Stage 5 We are what we repeatedly do. ~Aristotle Student Name: Date: Mailing Address: Phone: Email: Pass/Resubmit: Pass/Resubmit: Pass/Resubmit: Glenn Stewart 9404 243 Road, Baldonnel, BC V0C 1C0 Phone: 250 789 3072 Fax: 250 789 3797 Email: info@thehorseranch.com Web: www.thehorseranch.com

FREESTYLE Tools: Bareback Pad, Cherokee Bridle FS1. MOUNT YOUR HORSE. Student is able to get on the horse without a struggle. Student rocks the horse first to make sure the horse is balanced. Holds rein and mane in one hand. Horse stands still allowing rider to get on. Using help or an aid is allowed: another person, a fence or putting the horse in a ditch, downhill or using a low stump. FS2. TROT A FIGURE OF 8. Horse maintains gait. No or little difference between turns and counter turns. Very little tension on Cherokee Bridle. Horse s mouth is quiet, little or no chewing, doesn t open due to pressure. Rider is focused ahead. FS3. STOP STRAIGHT AND BACK UP FOR 10 FEET. Horse slows and stops easily and smoothly. Student focus is up and straight ahead. Student lifts the Cherokee Bridle upwards for the downward transitions and back up. Horse offers a positive reflex, backing straight and without hesitation. 2

FREESTYLE FS4. CANTER FOR 60 SECONDS. Horse maintains canter, doesn t break gait. Rider asks for the correct lead and horse gives it. Rider cruises, is not continually coaxing horse or preventing him from breaking gait. Rider is in harmony with the horse, not bouncing or out of balance. Casual rein, does not take up any contact. FS5. BEND YOUR HORSE TO A STOP AND MAKE AN EMERGENCY DISMOUNT. Rider asks for bend gracefully, closing fingers with feel. Jumps off to inside of bend once horse slows down or stops. Horse does not fight the bend, bends willingly. 3

FREESTYLE (With horse saddled, using horseman s stick, leave reins on horse s neck or over saddle horn.) FS6. TROT A FIGURE 8. Student pushes horse with Horseman s Stick (one or two hands on stick optional) from the outside. Focus with eyes and belly button. Uses outside leg to push (Stick supports) Holds Horseman s Stick on the handle. Horse turns without resisting, does not break gait. FS7. CANTER ALONG AN ARENA FENCE, USE HORSEMAN S STICK TO MAKE DOWNWARD TRANSITIONS, TROT, WALK, BACK UP. Student uses phases well: phase 1 quit riding; phase 2 stretch Horseman s Stick forward to zone 1; phase 3 driving rhythm with Horseman s Stick; phase 4 tapping zone 1 and/or front of shoulders. Horse is responsive, yields from pressure. Horse backs up willingly. Student focusing ahead, using feel and not looking at the horse. 4

FREESTYLE FS8. EASE YOUR HORSE INTO A GALLOP FOR AT LEAST 30 SECONDS. Horse speeds up willingly. Student is confident and in harmony with the horse, leans forward for centre of balance. Maintains gallop without being continually coaxed. FS9. COME BACK TO THE CANTER TO PROVE YOUR HORSE IS SETTLED. Horse takes no more than phase 1 or 2 to come back to a canter. Canter is on a loose rein. FS10. DEMONSTRATE FOUR SIMPLE LEADS ON A STRAIGHT LINE. No wider than an 8 alley. Head and neck stays relaxed. Student shows good focus. Horse demonstrates good impulsion. Nose pointed in the direction of travel. FS11. SLOW DOWN TO A NINE STEP BACK UP AND DROP THE REINS ON NECK. Horse slows down without resistance. Rider s focus is ahead, not looking down. Horse stays still after reins are dropped. 5

FINESSE Tools: Snaffle Bridle, Saddle, Savvy String F1. WHILE MOUNTED, UNBRIDLE YOUR HORSE (LEAVING BRIDLE ON FENCE). Student brings horse s head to them. Horse is helpful, keeps head in lateral flexion. F2. PLACE THE SAVVY STRING AROUND YOUR HORSE S NECK; RIDE BACKWARDS AND TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT. Student uses good rein positions (direct and supporting especially). Horse backs up, turns, willingly. F3. RETURN TO YOUR BRIDLE AND PUT IT BACK ON YOUR HORSE. Student brings horse s head to them. Horse is helpful, keeps head in lateral flexion. Accepts bit willingly. Student pushes ears through while lifting headpiece. Student is considerate and coordinated with horse s ears. 6

FINESSE F4. GO FROM A CASUAL TO CONCENTRATED REIN POSITION AND OBTAIN A SOFT FEEL. Focus is straight ahead. Uses 7 steps to get to concentrated position. Elbows are bent, back erect, fingers closed that are sure and steady for the horse. Holds until soft feel is obtained, then releases. Hands above and in front of horn. F5. STARTING ON A CASUAL REIN SHOW THREE YO-YOS FROM TROT TO BACK UP STRAIGHT BACK TO TROT. Casual to concentrated reins are used each time. Graceful use of the reins smooth to watch and for the horse to feel. Horse backs up willingly, goes forward willingly. Back up using the 9 step back up technique back. Student focuses straight ahead. Straight lines. Straight from back up into trot. 7

FINESSE F6. WITH CONCENTRATED REINS, INDIRECT REINS, DIRECT AND SUPPORTING REINS MOVE THE HINDQUARTER THEN THE FOREHAND IN A CONTINUOUS FLOW. Student demonstrates correct rein positions for all three positions. Rider focuses with eyes, belly button and legs correctly. Horse can make the transition from one rein position to the next smoothly. Rider shows at least a 180 degree turn of the hindquarter and 180 degrees turn of the forehand. Both sides are equal. Horse maintains the pivoting feet inside the size of a hula hoop. F7. SHOW A FULL ROTATION ON THE HINDQUARTERS USING THE DIRECT AND SUPPORTING REIN, ONE TO THE RIGHT, ONE TO THE LEFT. Correct rein positions Rider focuses with eyes and belly button. Uses outside leg to push horse. Horse is pivoting, could maintain hind legs without a hula hoop. Both sides are equal. 8

FINESSE F8. YIELD THE HQ THROUGH 6 CONES. Soft feel. Zone 1 points out straight past the last cone. Moves forwards with confidence and understanding. Rider shows appropriate focus. HQ crosses between cones first, horse moving sideways. ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES Please video the tasks in order and avoid editing.
