The State of the Urban Nation Trends in urban thinking, urban life, transport & logistics

Copenhagenize Design Co. - The Bicycle Urbanism People Planning, infrastructure, policy, strategy, communications -

It s a trend! Back to the Future Redefining our urban spaces for the common good

7000 years The car changed our perception of what streets are for. As well as inventing traffic engineering. It happened overnight. Out of desperation. It was massive. For 7000 years, streets were the most democratic spaces in the history of homo sapiens. The car changed all that.

This change in our perception of streets is the greatest paradigm shift in the history of homo sapiens in cities. It took two decades. We re still paying the price. The Autmobile Industry wakes up. Using marketing, spin and name-calling. Inventing jaywalking, crosswalks & playgrounds.

One reason to be optimistic: The fact is that automobiles no longer have a place in the big cities of our time.

It s a trend! One reason to be optimistic: The fact is that automobiles no longer have a place in the big cities of our time. Bertrand Delanöe - Mayor of Paris 2002-2014

Change the Question from: How many cars can we move down a street? (so last century) To: How many PEOPLE can we move down a street?

It s a trend! Urbanism Questioning traffic engineering for the first time in 75 years. Focusing on cities as attractive, safe, healthy places.

7000 years of rationality and in only 60-odd years, it all went wrong.

All the campaigns for ride a bike or take the bus are a fantastic waste of money unless you do this for cars.

The Arrogance of Space - Paris Another whistleblower technique

The Arrogance of Space - Paris Another whistleblower technique

The Arrogance of Space - Paris Another whistleblower technique

The Arrogance of Space - Calgary The low-hanging fruit. Narrow car lanes

Squeezing bicycles into The Matrix. No regard for design, the human experience, logic or safety. The Arrogance of Space Despite 100 years of cycle track design... This.

Why Copenhageners cycle: 56% - quick/ convenient 19% - good exercise 6% - inexpensive 1% - save the planet A2Bism. It is all homo sapiens want. Make the bicycle the fastest way from A to B and people will do it.

It s a trend! Demotorization Be prepared for a growing change in perception about motorized vehicles.

It s a trend! Demotorization - Number of youth getting licences is dropping rapidly - Car sales are falling - Millenials have other priorities

What is happening in European Cities? How to prepare for it and adapt to it? Societal Change The effect on transport & logistics

It s a trend! Starting Small The low-hanging fruit is being harvested first

Massive rise in the number of small packages due to online shopping. the Half of all shoes in the Netherlands are bought online. Let alone everything else we buy. effect And they need to be delivered.

Ongoing focus and funding from the European Union on finding solutions for solving congestion and, specifially, logistics in cities. 2011-2014 Cyclelogistics 2014-2017 Cyclelogistics Ahead www.cyclelogistics.eu

Cargo bikes are nothing new. Served cities for at least 70 years all over the world. The primary logistic solution.

Continues in Copenhagen. 40,000 cargo bike in daily service. Mostly families, but also small goods delivery and services.

The first major project focusing on logistics solutions using cargo bikes. 2011-2014 Cyclelogistics 2014-2017 Cyclelogistics Ahead www.cyclelogistics.eu

It s a trend! It s happening. In cities all over Europe. This company started in Paris in 2007. Urban Logistics It s booming.

It s a trend! 19 cities in the Netherlands. Testing in five other EU countries. But WHY?! DHL First Movers

Replaced 33 delivery trucks with 33 cargo bikes from Danish brand Larry vs Harry. Saved 535,000. Improved delivery times. No Green Agenda. A financial move first.

It s a trend! UPS is in the process of rolling out a huge fleet of cargo bikes in Germany and even America. What happened next? The competition saw the light.

A financial move paid off in branding. Other companies are rushing to catch up. If you re NOT doing this, you are percieved negatively What happened next? The competition saw the light.

It s a trend! Large AND small companies In most European cities. Not just the big brands, but local companies, too. Supermarkets, chain stores, IKEA, MediaMarkt, etc. Cargo bike festival in Nijmegen, Netherlands each year.

Cafe Delivery City of Copenhagen Window Washer Long Beach Copenhagen

Sushi Bike Electrician Municipal Service Copenhagen Copenhagen Ferrara, Italy

Yes, but how? What is happening out there?

Dublin, Paris - Getting trucks out of the city centre. - Distribution centre and smaller vehicles in centre - Now safest EU capital. - Paris has had many small companies testing the market

Copenhagen - City of Copenhagen set up framework for distribution centre in Sydhavn area. Up to industry to use it. citylogistik-kbh.dk

A lot of people are thinking about it, imagining the possibilities

Then there are people who are doing it. Right now. Today. Barcelona. Microdistribution centre near Arc de Triomf. Vanapedal.

Then there are people who are doing it. Right now. Today. Barcelona. Microdistribution centre near Arc de Triomf.

Lamilo - Last Mile Logistics - Consolidation Centres -EU Project. Pilots in London, Paris (bikes), Nijmegen, Utrecht, Brussels lamiloproject.eu

With decommercialized rivers and harbours all over Europe, there is massive opportunity for distribution solutions that are as old as our cities. Back to the Future in Amsterdam DHL using history s oldest transport corridors

Copenhagen Harbour. Our idea to use a consolodation centre and barges up and down the harbour. Cargo bikes and small vehicles for last mile transport. Paris is looking at this solution.

Free. Open Source. Your tax money and your fellow citizens are working hard on solutions. Solutions that make financial sense. But also modern solutions for cities facing urbanization.

We are the architects. We are the designers. Designing, building and maintaining the greatetst monuments in history. Monumental Motion Remember the big picture.
