Play-by-play man Andy Garcia, now in his third year, will be on the call for the Huskies this season and is joined by former Huskie assistant coach Ethel Gregory during home games. Fans can also follow the team on Facebook and Twitter. Like on Facebook and follow and on Twitter. Gameday updates and scores from all women s basketball games can be found @NIUscores. REMATCH - THE HUSKIES AND THE BULLS Saturday s matchup will be the second meeting this season between Northern Illinois and Buffalo, the first time this season NIU has played an opponent twice in 2013-14. The game will also be the 20th contest between the two teams with the Huskies leadinng the all-time series 13-6 against the Bulls. In the first meeting this season at the NIU Convocation Center, NIU only trailed UB by one point at halftime, 24-23, but were outscored in the second period, 39-29, to fall in the contest, 63-52. Junior Jenna Thorp was the only Huskies to score and rebound in doublefigures 13 and 11, respectively, to secure her first career double-double. LAST TIME OUT Northern Illinois hosted Ball State in the last contest of a two-game homestand. The Huskies and the Cardinals played a neck-and-neck contest through the first 11 minutes, tying three times and trading leads seven times, as the NIU defense limited BSU to just 14 points. A threepoint basket by the Cardinals Shelbie Justice with 6:36 left in the first half gave Ball State the lead that it never relinquished. NIU trailed BSU at halftime, 28-18. The Huskies attempted to mount a comeback in the second half as Alexis Lindstrom and Danny Pulliam each made three shots from behind the three-point line in the half to close the gap between the two teams, a gap that reached 18 points six minutes into the second half. Pulliam led all NIU scorers with 11 points, while also dishing four assists. Lindstrom finished with nine points in the game, all of which came in the second half. Natecia Augusta tied her career-high in blocks for the third time this season as she blocked three shots in the game. NIU was outscored at the free-throw line in the game, 24-3, as the Huskies lost to the Cardinals, 63-50. SCOUTING THE BULLS Buffalo owns a 13-9 overall record and 6-5 record in the Mid-American Conference, placing it in third in the MAC East standings. When NIU last played the Bulls, UB was on a two-game conference winning streak after opening conference 0-3. Buffalo went on to win five-consecutive MAC games before falling at Akron on February 2, 101-92. In their last three MAC contests, the Bulls are 1-2 and lost to Central Michigan, 74-63, last time out on February 9. Mackenzie Loesing is leading Buffalo in scoring with 17.2 points per game with 2.4 steals per outing to compliment her scoring. Loesing scored 15 points at NIU earlier this season to lead all scorers in the game. Kristen Sharkey is second in scoring with 14.6 points but is the leading rebounder at a clip of 9.0 per game. As a team, Buffalo is averaging 4.7 blocks per game, led by Christa Baccas 2.5 per game average. Point guard Mageaux Gupilan is distributing 4.7 assists per contest, the third best average in the MAC this season. Defensively, the Bulls are only allowing its opponents to shoot.358 from the field, the top mark in the Mid-American Conference this seaon. The output by Thorp game-in and game-out has been a sustainable product for NIU as she has recorded two double-doubles in that time, and three double-digit scoring and rebounding efforts. Since the Buffalo game on January 23, the night of her first career double-double, Thorp has led the Huskies in scoring and rebounding at a rate of 8.8 points and 7.3, respectively. The Hinckley, Ill. native is also third on the team in assists at 1.8 per game in the last six contests. GIVING THEMSELVES A CHANCE While NIU may have an 8-13 record this season and a 4-7 mark in the Mid-American Conference, the Huskies have been playing superb defense 5

