Game Information Memphis Redbirds Media Relations Department 200 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee 38103 Phone: 901.722.0293 www.memphisredbirds.com @memphisredbirds Memphis Redbirds (19-25) at Las Vegas 51s (24-22) Friday, May 27 9:05 p.m. (CT) Cashman Field (9,334) Las Vegas, Nevada Game #45 Road Game #21 (8-12) RHP Alex Reyes (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Duane Below (3-3, 4.32) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds eight-game west coast road trip moves to Las Vegas for a four-game series against the 51s (Triple-A Mets) running up until the Redbirds return home next week for four games Tuesday-Friday. The Redbirds got two home runs from Jonathan Rodriguez in an 8-4 win over Salt Lake Thursday, one day after David Washington knocked two out of the park in a 9-7 win, and Charlie Tilson had a Redbird season-high four hits and scored three runs while Deck McGuire worked seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits. A win Friday would be Memphis third-straight, matching a season long and setting a new mark for best road stretch this season. Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Alex Reyes makes his second start as a Redbird after fanning eight in four innings and giving up just two hits in his Memphis and season debut Sunday against Fresno. Reyes, the top prospect in the Cardinals organization and seventh-ranked in baseball, was making his first appearance at the Triple-A level. Reyes allowed baserunners in each of the first three innings, including loading the bases in the second, but he struck out the final batter of the inning each time to escape without allowing a run. The Redbirds are scheduled to match up against 51s left-hander Duane Below, who is making his eighth start of the season. Below has appeared in 43 major league games and made three starts with the Detroit Tigers and Miami Marlins, but he has not returned to the bigs since 2013. Below is holding opponents to a.256 batting average in 886.0 career minor league innings pitched. THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY: In 2007, Brian Falkenborg converted his 12th-consecutive save by pitching a scoreless inning in the Redbirds 2-0 win at Round Rock. Falkenborg converted 23-of-27 save opportunities over the course of the year. SCHEDULE WITH LAS VEGAS: Las Vegas is the fourthconsecutive Memphis opponent from the other side of the Pacific Coast League. The Redbirds swept a four-game series with the 51s last season in Memphis, including a rain-shortened 1-0 game on June 5. The 51s are currently a New York Mets affiliate and have been part of the Padres, Dodgers and Blue Jays organizations since Memphis joined the PCL in 1998. STATS AND TRENDS Memphis fell from third to 11th in the PCL in ERA after the Salt Lake series (4.36), but the Redbirds improved to 12th in batting average (.248) over the last four games The Redbirds have had 14 errors in the last 18 games, with 10 errorless contests, after having 26 errors in the first 26 games of the season Memphis has 19 home runs in 24 games in the month of May after hitting nine in 20 games in April The Redbirds have left the fewest runners on base in the PCL (281), and no other team has stranded fewer than 301 The Redbirds starting pitchers have given up 20 home runs in 24 games in the month of May after allowing eight in 20 games in April Jonathan Rodriguez is 6-for-16 (.375) with six runs, two doubles, three home runs and six RBI on the current road trip, and Charlie Tilson is 7-for-19 (.368) with four runs scored Greg Garcia is hitting.333 (14-42) in his last 11 games with five runs scored, and he is 10-for-26 (.385) with three multi-hit games on his current six-game hitting streak Patrick Wisdom has four multi-hit games in his last seven and at least one hit in two others David Washington has a hit in 16 of his 18 games as a Redbird in which he has had an official plate appearance Nick Martini has reached base in 11 of the last 12 games and 33 of the last 38 overall that he has had at least one official plate appearance Nick Martini has not been held without a hit in back-toback games in his 32 starts this season (five hitless games) Dean Anna has drawn five walks in the last seven games after having seven in his first 32 games of the season Carlos Peguero has only been kept off base entirely in three of the 17 games he has started this season Sam Tuivailala has the second-best K/9 ratio among relief pitchers in the PCL (14.8) Ryan Sherriff is fourth in the PCL among relievers in fewest baserunners allowed per nine innings (7.9), and he has the third-lowest batting average-against by relievers in the league (.159) with John Church ranking fifth (.162) After giving up five earned runs in his first five appearances of the season, Sam Tuivailala has had nine scoreless outings in his last 10 Juan Gonzalez has worked seven-straight scoreless outings since giving up three runs in an inning of work on May 3 against Omaha, and prior to that he had not given up a run in five outings Miguel Socolovich has not issued a walk in three-straight UPCOMING SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS (ALL TIMES CENTRAL) Date Time Opponent Redbirds Starter Opponent Starter Fri. outings covering 3.2 innings after walking five in his first 15.2 innings of the season THE SEASON TOP PROSPECT ALEX REYES DEBUTS: Alex Reyes, the top-ranked prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals organization and seventh-ranked in all of Major League Baseball, pitched four innings and struck out eight in his season and Triple-A debut May 22. Reyes gave up two hits and walked three in his four innings of work in his first outing following a 50-game suspension. He allowed baserunners in each of the first three innings, including loading the bases in the second, but he struck out the final batter of the inning each time to escape without allowing a run. His eight strikeouts matched Arturo Reyes for the most by a Redbird starter in a game this season. Reyes threw 85 pitches and 48 for strikes. WASHINGTON S DOZEN: David Washington had a 12-game hitting streak from May 8-21, which covered