There are 24 Division I schools that reside in The Golden State. n The Aztecs advanced to the Round of 32 last season and are one of nine schools nationally to make it to at least the third round in each of the last three seasons (complete list below). n San Diego State is one of four teams in the country to have qualified for the NCAA tournament and win at least 23 games in six consecutive seasons (Duke, Kansas and Louisville). n The Aztecs have advanced as far as any other Mountain West school for the third straight season and for the fourth time in the last five years. n San Diego State owns six of the Mountain West s last eight NCAA tournament victories (current members only) after reaching the Round of 32 last season. n SDSU won 27 games in 2014-15, and have won at least 23 games in seven straight seasons (27.4 wins per year). SDSU has won a conference-record nine league titles. n SDSU has outright won or shared the Mountain West regular-season crown five times in the last six years. n San Diego State has been one of the elite programs in the nation since the start of the 2010-11 season, posting a cumulative record of 141-36. SDSU s.797 winning percentage is the seventh-best nationally over the last five years (complete list below). n The Aztecs will feature a 2015-16 roster that will have a total of 587 games under their collective belt, which is more than both of the program s NCAA Sweet 16 squads. The 2010-11 group entered the year with 523 career games played, while the 2013-14 team boasted 450 career Division I outings at the start of that campaign. The Aztecs also finished seventh in defensive effective field-goal percentage (43.5), 15th in defensive two-point field-goal percentage (42.3) and 22nd in three-point field-goal percentage (30.6). n The Aztecs appeared in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll seven times and was either in the rankings or receiving votes in 17 of the 19 weeks. SDSU was ranked as high as 13 (Dec. 1). n San Diego State appeared in the USA Today Coaches Top-25 Poll all 20 editions of the rankings. The Aztecs, however, were ranked 11 times and rose to as high as 14 (Dec. 1). SDSU finished the season in the receiving votes category. n Since 2010-11, SDSU is 73-23 (.760) against Mountain West competition (regular season and tournament), which is tops in the league. New Mexico ranks second with a record of 63-31 (.670), and UNLV is third at 54-39 (.581). n The Aztecs are 49-1 in their last 50 games vs. schools from the state of California. n San Diego State has won 145 straight games when leading with five minutes to play. Last season, SDSU went 25-0 when ahead with five minutes left on the game clock. n SDSU has won 13 straight home games vs. non-conference foes, which is tied for the fifth-longest streak in school history. The record is 27, accomplished from Nov. 22, 2008 to Nov. 30, 2011. PLAYER PERSONNEL n San Diego State loses three savvy veterans in JJ O Brien, Aqeel Quinn and Dwayne Polee II to graduation, but the transition is expected to be smooth considering its leading scorer and rebounder (Winston Shepard), leading shot blocker (Skylar Spencer) and second-leading three-point threat (Matt Shrigley) are back. Throw in the the inside presence of senior Angelo Chol, the experience of juniors Dakarai Allen and D Erryl Williams, the emergence of rising sophomores Trey Kell and Malik Pope, and the arrivals of redshirt freshman Zylan Cheatham and highly touted true freshman Jeremy Hemsley, SDSU should once again contend for another Mountain West title and an NCAA tournament berth. n Shepard is coming off a season in which he led the team in scoring (11.1) and fell 0.5 points shy of matching his career high, but set a personal record in rebounding (5.3), three-point field-goal percentage (.298) and free-throw percentage (.671). The senior came on strong in the middle of the conference season and averaged 14.0 points on 47.8 percent shooting (38.9 from three), 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists in the final eight games of the regular season. The second-team all-mw performer has improved each year during his time on Montezuma Mesa and one of the most versatile players in the nation is expected to do the same in his final tour. n Spencer is closing in on the Mountain West all-time blocked shots record of 244 set by Justin Williams of Wyoming (2004-06) after establishing the school record last season. The senior has 231 blocked shots in 106 games and will anchor the Aztec defense, which is one of the best in the nation, once again in 2015-16. Spencer averaged a career-high 5.1 rebounds, while setting personal bests in blocked shots (91 - single-season school record) and assists (11). Offensively, his scoring averaged dipped in 2014-15, from 4.8 as a sophomore to 3.7 as a junior, but Spencer took 36 fewer shots last season compared to his sophomore campaign. His offensive game should improve next season and foes will still find it difficult to score on him like the previous three years. n Shrigley enters his junior campaign one season after nearly setting career highs across the