and have kept themselves in position for wins over the latest stretch of conference games. Owning the second-best scoring defense mark in the conference this season, NIU is only surrendering 62.4 points per game, six points behind Bowling Green s top-mark of 56.3. The Huskies own a five point lead over third-place Buffalo, who is surrendering 67.5 points per game through 22 games. On the offensive end of the floor, Northern Illinois is scoring 61.2 points per game this season, a margin of only -1.2. INCHING CLOSER TO 1,000 Junior Amanda Corral is under 50 points away from 1,000 in her career, and becoming the 26th player in program history to reach the landmark point. Heading into the Ball State game, Corral is 35 points shy of 1,000 and becoming the first player since Marke Freeman (2008-11) to join the Huskie sorority on January 8, 2011 versus Central Michigan. Corral is averaging 13.6 points per game this season. NATECIA S BLOCK PARTY Junior forward Natecia Augusta has placed herself amongst the top-10 in the Mid-American Conference in blocked shots this season as she has accumulated 10 blocks in MAC contests. Three-times, she has blocked three shots in a game, last doing so against Ball State on February 9. For the season, the Peoria, Ill. native has 16, an average of 0.8 per game, and is tied for eighth in the MAC in blocked shots per game. In the last 11 games, she has racked up 10 blocks. POUNDING THE PAINT The Huskies have had their tendencies this season and scoring down in the paint has been a strength of the team. Through 21 games this year, NIU has averaged 24 points in the paint per game. 16 times this season Northern Illinois has accumulated 20-or-more points and has scored 30-or-more three times. The Huskies best performance of the year occurred December 21 versus Northern Iowa, scoring 42 points. BREAKING THE DUCK In the Huskies last four meetings with Buffalo, NIU is 0-4 versus the Bulls, including one postseason meeting. Northern Illinois has played well against the Bulls in those contests but has been unable to clinch victory. While UB has outscored the Huskies an average of 60-49, NIU has committed fewer turnovers than the Bulls in those contests, 72-70, and is Last Meeting (Buffalo) Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final Statistics Buffalo vs Northern Illinois 1/23/14 7 p.m. at DeKalb, Ill. SHE S HEATING UP... Sophomore Alexis Lindstrom has been heating up behind the threepoint line over the last three games for the Huskies. Versus Western Michigan, Akron and Ball State, Lindstrom has shot.400 behind the arc, draining 8-of-20 shots attempted. Heading into this run of good form, Lindstrom only made 3-of-12 shots attempted in the previous five games. IN THE LAST FOUR GAMES... In the last four games, redshirt junior Danny Pulliam has made at least one three point field goal for the Huskies. She is 6-for-11 (.545) from behind the arc in that time as well. THEY JUST GOT TO GET THERE NIU has had trouble getting to the free throw line over the last six game. However, if the Huskies get there, they re in good shape. In that stretch, Northern Illinois is shooting.686 from the charity stripe but only averaging 11.6 free throw attempts per game, while opponents are getting to the ine 22.5 times per game. If the Huskies were to go to the line 22.5 times, shooting.686 from the free throw line, NIU would be outscoring its opponents at the line, 16-15, and in the game, 62-59, as the Huskies would double its point output from the line from eight points to 16. THE ROAD WARRIOR When comparing players scoring rates at home versus on the road, there are subtle differences on the NIU squad -- all except for junior Danny Pulliam. For those that know Pulliam, this shouldn t come as a surprise as her toughness drives her competitive fire and makes her the point guard that she is. The Huskies have played 10 games at home and 10 games on the road this season and Pulliam is the only player on the Northern Illinois roster to score more points on the road than she does at the NIU Convocation Center. The Indianapolis, Ind., native averages 11.0 points on the road, compared to 8.8 at home. YOU WOULDN T LIKE ME WHEN I M ANGRY Freshman Jazmine Harris has scored in double-figures four times this season and she s also scored one or fewer five times this season. On two of those one or zero point efforts, Harris has followed up with Incredible Huk-like double-digit scoring games. After a zero point effort at South Dakota State, the West Allis, Wis., native scored a career-high 15 points versus Northern Iowa and after only scoring on one free throw, she added 14 versus Eastern Michigan. Only once has she not scored more than eight points after a one or zero point effort. For the Huskie faithful, this hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Harris this week. LIMITING ROAD TURNOVERS The Huskies have done a nice job on the road this season maintaining ball possession over their opponents, only committing 137 turnovers to their opponents 147 (+10), an average of 13.7 to 14.7 a game. THORP ON THE OFFENSIVE GLASS Jenna Thorp s grit and determination to cleanup the glass for NIU in Mid- American Conference games has been well documented and opposing teams can attest that fact as well. Over the last nine games, she has pulled down an average of 3.0 offensive rebounds a game, highlighted by a back-to-back five rebound performances at Miami and versus Buffalo. 6

