1 240 Sparks Street, PO Box 55023, Ottawa, ON K1P 1A1 www.canadiannordicsociety.com email: CanNordSoc@yahoo.ca CNS President s Report Fellow CNS Members: The Canadian Nordic Society (established in 1963) is about to start its 2008-09 year of activities. Last May, a virtually brand new Board was elected, with only one carryover. Yet while the membership is new, we carry on with the successful activities we have been doing for years. First is our Speaker s Series. From September to May, we have a monthly speaker to describe various aspects of Nordic culture and current events. When the Society first started, our Speakers would often illuminate cultural matters few in Canada were aware of. Today, with so many diplomatic and business relationships between Canada and the five Nordic countries, many of our presentations are virtually from today s headlines. On September 25, Michael and Britta Jarvis will give a slide presentation on their sailing around the Baltic Sea one summer. More information on this event is available elsewhere in this Newsletter. We are pleased that Bernard Deadman, the only returning member from last year s Board, will continue organizing this tradition. Most importantly, our annual Lucia celebration will take place on Saturday, December 13 at Christ Church Cathedral. CNS has been hosting this event for more than forty years and it is by far our most popular event with hundreds attending and scores of young children participating. The event requires extensive planning and work so hopefully many of you should already be considering as to how you might help. Finally, the Canadian Nordic Society, from its founding, has always stressed good ties with each of the five Nordic embassies located here in Canada s capital. Indeed, each of the Nordic ambassadors, by tradition, is an honourary member of our Society. We will continue to work with each of the embassies to feature some of their activities into our cultural program. If I might stress one matter which was much discussed last year: this is your Canadian Nordic Society. While we, as a board, can organize a social program and a Speaker s series, we also need your input as to how things are going and on any suggestions as to what new initiatives we could undertake (such as, for example, a suggestion for a Speaker or a different way a social event could be organized). Please free contact to contact any one of us. We are always open for suggestions. Let s have an enjoyable year! 3 CANADIAN NORDIC SOCIETY EVENTS THAT SUMMER ON THE BALTIC "Britta and Michael Jarvis were members of the CNS for several years before leaving Canada in their 35 foot sailboat in 1996. Following three years sailing to and in the Caribbean, they crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1999 and spent the summer of 2000 on the Baltic Sea and neighbouring waters. Their course took them from a starting point near the mouth of the Thames River, where the boat had been left over winter, across the North Sea, through the Kiel Canal and then along the south and east Baltic Sea coasts to St. Petersburg. A month followed on the lakes and rivers of Karelia before returning to St. Petersburg. From there, they sailed westward to Helsinki and Stockholm, transited the Gota Canal to Gothenburg and then, turning south, went on to Denmark and the Kiel Canal. Entering the European canal and river system through Holland, they continued on to Paris and, after over wintering there, to the Mediterranean and Turkey. They left the Mediterranean after three years to return to Canada in 2005." Their presentation will consist of slides supported by a narrative. Four pictures are attached in the hope that one will be suitable for inclusion with your email notice to members. They are: - Baltic #035 - raising the Swedish courtesy flag when approaching Stockholm after an overnight sail from Finland - Baltic #037 - locks on the Gota Canal - Baltic #038 - Gota Canal; a Canadian escort - Baltic #047 - Laudance anchored in Kungsbacka Fjord, west coast of Sweden SWEDISH CLASSES Registration for Swedish language course at Glebe HS Sept 6 th and 13 th 9am. Classes Saturdays 9 am 12:30 pm throughout school year. High School students (credit course) and adults only. All levels. Info: 613-523-8780. Registration - September 6, 2008 at Hopewell Ave. PS. 17 Hopewell Avenue Classes will run from 9:00 am to 11:30 am on Saturdays (Sept. 6, 2008 to June 13, 2009) LEASING My home for lease is a 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom semi detached home. It is very clean and has a small island in the kitchen, gas fireplace, two decks, and an important feature for people from the Nordic regions - a Sauna (two person). I'm not sure what the lease amount will be as I've heard from friends that some renters like to have all utilities and services included so rent could vary from $2,200 to $3,500. If you are looking to lease a home with preference to having a Sauna please let me know at 613-552-1407 (c) or at home 613-233-3722. Much appreciated, Blair
