R OYAL L AKE OF THE WOODS YACHT CLUB SUMMER NEWSLETTER, #58 August 12, 2013 COMMODORES NEWS Warmth Returns in August People say things in the summer they wish they could take back in winter. It s a fact, August weather at Lake of the Woods can be anything but predictable. The wet and cold weather from July waited around to welcome me back after a week in Toronto, but finally gave up and left on Saturday. Unlike the weather, the activity at Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club has been anything but unpredictable. The events this week kept the club house staff as busy as ever. Please read the notes that follow from the Rear Commodores of Tennis and Sailing which have highlight who won which of the numerous Tennis tournaments as well as the winners of this years sailing program awards. Congratulations to all those who were victorious and to all who participated in this weeks competitions. In addition to all this competition, UPCOMING EVENTS our Club has 2 sailors attending the Canadian Opti Championship at the Royal at a glance St Lawrence Yacht Club this upcoming week outside Montreal. We wish them All Week (Tuesday-Friday) the best of luck. Win or lose, our Club's competitors follow the rules of good Week 7 Tennis sportsmanship. The end of a match or the finish line of the race is not the end Children s Program/Stay N Play of the event. Our Club emphasizes good sports etiquette. This includes showing up to receive the spoils of victory, and just as important to cheer the vic- Back Deck Lunch Service, 11-3 Daily tors. Good sportsmanship is a reflection of who we are as a club and sets an example for our next generation of competitors. The Club was held a luncheon on Thursday that I did not attend, however from the comments of those that did, I wish I had. A speaker from the Fraser Institute gave a highly praised presentation on the challenges our First Nations people. The Goodwin and Senft families were responsible for organizing the event. We should try to insure these luncheons continue next year. Our Wednesday night Kids/Young Parents night, Thursday hosted dinner and Friday Royal hour were all very well attended. It is really terrific to see the members enjoying facilities at the level they are this year. The daily attendance and new membership have increased considerably this year. Both bode well for the future of the Club. Monday, August 12 Gentle Yoga, 9:30-10:30 Soccer Ages 12+, 4:30, Coney Beach Tuesday, August 13 Flow Yoga, 9:30-10:30 Women s Tennis, 10:00-Noon Teen Triple Threat, 6:00-7:00 Wednesday, August 14 Gentle Yoga, 9:30-10:30 Kids Movie Night, 6:00 Kids Ball Hockey, 13 & under, 6:00 The Club also hosted the LOTWHD Fundraiser. This year saw 135 attendees come out to support the Kenora Hospital Foundation. I attended the Annual Power Squadron event that day through the Sunset channel to Sioux Narrows and unfortunately returned too late and too exhausted to make the dinner, I fortunately have a long time friend who attended the dinner and made sure that I was the winning bidder on an item in the silent auction. Many thanks Doug Wells. The coming week will see a number of wind up events occur in the sailing calendar among others. I will be heading back to Toronto for a final time later this week. It has been an honour this year serving as Co Commodore. I hope everyone has, is and will continue to enjoy the Club's facilities On behalf of all members, I would like to say thank you to our tireless staff for doing an excellent job. We owe you all a debt of gratitude. I look forward to enjoying this week and seeing all of you again next summer. Sincerely, Jeff Banfield Co-Commodore Thursday, August 15 Flow Yoga, 9:30-10:30 Soccer Ages 5-11, 4:30, Coney Beach Club Dinner, 6:30, Host: Tori Newall Friday, August 16 Men s Tennis, 10:00-Noon Royal Hour Tennis for Kids, 6:00-7:30 Royal Hour, 6:00 BBQ Buffet, 7:30 Saturday, August 17 McLaughlin Powder Puff, Female Skippers, 2:00 Club Series Races Wind Up Sunday, August 18 Mixed Tennis, 11:00, Wind Up to Follow Adult Ball Hockey 14+, 4:00-5:00 Monday, August 19 Painting with Pippi, 9:15

Tennis The Ladies Doubles Championships held on Sunday, August 11th was won by Catherine Konantz and Alex Sawchyn won for the second year in a row in round robin play. Congratulations! This will be the last official week for this year s tennis program at RLWYC. We would like to thank the Pro Sean Bailey and his assistant Skylar Wall for the fabulous job they have done this summer. We would also like to acknowledge the help of Ben Rankin and Niels Hurst as assistants. Thank you. The tennis program has had a major boost; first the new courts, followed by extremely competent and professional tennis staff and all of the members who came out to enjoy the program and the courts. Elly Hoogterp-Hurst Rear Co-Commodore, Tennis Sheila Norrie Rear Co-Commodore, Tennis Angie Ferguson Tournament The 13th Annual Angie Ferguson Tennis Tournament was held under bright sunny skies on Saturday August 10th. Although the morning was cool, the tennis was HOT! as twelve juniors with their adult partners took to the courts. Congratulations to all our Junior players who displayed excellent tennis skills and good sportsmanship, and thank you to all their supporters who came out to watch and enjoy the morning. The winners were: 1st. - Katarina Vergotis with partner Lorne Hurst 2nd - Sam Peterson with partner Linda Stewart 3rd - Amelia Fauth with partner Andrea Rivalin 4th - James Edgell with partner Phil Edgell Last year's winner, Niels Hurst, presented the coveted candy filled trophy to Katarina. Congratulations Katarina! A special thank-you to our Tennis pros - Sean and Skylar - for running the tournament on time and so efficiently! And of course, thanks to Chef Dan and his staff for providing a delicious BBQ lunch for all. We look forward to seeing you all back next year for this fun event.