With 36 offensive rebounds already with at least eight games remaining,.371 percent of her rebounding total this season, Thorp has already equalled her performance from last season and is only nine offensive rebounds shy of setting a new season-high in offensive boards. FRESHMAN PLAYING BIG Freshmen Jazmine Harris and Ally Lehman have been big contributors for the Huskies all season long. While they have taken their licks and suffered growing pains at times, they have combined for 11.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Lehman has secured a double-double this season and Harris has scored 10-or-more points four times. Lehman and Harris are fourth and fifth on the team in scoring, respectively, and Lehman is second on the team in assists with 2.2 per game. AUGUSTA GOING FOR AVERAGE Junior Natecia Augusta has easily been one of the Huskies most improved players from last season. After averaging 6.2 points and a field goal percentage of.528, she has improved her scoring average to 10.4 points per game with a field goal percentage of.510, the fifth-best this season in the Mid-American Conference. She has already taken 26 more shots this season with eight games remaining than in 2012-13. Augusta has also recorded four double-doubles this season and last had one at Central Michigan with 17 points and 10 rebounds. STAT OF NOTE This season, the Huskies have held three opponents scoreless from behind the three-point line. NIU has held two MAC opponents, Ohio and Kent State, without a three-point field goal and had its best performance at Illinois State on December 5, holding the Redbirds 0-for-11. Northern Illinois is second in the Mid-American Conference in three-point field goal defense in 2013-14, only allowing its foes to shoot.287 through 21 games. Bowling Green leads the conference with a clip of.268. REBOUNDS GALORE Junior Jenna Thorp has been a terror for the Huskies opposition as a rebounder since the start of MAC play, grabbing 7.1 boards per game in that span. The 11 game mark is the best average of her NIU career and is highlighted by three double-digit efforts versus Eastern Michigan (13), Akron (11) and Buffalo (11), setting a new career-high against the Eagles. Thorp is also averaging 8.8 points per game in the last six games. A NEW HIGH IN HELPERS Through 21 games this season junior Danny Pulliam has 65 assists. As a freshman in 2010-11, Pulliam accounted for a career-high 61 assists that season in 30 appearances. The last time out versus Ball State, Pulliam recorded four helpers to set a new career-high for assists in a season. She now has 150 in her career. KEY TO SUCCESS: REBOUNDING When comparing Northern Illinois and its opponents, the key to the Huskies success has been rebounding. NIU has outrebounded its opponents 11 times this season and is 8-3 when accomplishing the feat. The rebounds have negated second chance opportunities for the Huskies opponents as they re outscoring their opponents, 143-96 (+47), when outrebounding their foes. THE HUSKIES GOT HANDLES Northern Illinois has been amongst the top-50 in the NCAA for most of the season in fewest turnovers per game. Currently, the Huskies are No. 29 in the country and No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in turnovers per game at 13.4 per game. The Huskies are averaging just over 59 field goal attempts per game and by adding 13, the number the turnovers, NIU is averaging 72 possessions a game. Putting that into context, Northern Illinois is only committing a turnover every 5.6 possessions. Corral sports a flawless 4.0 grade point average in pre-physical therapy and paces the Northern Illinois squad in points per game at 14.6. Doreen Zierer (1979-82) and Diane Hillard (1978-82) were the last players to earn such honors, each earning distinction in 1982. Zierer was later named a Second Team Academic All-American by CoSIDA in 1982. Corral will move on to the national ballot, 1-of-40 players, in hopes of duplicating Zierer s feat. She is only 1-of-2 players from the MAC to earn the honor, joining Akron s Rachel Tecca. AN EXPERIENCED EYE Redshirt junior Danny Pulliam has an eye for breaking down Mid-American Conference defenses in the second half from her point guard position. The Huskies are shooting.413 in the second stanza and Pulliam can be partially credited for the success as she is averaging 1.9 assists during the second half of games. 7