board despite suffering an elbow injury in the preseason and missing the first six games of 2014-15. The San Diego native averaged 5.1 points (0.1 off career high), 1.6 rebounds (matched career high), a career-high 1.0 assists, 0.3 blocked shots (matched career high) and a career-high 0.8 steals. He also knocked down a career-high 41 three-pointers. Shrigley started 17 of the final 21 games of the season (15 of final 16 Mountain West games; Did not start on Senior Night) and saw his minutes increase from his redshirt freshman year (15.8) to his sophomore campaign (21.1). As a returning starter and upperclassman, Shrigley will be looked upon to provide a scoring punch from the outside and be a reliable defender. n Chol returned to action last season after sitting out 2013-14 after transferring from Arizona. As a junior, he put up career highs in scoring (4.4), rebounding (3.1), assists (6) and minutes played (13.7). The soon-to-be senior was stellar from the field, making 55.2 percent of his field-goal attempts and comes into 2015-16 as a 53.4-percent shooter. When he has been on the floor, he has been effective and his per- 40-minute numbers reflect it: 12.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots, 55.2 percent shooting. He runs end-to-end harder than anyone on the team, which should pay dividends in 2015-16. n The defensive-minded Allen and Williams are back for their junior campaigns after seeing more court time as sophomores than as freshmen. Both averaged career highs in scoring and rebounding, and had more steals than their previous campaign. Per 40 minutes in 2014-15, Williams averaged a team-high 3.1 steals per game, while Allen checked in with a 1.9 average. Both have shown flashes of being able to score, and expect them to continue to make strides in that area, while bringing it defensively every night.

n Kell and Pope showed flashes of brilliance last season despite being true freshmen. Kell (5.6 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.6 apg) started the first 15 games and enjoyed a three-game stretch at the Maui Invitational where he averaged 14.3 points en route to earning a spot on the all-tournament team. In his final 12 games, Kell took care of the ball, committing just seven turnovers (11 games with one turnover or less) to finish as one of four scholarship players to with more assists than turnovers for the year. Pope (5.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg,.408 3FG), meanwhile, did not see regular minutes until late January after being integrated slowly into the rotation following two leg injuries suffered in high school. In those 18 games to close the season, he averaged 7.2 points on 52.2-percent shooting (47.2 percent from distance) and 3.5 rebounds in 18.7 minutes. During that time, he played less than 17 minutes just three times. His per-40-minutes numbers: 13.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 2.1 blocked shots, 45.5 percent shooting, 40.8 percent three-point shooting. Both are certain to be major contributors in their second seasons at SDSU. n Cheatham s long-awaited debut is set for 2015-16 after arriving on campus with a foot injury that ultimately put his true freshman year on the shelf. The former four-star, Rivals 150 (No. 78) and ESPN 100 (No. 88) player underwent surgery before 2014-15 started and rehabbed through the first three games of the conference campaign before deciding to redshirt. The Phoenix, Arizona native is a highenergy player, who knock down a three-pointer and dunk on anybody down low. He is one of the most athletic players to ever attend San Diego State. n Hemsley will arrive on campus with much fanfare. Hemsley led Damien High School to a California CIF Division III state title and a 29-5 overall record en route to being named the L.A. Times Player of the Year. He averaged 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists his senior season and will head south to San Diego as a four-star player, who is ranked 63rd on the ESPN 100, 72nd on the 247Sports Composite and 74th on the Rivals 150. In 16 seasons, he has taken a program that regularly missed out on the conference postseason tournament, to one which has become one of the best programs in the country. When Fisher arrived on the scene in March of 1999, he found a basketball program that wasn't good enough to be called average. The Aztecs had suffered through 13 losing seasons in 14 years. Members of the school's last NCAA team were in the early stages of middle age. The expectations were set. The Aztecs were expected to lose. The year before Fisher's arrival on campus, San Diego State won just four games. Now those days are a distant memory. Fisher has guided San Diego State to the NCAA Tournament eight times, including six straight with at least one victory in four of the last five years. In 2011, he led SDSU to a 34-3 record and a berth in the Sweet 16. In 2014, the Aztecs nearly matched the 2011 squad by going 31-5 and also reaching the Sweet 16. Fisher has also taken the Aztecs to the NIT four times, including their run to the national semifinals in 2009. San Diego State