his first 14 games played at the Triple-A level. He hit.340 with four home runs during the streak (17-50), which was the second-longest active streak in the PCL at the time it ended and the longest by a Redbird this season. TOMMY PHAM OPTIONED TO MEMPHIS: Following 10 injury rehab appearances between Springfield (AA) and Memphis (left oblique), Tommy Pham was activated from the 15-Day Disabled List and optioned to Memphis on May 19. He hit.281 (9-32) with a home run, four runs and five RBI in 10 rehab games. He had one at-bat for St. Louis on Opening Day before being placed on the DL April 4. Pham ranks in the top-10 in Redbirds history in multiple offensive categories (page 19). LEFTY LITTRELL IS A REDBIRD: Left-hander Corey Littrell made his Triple-A debut with a scoreless ninth inning on May 14 against Sacramento after being transferred from Double-A Springfield earlier that day. KIEKHEFER GETS THE CALL: Left-hander Dean Kiekhefer was recalled by St. Louis on May 14 after making 11 appearances and pitching 13.1 innings with 12 hits and two runs allowed for the Redbirds to start the season. Lefties were hitting just.105 against him, and at the time of his call-up he was one of two relief pitchers in the PCL not to issue a walk. TILSON HITS IN 10-STRAIGHT: Charlie Tilson had a 10-game hitting streak from April 20-May 4, the longest by a Redbird since Greg Garcia s 10-gamer from June 1-11, 2015. The Triple-A rookie hit.333 (14-42) during the streak, which was the secondlongest active streak in the league at the time it was snapped on May 4 against Omaha. PLEASED TO BE PLUNKED: Pinch-hitter Carlos Peguero was hit by an 0-2 pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Omaha on May 4 to give the Redbirds a 7-6 win. Memphis was up 6-1 before Omaha came back to tie it. EXTRA-BASE STRETCH: Memphis had at least one extra-base hit in the first 17 games of the season, until only having five singles in the series finale against Round Rock on April 26. Only Round Rock and Sacramento had equal streaks at the time Memphis ended. SATURDAY NIGHT SELLOUT: 10,171 fans packed AutoZone Park on April 23 for the first regularseason sellout since the renovations to the ballpark leading into the 2015 season. Those renovations included a state-of-the-art videoboard, LED ribbon board displays and additional premium seating and all-inclusive options for fans, in addition to a playing field replacement. GREG GARCIA BACK IN MEMPHIS: Infielder Greg Garcia joined the Redbirds on April 19 after being optioned by St. Louis. He played eight games in St. Louis to start the season, going 6-for-10 with six runs, a double and a home run, to go along with five walks. Garcia played 94 games in Memphis in 2015 while splitting time in the big leagues, hitting.294 with 19 doubles and two triples. Garcia is Memphis all-time leader in hit-by-pitches and is in the top-10 in eight other statistical categories (page 19). WALK-OFF WINNERS: Jonathan Rodriguez ended Memphis first home stretch in fine fashion on April 14, knocking home two runs with a two-out single to right field to give the Redbirds a 4-3 win over Oklahoma City. The Redbirds trailed 3-2 with nobody on and two outs in the ninth, and the final three hitters of the game, including Rodriguez, were down in the count 0-2 before reaching base. The Redbirds followed that up the next night with another last at-bat win, using six two-out RBI and seven runs in the last four innings to come back on three separate occasions to knock off Colorado Springs, 10-9. BACK-TO-BACK BOMBS: Carlos Peguero and Jonathan Rodriguez hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning of Memphis 8-1 win over Oklahoma City on April 13, which was the first instance of back-toback homers by Redbirds since Cody Stanley and Jeremy Hazelbaker on July 10, 2015. EVERYONE CONTRIBUTES: After having six hits in a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma City on April 11, every position player in the Memphis lineup had at least one base knock in April 12 s 4-2 loss to the Dodgers. STARTING PITCHER SUCCESS: Through one turn in the rotation, Deck McGuire, J.C. Sulbaran, Jeremy Hefner, Thomas Lee and Arturo Reyes combined for a 2.51 ERA with 22 strikeouts and 11 walks in 25.1 innings of work. The quintet helped Memphis post the Pacific Coast League s fifth-best team ERA through five games (2.60). LIGHTS-OUT BULLPEN: The Memphis bullpen went 13.1 innings without allowing an earned run from the sixth inning on April 8 through one out in the seventh inning on April 11. All seven relievers who appeared during the stretch tossed at least one scoreless inning, with only Sam Tuivailala not appearing while the streak was ongoing. JEREMY HEFNER RETURNS: In his first appearance since August 6, 2014, after a second Tommy John surgery required him to miss the 2015 season, Jeremy Hefner allowed just one hit in 5.0 innings of work for his first outing of at least five innings and only one hit in his last 88 starts. JONATHAN RODRIGUEZ DEBUTS: In his Triple-A debut on April 7, Jonathan Rodriguez smashed a threerun home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Redbirds a 6-1 lead. Rodriguez played 124 games in Springfield (AA) in 2015. OFFSEASON OWNERSHIP CHANGE: This spring, principal ownership of the Memphis Redbirds changed from the St. Louis Cardinals to Peter B. Freund. Freund is President of Trinity Packaging Corporation and Trinity Baseball Holdings. Trinity Baseball Holdings also owns the Charleston River- Dogs and the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Cardinals remain a minority owner in the Redbirds. As part of the move, third-year Redbirds General Manager Craig Unger was promoted to President and General Manager. MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES FAMILIAR FACES: Fifteen players on the 25-man Opening Day roster spent time in Memphis last season, including Dean Kiekhefer, Thomas Lee, Arturo Reyes, Ryan Sherriff, Miguel Socolovich, Sam Tuivailala, Justin Wright and Heath Wyatt on the pitching staff, catcher Alberto Rosario, infielders Dean Anna, Alex Mejia, Matt Williams and Jacob Wilson, and outfielders Anthony Garcia and Nick Martini.