Augusta is averaging 8.5 points per game, while Thorp has scored at a clip of 8.8 per contest. Thorp led Northern Illinois in scoring against Buffalo (12) and Akron (13), while Augusta led NIU at Bowling Green (12). The duo each scored 10 points versus Kent State January 29. DEFENSE, PARTY OF FIVE NIU has held five Mid-American Conference opponents to under 60 points this season and is 3-2 when doing so. The Huskies have held Ohio (51), Eastern Michigan (54), Bowling Green (57), Kent State (43) and Western Michigan (56) to under 60 points, with only the Broncos and Falcons emerging victorious. Northern Illinois is second in the MAC in scoring defense as it has only allowed conference opponents to score an average of 59.9 points per game. FORKING OUT ASSIST A trio of Huskies, Amanda Corral, Ally Lehman and Danny Pulliam, have been NIU s main ball-distributors since the start of MAC play as the three have combined for 82 of NIU s 138 assists at the Convocation Center this season (.621). Pulliam leads the trio with 33 helpers while Corral and Lehman have 20 and 29, respectively. USING TURNOVERS TO THEIR ADVANTAGE The NIU defense proved its mettle when it comes to facing the MAC s top competition as it caused Bowling Green to turn the ball over 18 times on January 26, while only committing 11. The Huskies used those turnovers to their advantage as they scored 19 points off those chances, a new season-high. Northern Illinois surpassed its previous high of 18 points off of turnovers previously recorded versus Lamar November 30 at the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic at New Mexico State. ON THE OFFENSIVE Over the last six games, the Huskies have worked their tail off on the offensive glass as they ve averaged 12.6 offensive rebounds in that span against Buffalo, Bowling Green, Kent State, Western Michigan and Akron. Versus the Bulls, NIU pulled down 16 boards off the offensive glass and followed up at BGSU with a 14 rebound performance. Jenna Thorp has been the leader of the pack as she has pulled down 15 offensive rebounds in that time. SHARING THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE LOAD NIU has had three players -- Natecia Augusta, Ally Lehman and Jenna Thorp -- record double-doubles this season. The last time three-or-more Huskie players recorded doubles in a season was in 2010-11, when Kim Davis, Ebony Ellis and Marke Freeman combined for 17 double-doubles. The Huskies have currently combined for seven double-doubles this season, with Augusta pacing Northern Illinois with four. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES Northern Illinois shot.933 from the charity stripe January 23 versus Buffalo, the Huskies highest clip of the 2013-14 season. It was the first time NIU attempted 15-or-more free throws in a game and shot better than.900 from the line since February 12, 2011 at Buffalo. Northern Illinois shot 15-of-16 from the charity stripe to post a.938 average. WHERE THEY RANK Both Amanda Corral and Danny Pulliam are ranked in the top-250 in the NCAA in their own respective statistical categories. Corral is 186th in the country in field goal percentage, an impressive feat for a guard, with a clip of.427. Pulliam is 129th in assist/turnover ratio at 1.59. For a complete ranking of the Huskies statistically in the MAC and the NCAA, turn to page nine of the notes. FINISHING STRONG Whatever Head Coach Kathi Bennett is telling her team at halftime of games this season is working as the Huskies have scored 40-or-more points in four of the last 11 games. The margin between Northern Illinois and its Mid-American Conference opponents in the second half is substantial as as the Huskies are outscoring them, 380-356. Only Central Michigan, Buffalo, Akron and Ball State have scored more points in the second half than NIU. CAP AND GOWN After finishing her last final December 10, redshirt junior Danny Pulliam