has currently been to the postseason 10 straight years. On March 26, 1999, San Diego State announced its arrival on the basketball scene when it introduced Fisher as its new coach. Fresh from a stint with the Sacramento Kings and with three appearances in the Final Four and a national championship in his pocket, he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. And work was needed. It looked to be a daunting challenge and yet the man with one of the highest winning percentages in NCAA Tournament history had no reservations. No head-coaching career, at any level, started quicker than that of Fisher. Six games into his head-coaching career he was undefeated and sporting a national championship ring. And the success didn't stop with the national title. Fisher's eight-plus seasons at Michigan produced a 184-82 (.692) record, nine postseason tournament berths and three trips to the NCAA championship game, including the magical run to the 1989 national title. Under Fisher, the Wolverines also claimed an NIT championship, won at least 20 games four times and finished among the top three in the powerful Big Ten Conference five times. In 1995, Michigan set a league record by holding opponents to just 39.4 percent shooting from the floor. Fisher and Co., raised the bar even higher in the postseason. His seven NCAA Tournament teams at Michigan combined for a 20-6 record, which put him fourth among active coaches and ninth in NCAA history with a winning percentage of.769 in the national bracket after his stint in Ann Arbor. His accomplishments may be even greater at San Diego State. In 2001-02 he led the Aztecs to the postseason for the first time since 1985 and for just the fourth time ever. The 21 wins were second most for the school as a Division I program and the most since 1985. The fact that those numbers came after just three seasons signifies what is one of the great turnarounds in college basketball. He followed that up with a third consecutive season with a.500 or better record in 2002-03 and led SDSU back to the postseason for the second consecutive season for only the second time in the school s Division I history. In addition, SDSU claimed its first Division I postseason victory with a win in the NIT. In 2006-07, he led SDSU to the MW regular season and tournament crowns and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a Division I then-schoolrecord 24 wins and started the current streak of 10 consecutive seasons with at least 20 victories. Included in that stretch is seven straight 23-win campaigns. In 2011-12, in what was perceived as a rebuilding year, Fisher led SDSU to a 26-8 record, a spot in the NCAA Tournament and its second straight Mountain West regular-season title. Then in 2012-13, Fisher and the Aztecs advanced to the third round of the NCAAs for the second time in three years with their third-ever NCAA tournament win. In 2013-14, in what also called a rebuilding season, SDSU won the Mountain West and reached the Sweet 16 before finishing 31-5. Last season, San Diego State defeated St. John s to win an NCAA tournament game for a school record third consecutive season. Although the Aztecs post-season run came to an end to eventual national-champion Duke (the second time in five seasons the Aztecs have been eliminated by the soon to be national champs), SDSU posted a 27-9 record and earned a share of its second consecutive Mountain west Conference regular-season title. Known initially as one of the top evaluators of talent, Fisher continues to dazzle with his on-court coaching ability. San Diego State has won 145 consecutive games when leading with five minutes to play and is 272-38 under Fisher when owning a higher field goal percentage than its opponent. SDSU is 18-2 in its last 20 overtime games. Then on Nov. 19, 2014, San Diego State added three more years to Fisher s current contract, which was set to expire at the end of the 2014-15 campaign. With the additional three seasons, Fisher is set atop Montezuma Mesa through the 2017-18 season. Steve Fisher Year-By-Year Conference Year School W L Pct. W L Pct. Brian Dutcher Associate Head Coach/Head Coach in Waiting 17th at SDSU Minnesota 82 Justin Hutson Assistant Coach 8th at SDSU CSU Bakersfield 94 David Velasquez Assistant Coach 14th at SDSU San Diego State 07 One of Steve Fisher s first moves as head coach at San Diego State was to hire Brian Dutcher as his top assistant. Dutcher, 55, was a regional scout for the Sacramento Kings before assuming the role of assistant head coach at SDSU. When Fisher decides to retire, Dutcher will assume head coaching duties as he was anointed head coach in waiting in August of 2011. Dutcher served as assistant coach and later associate head coach at Michigan under Fisher. He spent 10 seasons on the Wolverine staff, establishing himself as one of the nation s top assistant coaches. His first year in Ann Arbor was 1989 and resulted in a national title for Michigan as he assisted then-interim head coach Steve Fisher on the bench. Dutcher headed up UM s recruiting efforts in 1990-91 when the Wolverines inked Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber. The