Rules governing the event Competitor conduct Competitors are reminded that they share both the hotel grounds and the road with hotel guests and other people who may or may not be fully aware of the event. We request that you treat members of the public including other road users, marshals, other competitors, event officials and venue staff with respect. (Indeed, most of the people helping out are volunteers and the occasional thank you does wonders!) Riding on the open road The cycle section is on open roads, so please ensure that you observe the rules of the road at all times. Please recognise that race marshals are not permitted to stop the traffic. Marshalls are there to give direction only and not instruction. Competitors are responsible for making their own decisions as to whether it is safe to proceed or not. If in doubt you should stop! Littering We re honoured to hold the race in such a beautiful environment. Please respect the area, keep it clean and tidy and avoid littering. Please take all your rubbish home. Non Drafting This race is a non-drafting race - meaning competitors are not allowed to take shelter behind or beside another competitor or motor vehicle during the cycling segment of the race. Drafting is cheating! The draft zone is a rectangle measuring 7 metres long by 3 metres wide which surrounds every bike on the bike course. The front edge of the front wheel defines the centre of the leading three metre edge of the rectangle. A maximum of 15 seconds is allowed to progress though the draft zone of another competitor. If an overtaking manoeuvre is not completed within 15 seconds, the overtaking cyclist must drop back. 2 minute time penalties (or DQ for repeated drafting) will be issued for infringements. See diagram opposite for more information. Helmets Hard shell helmets will be compulsory and must be worn throughout the cycle section. No helmet = no race. They must be fastened prior to mounting your bike and neither undone nor removed until your bike is racked. Bikes It is the responsibility of all competitors to ensure that their bike is in a roadworthy condition. Whilst we recommend using road or time trial bikes, it s fine for mountain bikes or other similar bikes to be used. Ipods/ mobile phones etc Mobile phones, personal stereos, MP3s, ipods etc are not permitted to be used during the race at any time. 5
Course details: SWIM 1 Swim 1: 375m (1 lap) The swim starts from the water s edge, a short walk from transition (and just to the side of the finish area). The swim course is 1 lap. Competitors will swim the triangular shaped route anti-clockwise (i.e. keeping the buoys to your left hand side at all times). Since the water temperature will be above 22C, wetsuits are not permitted to be used in this race. After completing 1 lap of the swim course, run through the blue swim arch, and then up the steps to the right of the beach. At the top of the stairs you will turn left and follow the markers and run through the hotel grounds to transition. Canoes will be on hand to provide safety cover. If you get into difficulty, turn on your back and raise one arm; a canoe will then escort you back to the beach. If you appear to be struggling in the swim, or if you have been in the water for a long time, you may be pulled out. If you do withdraw at any time during the swim, then please ensure that you inform a race volunteer or official immediately. Swim 1: (375m): 1 lap After completing your 1 lap, exit through the blue arch, and then run straight to transition. 6
Course details: TRANSITION 1 On completion of the swim, competitors run to the transition area. There will be a flow through system, and competitors should follow signs and marshals. Helmets must be fastened before you take your bike off the rack. *** No helmet, no ride *** Your race number should be visible on your back for the bike section of the race. Do not get on your bike until you have exited transition and run past the bike mount line. Once on your bike, beware of the speed bumps on the road to the hotel s main gate. We ll try to take out sections of the removable speed bumps, but note that a couple of the speed bumps cannot be removed. Bike mount line: You must cross the bike mount line before you get on your bike. Speed bumps: Caution! There are some speed bumps on the road to the main gate. Helmet on: You must fasten your helmet before you take your bike off the rack. 7
Course details: BIKE 1 Bike 1: 10km (2 laps) The bike course uses the road outside the hotel, which will remain open to traffic. Whilst we don t anticipate there being much traffic on the road at this time, you must take the utmost care whilst riding (including at junctions and roundabouts), and note that you will not have right of way at some of the junctions. Usual road rules apply. Don t take risks that might only save you a couple of seconds! Once out on the main road, competitors will ride 2 laps, before retracing your route back to transition. The race is not draft legal. See drafting rules on page 5. Bike 1: (10km): 2 laps Once on the main road outside the hotel gates, you will ride 2 full laps before heading back inside the hotel gate and returning to transition 8
Course details: TRANSITION 2 At the end of the bike section you will be directed to the transition area. You must get off your bike prior to arriving at the dismount line. Run through into transition, and rack your bike. Only once your bike has been racked are you permitted to take off your helmet. Change into your running equipment, and head out of the transition area. Please be considerate to other competitors and place your bike and equipment in the correct area. As you exit transition you ll be directed out to the right, and back down the parking bay that is parallel to the transition area. Take care the parking area will still be open to vehicles.