completed her Bachelor s of Science degree from Northern Illinois University in family and individual development. Pulliam walked across the stage December 15 at the NIU Convocation Center and started graduate school January 13 to begin working on a Master s degree in Sports Management at Northern Illinois. SOME PERSPECTIVE ON PULLIAM Through 21 games, Danny Pulliam has 65 assists, an average of 3.1 per game. The previous two seasons, Pulliam only made a total of 12 appearances and combined for 24 assists, averaging 2.0 per game. As a freshman in 2010-11, the Indianapolis, Ind. native played in 30 games and registered 61 dimes (2.1 APG). OK CORRAL Junior Amanda Corral has been the Huskies most-consistent scorer since her arrival in 2011-12 at Northern Illinois University. In 80 career games played, Corral has reached double-digits in scoring 54 times. The Hobart, Ind. native has averaged 12.0 points in her NIU career, ranking her 17th all-time in program history. A NUGGET ON NINEVEH, INDIANA Did you know that the school used in the movie Hoosiers was located in Nineveh, Ind., the hometown of NIU freshman guard Ally Lehman? According to IMDB.com, the exterior of the ficticious Hickory High School was actually Nineveh Elementary School. BACK IN HER COMFORT ZONE After spending time the last two seasons at point guard, junior Amanda Corral is back at her natural position of shooting guard. Injuries at various points over the last two seasons forced Corral to run the point. Despite being out of position, she averaged 12.7 points per game and 2.1 assists per game in 2012-13. MEET ALEX DUMOULIN Junior transfer Alex Dumoulin is used to being a member of a team as she is one of 10 children in her family, six girls and four boys. Dumoulin grew up playing basketball with her siblings and other children that worked on the family farm in Hampshire, Ill. The forward was an allamerican at Elgin Community College and grew up playing on the same team with her older sister, Cassie, who also played basketball at Elgin and was an all-american. She went on to play at Illinois. NIU VOTED SIXTH IN MAC POLL Prior to the Mid-American Conference s Preseason Teleconference, the conference office released the preseason coaches poll. Kathi Bennett Head Coach Fourth season at NIU (42-70) 21st season overall (338-247) Kathi Bennett, a veteran collegiate head coach who has guided three programs to eight NCAA Tournaments and five conference championships while posting a career winning percentage of.585 (330-234), was named head women s basketball coach at Northern Illinois University, May 18 2010, and has already received a contract extension through the 2017 season. Through three seasons, Bennett owns a 34-57 record with the Huskies. In the first two seasons under her guidance, the Huskies went from a 10-win team in 2009-10 to a 13-win team in 2010-11, despite losing three starters. More importantly, NIU improved from a 4-12 record in Mid-American Conference play to a 7-9 mark in the 2010-11 season. In 2011-12, Bennett directed a youthful roster of nine underclassmen to the MAC quarterfinals for the first time since 2007 with a 14-17 record, 6-10 in MAC play. The splash in the MAC postseason marked the Huskies first trip to Cleveland since 2009 and first win in the MAC Tournament since 2007. NIU s last second victory over Akron in the tournament landed the Huskies on the front page of the NCAA s Women s Basketball page. For their success, the Huskies were invited to play in the Preseason WNIT, where they opened the season at Iowa. Though NIU lost to the Hawkeyes, Northern Illinois would go on to win two-consecutive games in the tournament to finish 2-1. Showing the principles of Bennett s famed pack defense, the 2011-12 Huskies ranked in the top four in the league in scoring defense with a clip of 59.5, opponent field goal percentage, opponent three-point percentage and defensive rebounding. NIU also ranked 57th in the country in free throw percentage. Bennett, who earned her 300th career win with NIU to join her father, legendary coach Dick Bennett, on the 300-career-win list, came to NIU after two seasons as an assistant coach at Wisconsin, where she coached the Badgers defense and was instrumental in UW making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years in 2010. Wisconsin finished tied for third in the league and led the Big Ten in scoring defense in 2010 after ranking 10th in the league in that category prior to her arrival. A native of Stevens Point, Wis., Bennett is the sister of University of Virginia head men s basketball coach Tony Bennett; her father won 316 games as a collegiate coach at Washington State, Wisconsin, UW-Green Bay and UW-Stevens Point. Kathi played collegiately at both Stevens Point and Green Bay and earned her bachelor s degree from UW-Green Bay in 1986.