Fab Five is considered perhaps the best recruiting class in NCAA history. Dutcher helped lead that group to nearly 100 wins, two berths in the NCAA championship game and a regional final over a four-year period. He was also on the Michigan staff for an NIT championship and a Big Ten tournament title (1998). Dutcher s recruiting prowess, however, was demonstrated by more than just the Fab Five haul. Michigan had the nation s top-ranked recruiting class in 1993-94 and in 1994-95, with a group that included Maurice Taylor and Jerod Ward. The accomplishment marked the first time that a university had the nation s top class in consecutive years. His efforts at SDSU have gained accolades as well. The first fullyear recruiting effort by Fisher, Dutcher and Co., resulted in a consensus top-40 group. Their second resulted in a top-25 class without counting a pair of high-profile transfers. Eleven seasons ago, Dutcher helped attract SDSU s first McDonald s All-American. In 2004, freshmen Brandon Heath and Marcus Slaughter earned starting spots and all-league recognition. Dutcher was a key figure in bringing in classes that produced three NBA draft picks the last four seasons (entering 2014-15), the No. 24 class in 2012 and a top-15 group in 2014. He also helped land Tulane transfer Josh Davis, who ended up being the MW Newcomer of the Year, and Arizona transfer Angelo Chol at the start of summer 2013. More recently, he helped with the recruitment of a pair of four-star players who will arrive in time for the 2015-16 season. Dutcher is firmly entrenched as one of the nation s top recruiters after showing that his rapport is as strong with potential student-athletes on the West Coast as it was in the vaunted Big Ten. Dutcher was born Oct. 30, 1959, in Alpena, Mich. He attended Bloomington (Minn.) Jefferson High School and went on to earn a bachelor s degree in physical education from Minnesota in 1982. While an undergraduate, he worked for his father, then-minnesota head coach Jim Dutcher. He then spent one season in the prep ranks at Apple Valley (Minn.) High School before becoming a graduate assistant at Illinois, where he earned his master s degree in physical education and athletic administration. While in Champaign, Dutcher helped Lou Henson lead the Illini to a Big Ten title, two appearances in the Sweet 16 and one regional final. Dutcher s first full-time coaching job came at South Dakota State, where he spent three seasons helping turn around the Division II program before departing in 1988 for Michigan. His final season in Ann Arbor ended with the Wolverines claiming the first-ever Big Ten Tournament championship. Justin Hutson enters his third season of his second stint at San Diego State after returning to Montezuma Mesa following a two-year stay at UNLV where he was the associate head coach. This year is his eighth overall at SDSU (2006-11, 2013-present). When Hutson returned in April of 2013, he became reunited with Fisher, Brian Dutcher, Mark Fisher, David Velasquez and Matt Soria, a group with which he spent five seasons. During their tenure, the Aztecs went to the postseason five times and averaged 25.4 wins per year, which includes six postseason victories. In 2009, SDSU advanced to the NIT semifinals and in 2011, reached the NCAA Sweet 16 en route to a 34-3 record and a No. 6/11 (AP/Coaches) final ranking. At the Mountain West level, the Aztecs won the 2010 and 2011 tournament titles and the 2011 regular-season crown. Hutson was part of a staff that set numerous school records and in the last three years of his first tenure with the Aztecs, Hutson took on the role of defensive coordinator and helped SDSU lead the Mountain West in scoring defense in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Upon his return, Hutson helped the 2013-14 team to a 31-5 record, an MW regular-season title, an appearance in the Sweet 16 and a final national ranking of No. 13/12. Last year, he coached SDSU to a 27-9 mark, another conference regular-season crown and a spot in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Defensively, the Aztecs have been one of the best in the nation, finishing second in scoring defense the last two years and posting top-10 efforts in fieldgoal percentage defense (8th in 2014, 7th in 2015). San Diego State also produced the fifth-best three-point percentage defense in 2014 and the 16th-best effort in 2015. In both of his stints, Hutson has played a pivotal part in SDSU's recruiting efforts as the team s recruiting coordinator. He was instrumental in securing a pair of nationally recognized classes, including the No. 15 class leading into 2009-10, which included 2011 NBA firstround draft pick Kawhi Leonard and four-year starter Chase Tapley. That class was also rated the top group among non-automatic qualifying BCS schools by a pair of recruiting sites. Hutson also recruited Jamaal Franklin, a two-time All-American and 2013 second-round NBA draft pick of the Memphis Grizzlies, and 2014 NBA draft pick Xavier Thames. The 2014-15 incoming class, his first of his second stint, meanwhile, was