most exhusting workouts ever tomorrow," or "You rotten bums, you know if you win you go to the NAIA ply-offs." These re just couple of short sentences you might her in bsketbll pep tlk. Minds. Wht goes through coch's rotting mind? It's extremely rough to sy unless you hve been coch. Imgine your hed in close gme by five points with ten crucil minutes left to ply in the gme. The ref blows his whistle. The gme stops. The mn with the whistle between his teeth points t your key mn in the gme. The tempered coch jumps off the bench. The buzzer sounds signling five fouls ginst your mn. By the time the disgusted coch is seted on the bench, he is either disppointed with the performnce of his plyer, or he is ruthlessly md t the ref for mking pitiful cll. Coch Miller's mind is in continuous motion throughout the entire gme, becuse he is constntly giving signls to the tem. He hs to keep the tem from becoming unorgnized, which could hppen t ny time in the gme. Coches Miller nd Allen (L to R) re enjoying wtching the Bruins hed on to nother victory. The gme is over. It ws won by one point. The overjoyed tem heds to the locker room. The coch is congrtulting his excited plyers s they re wlking to the showers. GEORGE FOX COLLEGE BASKETBALL by Mrtin Lmbert Refs, you crusted socks, don't you ever open your eyes? "Wht ws tht George?" I sid "if I don't see 'em 111 mke 'em up." REFS: the FORGOTTEN MEN At the unforgettble George Fox College bsketbll gmes there re lwys two men who re quite forgettble. Or you might tend to hope so. These forgettble men trot up nd down the court in their zebr-striped shirts s if they own the plce. There is nother wy in which you cn tell the forgotten men from the bsketbll plyers, they lwys hve silver whistle between their teeth, but this is probbly so they won't complin to one nother bout their sore feet. It seems like every time ref blows his high-pitched whistle, ll the plyers turn towrd him nd look t him with confused fces. The noisy crowd becomes louder, nd the coches lep off their gluteus mximumuses into the ir like jcks-in--box. All this chos comes becuse the mn in zebr-striped shirt coughed nd forgot he hd whistle in his orl cvity. Refs hve to et up bits of unneeded criticism from the ruthless George Fox crowd. Crowds everywhere hve just bout the sme comments to throw t the refs - comments like, "Ref, pull your hed out," or "Ref, your eyes re crossed." These re just couple of the common criticisms thrown t the refs, but nybody who is out to ridicule the refs lwys hs his own personl compliments for the forgotten men. PEP BAND: the SOUNDS BEYOND the CROWD The sounds of extreme excitement t George Fox bsketbll gmes is expressed in mny different wys, such s the exciting sounds produced by the pep bnd. The George Fox College pep bnd consists of severl brss instruments, reed instruments, set of percussion instruments, severl blowhrds, nd little drummer boy. The pep bnd does prctice once in while. SPECTATORS: the SPIRIT BEHIND BASKETBALL Specttors. Who re they? At George Fox they re overexcited students. Did I sy over-excited? I didn't men to underestimte them. Specttors ren't limited to Fox students. There's high school, elementry, nd preschoolers. And the older genertion lso ttends. Mr. Webster defines "rlly," "to summon or to bring together for common purpose." Mr. Webster's definition is fir one nd the GFC spirited rlly squd lives up to this. They unite for one common purpose: to crete spirit throughout the entire school so tht when crowds gther t the bsketbll gme they re redy to "drown out" the other tem with spirited sounds. The rlly squd consists of five femles nd four mles. This group of young men nd women hs done fntstic job, not only t the gmes but with the gret mount of time nd effort put forth in developing their routines, nd, I must sy, they're the most originl routines I hve ever seen. Usully when you go to bsketbll gme you her the sme rotten yells other squds use: "Let's go tem, let's fight tem, let's win, win, win," or something similr. If the gme isn't exciting you're going to be in sorry shpe with boring cheerleders. The George Fox rlly squd is different. The members hve crzy yells in which they move up nd down the court like locomotive, plus others. Every time George Fox plys wy, the rlly squd is there, if there is ny possible wy to get there.
