Brown Belt III Techniques 1. Deceptive Panther 2. Thrust into Darkness 3. Circling Fans 4. Rotating Destruction 5. Protecting Fans 6. Parting of the Snakes 7. Unfurling Crane 8. Falling Falcon Forms & Sets: Short Form Two At this level the kenpoist enters the Advanced level of training. He begins to develop an acute sense of awareness and the ability to deal with potentially escalating levels of attack and multiple opponent scenarios. A brown belt will recognize their own movement in relation the Universal Pattern. He will utilize opposites, reverses, and returning paths as a means of Economy of Motion that will lead to a deeper understanding of Kenpo principles. Through dedication and practice, these principles will become part of the brown belt s overall kenpo karate. 3

Silk Wind American Kenpo Karate PARTING OF THE SNAKES Technique Description: 1. From attention stance, step your left foot forward and drop into a soft bow while doing an left up-block and an inward forearm strike. 2. Raise your posture to simultaneously deliver a right knee strike and a right back elbow strike. 3. Punch forward with your right fist as you convert your right knee into a chambered right back kick. 4. As soon as your right foot lands, step your left foot behind your right into a twisted stance to deliver a right backfist. (1) (2) (3) (4) 4

Volume 2: Brown to Black Belt (Youth) PARTING OF THE SNAKES Technique Description (continued): 5. Pivot counter-clockwise into a guarding stance to deliver a chicken kick, left followed by right. 6. As your right foot lands forward, deliver a right rising backfist into your left palm. 7. Turn counter-clockwise into a twisted stance as you deliver two bear claw strikes: right high to the front and left low to the rear. 8. Right front kick followed by left back kick. Cross out (5a) (5b) (6) (7) (8a) (8b) 5

Silk Wind American Kenpo Karate PARTING OF THE SNAKES Application: against two opponents, one punching from the front and the other grabbing you from behind 6

Volume 2: Brown to Black Belt (Youth) Multiple Opponents: When dealing with two opponents at the same time, you must maintain awareness of the magnitude of each one s threat. In this technique, we start with an opponent behind that is grabbing you and a second in front who is punching. The punch is the most immediate threat, so he is dealt with first. As the situation continues, the other opponent may become more of a threat, so your attention moves towards him. 7

Silk Wind American Kenpo Karate UNFURLING CRANE Technique Description: 1. From attention stance, step your left foot back into a guarding stance and do a right out-block, followed by a right in-block. 2. Circle your left palm counter-clockwise as a windmill parry to check on the outside of your right in-block. Deliver a right backfist to the height of your ribs. 3. Pivot into a bow-and-arrow stance to strike upward with your left palm. 4. Return to guarding stance to deliver a right backfist to the height of your head. (1a) (1b) (2a) (2b) (3) (4) 8

Volume 2: Brown to Black Belt (Youth) UNFURLING CRANE Technique Description (continued): 5. Slide your left foot forward into a cat stance to strike with a low hammer fist, using the motion of a pendulum. 6. Raise your right knee into a crane stance, contouring your right elbow upward and striking forward with your left palm. 7. Pivot slightly on your left foot to deliver a right side kick, followed by a right inward hand-sword as your foot lands. Cross out. (5) (6) (7a) 9 (7b)

Silk Wind American Kenpo Karate UNFURLING CRANE Application: against a combination left / right roundhouse punches 10

Volume 2: Brown to Black Belt (Youth) Crane Stance: Many martial arts, including kenpo, use the familiar postures of animals to describe stances, strikes, and kicks. The crane is a large bird noted for its ability to balance on one leg. In Unfurling Crane, the movements resemble a crane unfurling its wings into a one legged stance. Targets: take note of the striking patterns and targets utilized in the technique. Targets move from low to high, right to left, and inside to outside. Kenpo techniques are designed this way to draw the opponent s attention to one place, thereby opening up a target in another. 11