regarded as a top-15 class and this year, he helped secure a pair of four-star players. Prior to his decision to return to SDSU, Hutson helped UNLV to a pair of 25-plus-win seasons and two NCAA tournament appearances. He played a key role in helping the Rebels bring in a highly regarded recruiting class in 2012-13, which included the 2013 No. 1 overall NBA draft selection, Anthony Bennett, a player he recruited. Before arriving at SDSU in July 2006, Hutson served as an assistant coach at Cal Poly. The Mustangs went 10-19 in 2005-06, doubling their previous season's win total. He was responsible for recruiting the 2006 Big West Freshman of the Year and landing two freshmen on the Big West allfreshmen team, along with bringing two first-team all-big West selections and the defensive player of the year to San Luis Obispo in 2006-07. Prior to his stint at Cal Poly, Hutson served as the head varsity coach at Bakersfield High School where he led the Drillers to a CIF Central Section Championship and four appearances in the playoffs in four seasons. His 2004 team was ranked as high as No. 22 in the nation and fourth in California, while his 2003 squad finished the season with a 25-5 record and won the section title. Prior to entering the high school ranks, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater CSU Bakersfield for two seasons (1999-00). As a collegiate player, Hutson enjoyed a storied career, winning two NCAA Division II championships at CSU Bakersfield. In the 1993 championship season, the Roadrunners were undefeated with a 33-0 record and followed that up with a 27-6 record during the 1994 season. David Velasquez enters his 14th season at San Diego State and third as an assistant coach. Prior to his appointment as an assistant coach, he spent six seasons as the program s director of player development. Velasquez s responsibilities include recruiting, on-court coaching, skill development and academics. As an assistant, Velasquez is heavily involved in player development. In his previous role, he spent countless hours with former and current Aztecs analyzing their performance in games and in practice on video. Now, he applies those sessions on the practice floor. Velasquez also plays a huge role in the performance of Aztecs in the classroom. The Bay Area native works directly with San Diego State s academic advisors, tutors and mentors to ensure standards are met. What may go unnoticed is his relationship with players. As a former SDSU men s basketball student-athlete and recruit host, Velasquez understands all of the virtues that an Aztec basketball player possesses, which allows him to relate to the entire roster. In his first season as an assistant, Velasquez helped ink a consensus top-15 recruiting class, while helping the Aztecs enjoy one of their finest seasons ever, which culminated in 31 wins, a Mountain West regular-season title and an NCAA Sweet 16 berth. Last season, he coached SDSU to 27 wins, a second straight MW regular-season crown and an appearance in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Velasquez was also key in the Aztecs inking two four-star players who will arrive for 2015-16. As San Diego State s director of player development, Velasquez assisted the basketball coaching staff with video breakdown, film exchange, travel, community service and handled many of the day-today office duties. Prior to his current position, Velasquez was a student manager for the 2002-03 season before serving as head manager from 2003-07. In 2002-03, San Diego State earned a berth to postseason NIT, where the Aztecs picked up their first Division I postseason tournament victory en route to an appearance in the second round. Then in 2005-06, San Diego State won the Mountain West with a 13-3 league record before winning the MW tournament. As a result, the Aztecs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time under head coach Steve Fisher and won a then school-record 24 games. Fisher awarded Velasquez a scholarship in December 2006 and was added to the active roster in January 2007. As an official playing member of the team, Velasquez played in four games and recorded a steal. He was a member of a team that finished with a 22-11 record and advanced to the second round of the postseason NIT. In Velasquez s five seasons as manager, the Aztecs went to the postseason three times and won 22 or more games twice. Following his graduation from San Diego State in May 2007, Velasquez was hired at the University of the Pacific later that month. As the Tigers' graduate manager, he assisted with UOP s camps, created highlight tapes and coordinated film exchange before returning to his alma mater. Since his return, SDSU has recorded eight more 20-win seasons, including seven with at least 23 victories, and reached the postseason in each of the last eight years. More recently, Velasquez has helped the Aztecs earn an NCAA tournament berth six years in a row, win the first six NCAA tournament games in program history and reach at least the third round of the Big Dance in four of the last five seasons, including two Sweet 16 appearances.
