Commodore s Comments October 2008 Summer has past and now we can look forward to the winds that the fall season brings. Take advantage of these balmy days and nights to drop the hook and enjoy the fruits of being the owner of a sailboat. Enclosed with the copy of the Anchorline you will find a copy of the recently adopted rules for docks and storage for boats and trailers. During the drafting of these rules, the board solicited input from members, at recent quarterly meetings and through the Anchorline. I encourage each member to read these rules and become familiar with them. The boat and trailer rules were adopted to remove derelict property from our club and ensure that each boat owner is in compliance with state and local boating registration requirements. The dock rules were adopted to ensure dock maintenance requirements are evaluated each year and that members are involved in the managements of their specific dock. The dock rules, also for the first time, provide a mechanism to also manage the courtesy dock and moorings. During the next thirty days the Harbormaster will be working with members to properly identify their trailers and assign parking spaces. In regard to boats, the Harbormaster will be working with the Dock Admirals to ensure that members comply with the rules. Members not in compliance will be notified and given time to correct the problem. On behalf of the board, I want to thank each of you for your input, support and cooperation in the adoption of the rules and making HIYC a better place to be. On Saturday September 20, twelve members participated in the US Coast Guard Vessel Safety Check Program, which was conducted by members of the Nashville chapter of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. A second date will be offered for members in November if interest dictates so. If interested, contact me, or any board member. Also, we are planning to offer the US Coast Guard Boating Course in early December. Specific information about the course will be in the November Anchorline. It s time to give back to HIYC. The fall clean-up date is scheduled for Saturday October 25 Th. Team leaders will be assigned to direct the effort. Areas of work will include: Elsie s Garden, herb garden, dinghy lot, north lot, top of the hill, service dock, laser lot, courtesy dock and the house. Please bring your toolbox and yard tools. Please check in at the clubhouse for assignment. The day will start at 8:30 am. with coffee and donuts in the clubhouse. A lunch will be served to reward all your hard work. In closing, I want to remind everyone of the quarterly meeting October 5 Th. We need everyone s participation as we elect officers for next year. See you then! Your Commodore, Larry Boroviak

Harbor Master s Notice Dock and Mooring waiting lists The Dock and Mooring waiting lists have been updated on the Web site and now include seniority dates for members on the lists. I would like to ask all the members who are on the waiting lists to check the lists and inform me of any discrepancies. If your name does not appear on a list and you want to be included I need that information as well. Please E-mail me with any changes or requests at (mpasbirk@aol.com). Mooring Inspections All of the Moorings have been inspected this summer and almost half of the chains replaced. We have also established a GPS location for all the anchors in the Mooring field. There are several boats with mooring lines in need of replacement. Members with boats on moorings are responsible for the safety of their boats and any damage caused by their boat in the event its mooring lines break and their boat is unsecured. This rule also applies to boats that are in dock slips that have old and worn dock lines. Boat Registration The HIYC Board has directed me to send a letter to members whose boats do not have current registration requesting their compliance with State and Club requirements. These letters will be mailed on the first of October and members will be requested to be in compliance within 60 days. Thanks to all the members who have given their time and support in the work that has been done this spring and summer on the docks and moorings. Mike Birk Harbor Master HIYC Bluenose Regatta for Lightings Harbor Island s 43 rd Bluenose Regatta for Lightnings will be held this year on October 31 to November 2. Competitors from around the country will begin arriving on Friday afternoon and departing on Sunday afternoon. The Clubhouse will be a busy place on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning during registration. On Saturday night, Houston s Market will serve a steak dinner to more than 100 competitors in the Clubhouse. Throughout the weekend spectators - both on and off the water - are invited and welcome. The details of the entire event including Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions can be had at http://www.hiycbluenose.org/bluenose/bluenose.html

Sea Scout S t News Thursday evening racing with the scouts has been fun this summer. mer. But the kids want to do more than n just race. A few weeks ago as I was about to leave the club I noticed everyone e standing in the parking lot and waving for me to come over. They had planned d on having an afternoon of sailing, swimming and of course eating that t Saturday y afternoon. It was Thursday evening and not everyone e was there e but they wanted me to get the word out to the remaining leaders and kids. So Friday morning an email and a couple of phone calls later everyone e knew what was happening. Thus Saturday y afternoon on th September 9 was spent at the club b with the Scouts. There was not much h wind but that t did not seem em to matter. Everyone had a wonderful time and had plenty of great food. And a couple of lasers and a SunFish were e put to good use. On other fronts: We re planning ning on doing an overnighter some time in October. Just not sure when yet. Might just get that t figured out at this week s meeting. The mast for the Cal. Well it s not up yet. Seems it took 3 or was it 4 attempts tempts to get the bulkhead put in. Additionally i with the stuff f that t was stolen l we re having i g to fabricate b i some items s as well. One prime example is the hole in the deck. A piece of the deck came out with the chain plate. That was stolen and thus the patching g of the hole has gotten a lot more involved. If we still had that t piece we could have simply applied some e epoxy and pushed the piece back in. The slot for the chain plate e etc would have lined up with no real r effort. for Now we ll have to figure f out a good method of lining ing up the slot and d cutting ting it. For eight or nine years the kids have cleaned the club house as part of their regular activities. We were first t approached proached to do this when the board became dissatisfied ied with the job being done by a commercial mercial group. It has proved to be a wonderful fund raising tool. Although h it has been a challenge at times, it has also proven n to be a good tool for learning and d practicing responsibility. As new kids came into the program they got taught the tasks involved by the older kids. Yes sometimes things got missed but for the most part the kids did a wonderful l job. When ever there was a complaint the kids worked to make sure that t issue was handled. Now the board has decided ded they want the house cleaned ed on Mondays. With kids coming from as far away ay as Lyles TN (65 miles) I cannot ask them to come two days a week. Also note that for most of our group, Monday is Boy Scout night. Thus a commercial mercial group is again cleaning ng the club house. On the positive ive side this frees up around 30 minutes each week for teaching, skills development t planning sessions etc. But we will soon be looking at other fund raising possibilities. Andy and Cathy y Griswold Fall Cleanup Day October b 25, 2008 Bring your toolbox and ndyard tools and check k inat the clubhouse. Coffee and donuts at8:30 A.M. A lunch will be served to reward all your hard work. Seeyou then!

Handicap classes will be comprised of all other entries and will compete under the Portsmouth Number System using wind-range specific values. The Regatta Committee may combine or split classes at its sole discretion The regatta registration fee is $30.00 Trophies awarded in all classes to the top three finishers.
