KESSEDHEK ARWODHYOW HA HENWYN-LE SIGNAGE AND PLACENAME PANEL Kovnotyansow an kuntelles synsys: dy Gwener 15 mis Gortheren 2016 Draft Minutes of the meeting held: Friday 15 July 2016 Present: N Meek (Chair), J Edmondson, R Lyon, K George In attendance: S Rogerson # Item Action 1. Diharesow / Apologies J Holmes, L Jenkin 2. Kovnotyansow / Minutes The minutes of the meeting on Friday 17 th June 2016 were read and agreed. 3. Materow ow sordya / Matters arising The spelling of panel went to the dictionary and terminology panels for consideration after the last signage meeting. The final response was still pending. 4. Materow Ughella / Strategic Issues The panel were asked to contact the chair with names to potentially join the signage panel. Prospective members would need to reside in Cornwall or be able to travel to the monthly signage meetings and any special meetings. 5. Arwodhow yn stret / Street signs Porhan Green, Falmouth = Glesin Porth an Wydh There was general consensus that por was Cornish porth port, but the second element was less certain. Historical forms for Port Navas, Constantine include Porhanaves 1649, Porranavas 1649 show a similar construction; this suggests Porth an Port of with a missing final element.
The form Porhan Withe was identified on Lord Burghley s map of 1595, which may be the missing element. The panel were happy this probably comes from gwydh trees considering the local topography. It was also possible that Porkan Hill and Porkan Lane identified in an 1815 book of Falmouth were mistranscriptions of Porhan. Potential names for new Penzance development: The Moor (Penzance) = An Hal Pascoe s Moor (Penzance) = Hal Baskow 6. Henwyn leow / Place names a) Misc Names Raised since last meeting Drawna Point (St Keverne) = Penn Dreyn Drawna Rocks = Kerrek Dreyn The previously approved translation Penn Dreynennow (20/05/2016) had been queried. It was agreed that it linked to dreyn thorns. Although the historical forms start at 1748, it would have been entirely likely for the final <-a> to be plural <ow>. The lack of <dn> in the forms also suggests the original word only had a single <n>. Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station = Selva Lorell Goon Helghi Selected selva base (of operations) instead of translating it literally as gorsav station. Tregajorran = Tregasworon (previously decided) Queried how kasworon* warrior should be spelled. This example is a personal name, including kas battle and goron warrior, man. The on suffix is obscure. The associated kasorek militant may be more 2
accurately translated as an individual s military bearing. b) Redruth names Creeglase = Krug Glas {amendment} Grace Richards s Tenement (Redruth) = Bargen-tir Gras Richard {amendment} The final s found on family names such as Richards denotes of Richard and would be removed from translations. Gweelzemeer = Gwel Zel Meur {amendment} The form Gwealzealmeer found in the 1861 census was originally considered a mistake, but a similar spelling Gwealzelmere identified by Bannister supports the idea of a middle element. His suggestion was isel low, which would make sense with a field name. If the first word was gwel field, view instead of gwels grass, this would also support the additional word. The term sel* found with a long vowel has the following meanings: seal (i.e. signet ring) [found in Origo Mundi] base [found in Vocabularium Cornicum], with a long vowel. Due to the lack of evidence, the panel opted to use the element Zel found in the 1871 form Gwealzelmeer, possibly meaning isel low. Harris Croft = Kroft Harri {amendment} Harris Mill = Melin Harri {amendment} Harris Tenement = Bargen-tir Harri {amendment} Jenkin s Tenement (Higher Cardrew, Redruth) = Bargen-tir Jenkyn {amendment} Final <-yn> was considered to be preferable to <- in>. 3

Tresedey = DEFERRED Trestrail s Tenement = Bargen-tir Trestrel Used as a family name in this instance. The Probus place-name was identified as a possible origin of the family name. Historical spelling used, may mean strel mat. Vauxhall = Vauxhall Believed to be named for the place in London. Vauxhall in London comes from the family name Faulke, it was expected to have been known in Cornwall in 1841. Selected Field Names Higher Park Pillion (Lower Laitey) = Park Pilyon Wartha Queried the Cornish for pillion ; believed to come from mine waste. The plural of pil pile, heap is pilyon. Vosper s Field (South Trefula) = Fospeur Vosper is a Cornish surname. The place-name Trevosper, Launceston Tre + vos walled* + burgh borough, the last element being an English reinterpretation. Meaning fos wall + peur pasture. Mine and Associated Names Mc Dowall s Stamps = Stampys Mc Dowall Opted to retain the anglicised form instead of the Gaelic. S. Davey s Stamping Mills = Stampys Davi Although the English form uses the plural mills, a whole set of stamps would comprise the mill. Sarahs Foundry = Teudhji Sara Previously translated the Cornish surname Sara. Wheal Boys (Redruth) = Hwel an Boyes The spelling boyes was identified in Bewnans Ke, line number 40.10. Wheal Fatt = Hwel Fatt Fatt occurs in Origo Mundi, originally found in OE with <tt>. Wheal Providence = Hwel Providens Providence found as providens in Tregear, page 46 verse O. King s Arm s Inn = Tavern Arwodh an Myghtern Orchard s Smith Shop = Shoppa Orchard Considered unnecessary to use govel forge in the translation. Orchard is treated as family name.
